Speaking at Comic-Con, David Benioff explained that Storm of Swords is simply too long to cover in one season:

"If we're lucky enough, if we have a season three, that's when it will start not corresponding so neatly to the books because Storm of Swords is too big to do as one season," he said.

"Our hope has always been that we can keep this alive somehow. There's a certain scene - I'm not even going to say the name of the scene because the name itself is a spoiler... Let's call it 'RW'. We've always felt that if we can get to 'RW', then we've accomplished something."

Author George R.R. Martin added:

"When they film it and show it, I'm going to try to arrange to be out of the country during that period and some place that doesn't actually have television yet."

Gettign back to Season Two, Benioff stated:

"We have a bunch of great new characters coming in," he said. "We've already got such an incredible cast, but it's time to meet the Red Priestess.

"It's time to see those dragons and wolves start to grow up. There's bad stuff lurking north of the wall. It's a season of exploration."

UPDATE:Oliver Ford Davies, best known for playing Naboo politician Sio Bibble in The Phantom Menace, has reportedly been cast as Maester Cressen.MTV

I'm always worried when some exec is super excited about saying things are going to deviate. However, given that this is HBO and not some other network I'm willing to tentatively say okay. However, short leashes are in order if you ask me.

It'll probably be wise for Benioff to step off the grid if/when the "RW" is aired. People unfamiliar with the books were pretty incensed when Ned was killed... so, they'll probably go totally batshit after they see what unfolds at the RW...

*SPOILERISH* Who cares what people watching the series think? Probably them. I don't though. Ned's death is necessary and so is the RW. I think Benioff was saying the RW was something they wanted to do though.

It scares me they're going to deviate, but hopefully that just means they'll make things more concise, cut out stuff instead of inventing their own storyline.

Although the chances of this making it all the way to the point where Daeny invades Westeros is pretty slim.

I totally agree with you level1

My thing is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" If they need to split book 3 into 2 seasons, then by all means do it. "RW" will be EPIC!!!!!!!!!

If truly there is a need to change things then cut some unnecessary stuff. But the problem with that is that the fun is in the details. That's what keeps it interesting!

I agree, there is no reason to screw up story, split it up, nobody is going to go ape shit if they don't have all of SoS in one season lol the more the better!

Can someone enlighten me as to what this "RW" is? I just watched season 1 and haven't read the books yet.

@Barney--Suit up!! and jump into the books, stay off of the wikis and you'll know what the RW is in no time. Let's just say if you read it, and when they air it, it will blow your mind.
