WATCHMEN Creator Alan Moore Believes "Infantile" Interest In Superheroes Could Be A Precursor To Fascism

Former comic book writer Alan Moore has once again taken aim at the genre he made a name for himself in, sharing his concerns about adults lining up to watch a new Batman movie. Read on for details...

Alan Moore has become increasingly outspoken in recent years, particularly when it comes to the comic books he made a name for himself writing. The concept of adults reading those perplexes the iconic writer, and he reiterated during an interview with The Guardian that, "I'm definitely done with comics."

The Watchmen, Batman: The Killing Joke, and Captain Britain scribe would add, "I haven’t written one for getting on for five years. I will always love and adore the comics medium but the comics industry and all of the stuff attached to it just became unbearable."

While Moore still loves the comics medium, he's not so sure when it comes to the adults who read them. In particular, he's unable to fathom why anyone would have a fascination with superheroes

"Hundreds of thousands of adults [are] lining up to see characters and situations that had been created to entertain the 12-year-old boys – and it was always boys – of 50 years ago," he tells the site. "I didn’t really think that superheroes were adult fare. I think that this was a misunderstanding born of what happened in the 1980s – to which I must put my hand up to a considerable share of the blame, though it was not intentional – when things like Watchmen were first appearing."

"There were an awful lot of headlines saying ‘Comics Have Grown Up’. I tend to think that, no, comics hadn’t grown up. There were a few titles that were more adult than people were used to," Moore adds. "But the majority of comics titles were pretty much the same as they’d ever been. It wasn’t comics growing up. I think it was more comics meeting the emotional age of the audience coming the other way."

Not only does he believe that's infantile, but also dangerous.

"I said round about 2011 that I thought that it had serious and worrying implications for the future if millions of adults were queueing up to see Batman movies," the prolific writer says. "Because that kind of infantilisation – that urge towards simpler times, simpler realities – that can very often be a precursor to fascism."

We'd argue that assessment is a little over the top, but there's a very clear generational divide here. After all, it's commonplace for millennials to relive their childhoods, whether it's through reading comic books or building LEGO sets.

I know I am likely going to catch some shit for this, but here it is: he’s describing religion.

@ScaryTerry - Honestly not a bad take I think. A lot of people are going to refute this in the comments, but a lot of people also know EXACTLY the worst type of fans here.

I mean, if you take it as "it's becoming a religion", you've already seen it happen with Star Wars, Star Trek, and Harry Potter. Futurama does a great joke on that with Star Trek.

I think the other angle is that he fears too many adults are engaging in escapism/fantasy. The lead to facism is due to people rather spending their time being dulled by what's on their screens rather than what's actually happening in their reality.

Either way, extreme way of saying it, but when you've had to deal with the worst type of adult fans for DECADES misunderstanding your work, I can see how it would negatively affect your world view.

@KelvTwelve - I can see it.
Also, when you're rigidly attached to something, it often means becoming unaccepting of anything else.

Jesus, Wilding. Show me proof of anyone who is "unwilling to accept that She-Hulk: Attorney at Law features a female lead".

@GreedoSarducci - He won't cause he can't. Accusations are easier to make then showing proof even though the accusation includes that there are large amounts of people. Should be easy to call out the individuals that do this if it's so widespread....

@NateBest, there you go again... "news" with lines and lines of personal opinions.

Why he can't just write an opinion essay about his views on the matter is beyond me.

@Fogs - Precisely, they write articles with personal opinions they know will trigger some people and then later complain about the comment section being toxic. They don't help themselves.

@GreedoSarducci - I don't think She-Hulk being a female lead is the problem,it's how it's written and directed, how it makes out all men are bastards, some are but not all.

@marvel72 - I think it's more to emphasize the ones that are bastards.
But we see clearly things like Holloway being fairly respectful and indifferent which isn't treated as a problem, Matt's attitude and personality shining through as an example of a man who does have attractive qualities (hell, I'd want to [frick] him too) and the potential redemption of multiple male characters who also seem to form a genuine supportiveness which was heartwarming alongside others.
Heck, even the guy who bones She Hulk but not Jen isn't treated as some major douche; just an unfortunate case of being attracted to only one side of Jen (pretty relatable for a lot of people).
I think the show tried to ground with a lot of issues that may at times be more prevalent to women and that just doesn't click with male audiences as much who may have certain other expectations (God knows what ).
I'm not going to cry misogyny in all of it, but there's definitely a lot I've seen on social media that the show actually reflects pretty well so far.

Also, worth noting that we have also had [foo foo]y female characters too like Titania and that light elf who catfished Dennis. Played for comedy, but all the same it's clear she wasn't written as someone we were cheering for.

@GreedoSarducci - there have been people bitching about She-Hulk is replacing Hulk since she was announced to have her own show. Why do you think MSheU term was made?
Radders
Radders - 10/10/2022, 10:16 AM
@TheSuperMex - Because Kevin Feige said he wanted more female superheroes in the MCU than male?
TheSuperMex
TheSuperMex - 10/10/2022, 10:34 AM
@Radders - so? What’s wrong with that? Black Widow was the only female superhero until Captain Marvel and Wasp showed up. Most heroes are still male.
