What AGENT CARTER Tells Us About The MCU & Future Appearances Of Certain Characters

The Marvel one shot Agent Carter may be telling us more than we initially thought about the ever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spoilers follow.

'Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter' is the latest short film, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Set sometime after the events of 'Captain America: The First Avenger' and after the end of World War II (the post-credit scene appearance of a bikini would suggest mid-1946 at least), it follows Agent Peggy Carter, a member of the Strategic Scientific Reserve (or S.S.R) who tackles the mysterious 'Zodiac'.

Zodiac is a criminal organisation who are in the possession of a vial of some sort of liquid. This is probably just a MacGuffin, but logically it could have something to do with an attempt to replicate the Super Soldier Serum. There's even a thin chance that the vial was in fact the Infinity Formula, should Marvel decide to introduce that concept to the movies....

Howard Stark features (and in the background we see what is presumably the original human butler Jarvis). Timothy 'Dum Dum' Dugan (last seen in 'Captain America') features and the name 'Phillips' is mentioned by Stark - this most likely refers to Colonel Chester Phillips (played by Tommy Lee Jones in 'Captain America')

Director Louis D’Esposito says “What we’ve discussed is that there are going to be more Peggy Carter stories that we need to tell. She is wildly popular. Hayley loves it, and we love it. What we’ll do and how we’ll do it has not been determined yet, but those discussions have started. It’s in our consciousness that we need to tell another Peggy Carter story, somehow. Yet to be figured out yet, though.”

I think that since Howard Stark requests Peggy to run S.H.I.E.L.D with him, and it seems 'Dum Dum' Dugan and Colonel Phillips are still involved, it is conceivable that any or all of these characters could reappear any time that S.H.I.E.L.D is shown from mid-40's onward e.g. a flashback in the 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' TV show, or if Ant-Man retains its rumoured 1960's setting, or if they ever made a Nick Fury origin movie etc.

Also, since Nick Fury states that he knew Howard he could also appear in any flashback scenes (a 20-something year old Nick Fury from roughly the late 1960's/early 1970's) even if they never make his solo origin film.

If Marvel decide to really embrace the idea they could do a retro SH.I.E.L.D movie with perhaps Howard Stark, Mrs Stark, original Jarvis, Dum Dum, Chester Phillips, Peggy Carter – and depending what decade they set it in (a Cold War film?) even Nick Fury and or Hank Pym...

Yeah, I'm not getting your point. Peggy was a great character. Coulson was just shoehorned in whereas Peggy mattered.

Anyways, I hope Peggy's short films dsvelop to the extent of becoming a S.H.I.E.L.D. origin series.

If those are the reasons she is stupid, then most characters in most movies are just as stupid. Cops do tons of property damage and shoot multiple criminals, but are never docked pay, fired, or even have to fill out any paper work, etc.

@nibs She is the love interest but I can't think of any point in 'Captain America' where Peggy is shown to be bumbling (Move or act in an awkward or confused manner/Speak in a confused or indistinct way) or a bimbo (attractive but unintelligent female); in fact the film makers go out of their way to show she is neither of these things. In 'Agent Carter' she is again shown to be courageous and competent.

I'd agree that she can be very reckless though (as shown by 'testing the shield' in CA:TFA and by her solo mission in 'Agent Carter'...

@fangz Invaders would be interesting but I can't see it happening, mainly as I think the rights to Namor are with Universal?

They left CA:TFA loose enough that they can show some more WW2 stuff - I expect some flashbacks in 'The Winter Soldier'. A Howling Commandos One-Shot might be fun if they aren't in the flashbacks.

I assume the next period they explore would be the 1960's...

May I suggest you devote more time to banging chicks then? If an activity gives you around 90% disappointment, it's really time to find another outlet. I'd agree that an overwhelming amount of movies aren't worth the time, but these days I'm lucky to watch one a month. So I always make sure that one is going to be a guaranteed hit for me. So I'd say maybe 5% of the movies I end up watching aren't as good as I'd hoped.

She is reckless, and you may not like her, but never is the character "a bumbling bimbo".

(It's amusing you can't cope with a high ranking female but have no trouble accepting a Cosmic Cube and Super Soldier...)

also, to address the actual article for once, I think that all sounds completely awesome. If the speculation was stripped from the article, and it was simply a plot summary of a show or short to come, I'd be ecstatic. Perhaps even more than I am about the actual SHIELD show, which I'm kinda lukewarm about right now.

@ruadh Thanks. All the other One-Shots have had a purpose (set up Thor, tie in The Incredible Hulk, show SHIELD are reverse-engineering alien tech) so there must be a reason to suddenly jump back to the 1940's instead of setting up Thor2/Cap2/GotG...

I have to say I'm really looking forward to Agents of SHIELD - has a lot of potential.

@nibs Batman Begins & Iron Man are two of may favourite comicbook movies (the other is X-Men: First Class). Man of Steel had issues but is still the best Superman film yet.

Obviously some are better than others but there isn't yet an MCU film I've disliked.

If CA:TFA was in the late 30s, early 40s, there wouldn't have been any women in the military, especially one that ranked so high

(CA:TFA starts in March 1942 and continues to at least 1943. After that it's unclear how much time the 'base destruction' montage takes place over)

That was 'research' at the beginning of said movie. So yes there were Women of said rank.
As to looks well hollywood/comics has always taken atistic liscense; that Daniel Boone, Leoplold et al. Peggy in the comics was 'smoking hot.' So that stayed true.

I think it's time for you to consider another joint. It's really not that big of a deal. Sometimes you meet someone, you get a little interested, and then they show interest in someone else, and it's a bite in the ass. It happens. In movies, they exaggerate things. It's not much of a secret that First Avenger was going for something of an Indiana Jones tone, and that kinda thing fit right in. She was tough, and not just simply a damsel, and yeah she overreacts. But for some people, that was funny.

@nibs wait you gave Man of steel 8 and green lantern 7 then gave Captain America 3. this means absolutely nothing to you but you lost any and all credibility. i mean MOS had bad filmography, destroyed supes character, several inconsistencies in the story and in the power source for kryptonians. it was utter garbage. so what is supes gonna take responsibility for the thousands of people he killed and the damage he did. and green lantern was crap in aspects of the film. aside from toma-re he was cool.
