Charlie Cox Says DAREDEVIL Is "Much Darker Than Anything I've Ever Seen Marvel Do Before"

While speaking to reporters at the Theory of Everything premiere in New York last night, the actor who'll bring the Man Without Fear to Netflix spoke about Marvel's dark vision for the show, as well as Matt Murdock's addiction to fighting crime.

Last week at NYCC, we all got our first glimpse at former Boardwalk Empire alum Charlie Cox as both Matt Murdock, and suited up as his superhero alter ego, Daredevil. We haven't actually heard that much from the actor in regards to taking on the role, but he shared a few details with reporters at the Theory of Everything premiere last night. Cox says that "it's great fun, but it also comes with a great deal of responsibility," and suggests that although he had fun at the event, he wasn't quite prepared for how much the character means to the passionate fans in attendance at NYCC last week. He also spoke a little about his preparation for the role, and that he believes Daredevil will be very different from anything we've seen from Marvel thus far.

"I've read comics after comics after comics — I've never read so many comics in my life, and we're finding moments from the comics to reference in the show. We're trying to make a show that's new and much, much darker than anything I've ever seen Marvel do before."

Of course we know the most famous incarnations of Daredevil always depict the blind vigilante as a pretty gritty character, and it seems the Netflix show won't be shying away from that. "The concept that he can't stop," Cox explained when pressed to expand on what will make this dark take different from other Marvel projects. "He's going out and he's taking the law into his own hands, and he doesn't know if he can stop. He might be addicted to it." Are you pleased that they'll be sticking close to the character's roots? Or were you hoping for the slightly lighter tone of Mark Waid's recent run for example? Sound off below.

Absolutely perfect! This sounds like if Zack Snyder did Daredevil with all those amazing comic shots and visuals -but on TV! Why can't this show come on now?

Favreau didn't try to copy The Dark Knight, he was inspired by Batman Begins.

Anyway, I'm excited to see Marvel Studios do something darker. Especially with the creative team behind this and the great cast

@DeusExSponge,

To be fair, more directors should be inspired by Batman Begins, it's a great origin movie, maybe the best. Iron Man it's up there too.
