DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Star Charlie Cox Also Isn't Sure If The Netflix Series Is Considered MCU Canon

Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin are now part of the MCU, but is their shared history also being carried over from Netflix? The Daredevil actor isn't sure, but has some thoughts.

Daredevil ran for three seasons on Netflix, and while it wasn't perfect, it garnered enough fans to create the #SaveDaredevil movement. That, without a doubt, played a role in bringing the Man Without Fear into the MCU, but is it the same Matt Murdock from the Marvel Television series?

Maybe.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Charlie Cox reflected on his She-Hulk: Attorney at Law experience and said "I honestly don't know" when asked if the Netflix show - which Marvel Studios was not involved in creatively - is canon.

"I haven’t really gotten to that point with the writers of our next Daredevil show. So I haven’t read any scripts yet, and we haven’t really talked at length about what this current iteration will be like," the actor continues. "Just by the fact that they’re using me as an actor to play the part, it’s clear that there are going to be some consistencies and there are also going to be some differences. What they are and how we integrate the two is going to be the challenge of the new show."

"These things are really complicated, and obviously, opinions are always divided," Cox adds. "What people like is always varied, but we have an opportunity to at least take what worked really well and then also add some cool elements, ideas, concepts and themes that we weren’t able to do before. So it’s Daredevil, but upgraded."

The Daredevil: Born Again star would go on to suggest the new series can just pick and choose what it wants from the previous series, and that does make the most sense. There's no way Marvel Studios will be beholden to Marvel Television's creative decisions, something that was evident from the Darkhold's role in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

That previously appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Runaways, but the events of those shows were never referenced or even vaguely alluded to.

In Daredevil's case, we're guessing his next show will serve as a fresh start, with a mixture of new and returning actors and stories that are both fresh but somewhat build on the hero's small screen past.

Do you think the entirety of Daredevil should be considered MCU canon?

The great thing is they can pick and choose what they want to keep and say it's multiverse/vartiant stuff. Just don't make it overly comedic.. I'm ok with a lighter touch and all, but we don't need anymore walk of shame schtick. Keep that in She-Hulk

@UniqNo - It would also mean the Kingpin we saw at the end of S3 leads into Hawkeye and Echo which is a stretch.

@UniqNo - I don't mind light-heartedness at the start. DD has to have some semblance of good in his life that can slowly but surely be taken away from him piece by piece as the trajectory of his story inevitably leads into a Born Again adaptation.

@UniqNo - Not really a stretch. He acts the same, but years have passed and he's gotten stronger.

@UniqNo - A man would never take a walk of shame. Also, men don’t carry their shoes if they are walking home after sleeping at a woman’s house. Women do that because high heels. So silly.

@HOTSHOT - True, i also suppose the snap can play into it really well aswell in changing up circumstances for some characters.

Well, if he's not sure, then I'm not sure. Are you?

Is She Hulk even canon with that ending? Did any of that show matter?

Joshing Wild never misses an opportunity to decanonize Agents of SHIELD. Do you think he's ever tried the Runes of Kof-Kol to make everyone forget it ever existed? Does he lie awake at night panicked that Coulson and/or Quake are going to cameo in Secret Invasion?

@seakhan - we should all strive to enjoy something in life as much as Josh enjoys the possibility of Marvel TV not being canon.

It's really pointless at this point to keep having this debate. Even the people who are close to the production are not sure, and sometimes they even give conflicting statements. I say we just wait for the series to release and then figure it out.

At this point, those that are saying it isn't canon on this website are those that don't want it to be. Charlie has clearly and honestly said he doesn't know, and any comments he makes about the topic are an opinion based on this level of not knowing. People on hear misconstrue and misunderstand that as "see, Charlie said so!"

@HeavyMetal4Life - well said buddy. i loved the Netflix show, but i also really enjoyed him in She-Hulk, so at this point, idc, i just want the show to be good, and i have faith it will be.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Word. I have a strong feeling that the intent for all Marvel Television productions is to be canon but the dissolution of that division has caused some legal problems.

As a result, even the producers maybe uncertain.

Honestly, I consider them canon until they're stated otherwise or directly contradicted.

We’ll have to wait and see. I’m of the opinion that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Daredevil was already designed on Netflix to be in the MCU. Nothing in it contradicts the MCU. Why throw away all that great character development and story.
