Drew Goddard And Marvel Originally Conceived Netflix's DAREDEVIL As A Movie

When it was revealed that Daredevil was among the characters Marvel had decided to bring to Netflix, many fans wondered why he wasn't getting the big screen treatment. Well, Drew Goddard sheds some light on that here, and the reason may just surprise you...

There's no denying the fact that Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil was amazing, but why would Kevin Feige pass on the opportunity to bring the character to the big screen as part of Phase 3? Ultimately, it sounds like it boiled down to the fact that Marvel didn't feel like The Man Without Fear needed the big screen treatment, and you have to agree that their money was far better spent on thirteen episodes of TV than one big budget blockbuster! "I went into Marvel and talked to them about making it as a movie a couple of years ago, long after the Affleck movie," Drew Goddard explained in a recent interview with IGN to promote The Martian. "But what we all sort of realised is that, this movie doesn’t want to cost $200 million. The thing about Matt Murdock is, he’s not saving the world. He’s just keeping his corner clean. So it would feel wrong to have spaceships crashing in the middle of the city. But because of that, Marvel on the movie side is not in the business of making $25 million movies. They’re going big, as they should."

As for why the decision was then made for Daredevil to be moved to the small screen, he continued: "It felt that we’d have more freedom to make it on the small screen and make it more adult. Look, if we took the Netflix [show] and put it in theatres, it’s rated R. And they’re not doing R-rated movies. And we also got to really explore the character. I feel like Netflix was the best possible home for that, otherwise you’d end up with a watered down version." Goddard is spot on there, and as Daredevil has been hailed as one of Marvel's best adaptations to date, the right decision was made for this character, even if it's hard to escape the feeling that he deserves to appear on the big screen (fingers crossed for Avengers: Infinity War, eh?). What do you think?

Hey, I'll take 13 hours of daredevil over 2 1/2 any day. Netflix was a much better fit

Remember before the show released everyone was saying Marvel were mistreating the character/having him take a backseat to the c-listers on the big screen, and how he deserved a movie more (maybe he did).

Then afterwards Whedon comments on initially wanting a movie and everyone wants to kill him.

If they took Daredevil as is and turned it into a movie, it would be hands down the best Marvel film. Superb characters, development, story and action (except that final fight). This is the sort of willingness to go where the story takes you that I think was lacking in Age of Ultron. Real consequences and tragedies.

It's funny how people say DD was great because Netflix was in charge, when in fact, the show was entirely produced by Marvel TV\Jeph Loeb and filmed by ABC Studios.

I'm hoping Drew has a great relationship with Marvel because I can't stress this enough, he is a perfect fit for Marvel and I would love to see him write and direct at least one Marvel movie.

Doesn't matter if it's a movie or TV show, it still ends up with a whooping 200 million budget!

But I'm glad that it didn't turn into a movie. Although I wish Netflix and Marvel would release the Blu-Ray for Daredevil.

So it was impossible for them to make a movie because they couldn't do an R-rating but they were able to make a show that was TV-MA, the equivalent to an R-Rating. I don't get it.

This the best thing the MCU has ever put out and is better than most CBMs anyway. Glad they went this direction. Plus we get multiple hours of entertainment rather than 2.

I love the Netflix series but DD deserves a movie at some point. Plus they might come across a story arc that would be best suited as a movie(Born Again)

@Dandy

To be fair, I don't think Teen Titans Go! particularly has adults in mind when making their show.

Season 2 can't come soon enough. So I personally am happy they went this way instead and I believe a lot of other people are too.

I was one of the biggest defenders of the Affleck Daredevil, you might even remember my article defending it made front page.

And while i still enjoy that movie, I can't deny, Marvel did it better, Can't wait for season 2. Netflix was the way to go. Affleck may have been a good Matt Murdock/Daredevil But Cox [frick]ing killed it.

Dandy - Huh, swear I read somewhere that its budget was around the 200 million mark. My bad, probably should have looked for more sources.

I prefer the TV series angle for certain characters as long as they eventually tie in to the larger universe.

DareDevil does not need his own movie.

I think Moon Knight is the next character that needs his own Series. Followed by Blade and maybe someone different like Arcade or Mojo in a truman show reality type environment.

I still wish Joe Carnahan got to make his Daredevil movie. We'll never see the Daredevil I love as long as he's on the small screen.

the only thing I like more in the 2003 Daredevil movie is the costume, other than that the Netflix show, is 10000000X better than that !

I absolutely loved the first season, and cannot wait for the second, but I'd still like to see Matt in a movie down the line. Was really hoping for Civil War, but since that's out of the question, I'm REALLY hoping for Infinity War...
