JOHN WICK Director Chad Stahelski Shoots Down Possibility Of Helming DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN For Marvel Studios

After recently revealing that he tried to convince Marvel Studios to let him direct Blade, John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski explains why big MCU and Star Wars projects aren't a draw to him as a filmmaker.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski recently spoke about pitching Marvel Studios on the possibility of him taking the helm of Blade. They turned him down, but if not the Daywalker, what about the Man Without Fear?

ComicBook.com (via ActioNewz.com) asked the filmmaker if he would be interested in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series, and he explained why he no longer desires to take the helm of a massive superhero (or Star Wars) movie. "As far as Daredevil goes, it's the same thing," he said of the constrictions of well-known IPs.

"It's like, I've just been let off the leash literally for nine years, doing whatever I want. And if I want John Wick to go to f***ing space in [John Wick: Chapter 5], he'll go to f***ing space."

"The fans want us to make something that fits in what they've kind of seen before. So it's slightly nostalgic and kind of what they want, but subverted enough to be different and fresh. Like, keep saying that. You want the same, but different," Stahelski continued. "How do you keep doing that with 50 Star Wars properties? You're going to mess up. You're going to tread."

"I'm not defending either side," the filmmaker added, "it's just a tricky line when you're dealing with existing IP, especially something as massive as a 75-year-old superhero comic book, or a 40-year-old Star Wars fan base."

Stahelski's John Wick co-director David Leitch went on to helm Deadpool 2, and even took a crack at the Fast & Furious franchise with Hobbs & Shaw. However, his old partner's opinions do make sense, especially when there's a greater level of freedom with an original property like John Wick.

If he does want to take that character into outer space, he can, whereas there will always be certain restrictions with franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars

John Wick: Chapter 4 is set to be released in theaters on March 24, 2024, while Daredevil: Born Again is expected to arrive on Disney+ in Spring 2024.

As long as he's not goofy, quipping every 5 minutes, and surrounded by fully CG backgrounds, I am so hyped for this. If they could make it rated R just this time that'll be awesome.

Off-topic: Giancarlo Esposito confirms he has met with Marvel Studios. He also has seen the rumors of him as Doctor Doom, Magneto, and Doctor Freeze? but he wants to play Professor X.

I'm ok with that. Wouldn't want to limit him to a TV show. Even if it's daredevil.

Besides, they gotta bring the full crew from the Netflix series to work on this.

Just get back the stunt and choreography team from the Netflix show

Chris Brewster and company. Shouldn’t be hard as he’s doubled for Cap and been a lead choreographer for TWS

Makes sense. We need creative people who are willing to take the burden and risk of creating new things and expressing their own concepts on a hollywood budget, I'll be interested to see what he does once he's done with John Wick.

@AmazingFILMporg - violent characters that need violent movies or shows.

Blade
Deadpool
The Punisher

All three need to be R-Rated at least.

@marvel72 - I think it was more due to Marvel going through this weird phase of needing to match the directors apparent ethnicity/race to the character's.

And yes, characters who murder people or monsters need a movie that doesnt hold back.

Honestly why not just bring back the Netflix team and they can just do the season 4 story they had planned out??!! They did the same thing for Deadpool 3, why not this??

Also, I 100% agree with the comments he made here, comic book adaptations are pretty hard to get right because you need to put certain iconic characters and storylines in there but change them enough to the point where people don't know what's going to happen. It can be a very hard balance to strike.

This guy’s delusional thinking he could put John Wick wherever he wants and everyone would watch. He’s lucky he was able to find an actor to pull off everything Keanu does because I would not watch his stunt buddies doing all the action. Daredevil doesn’t need a stunt man for a director.

I think it’d be cooler to have him direct Blade or the Punisher.

Sorry, this is 18 episode. It needs a writer/showrunner and not a director. I can understand for a 6 episode series, but 18 episodes is a lot for a director to handle unless that director is also heading up the writing much like a James Gunn in Peacemaker. Stahelski doesn't strike me as that type of director/writer, in fact he has no writing credits to speak of.
