Mark Julian Reviews: DAREDEVIL Episode 01 "Into The Ring"

Daredevil season 1, episode 01 - 'Into the Ring' is the best superhero TV pilot of all-time." If this is what a Marvel and Netflix collaboration produces, sign me up for the entire Defenders series.

One episode in and I'm already sold.  Daredevil episode 01 - 'Into the Ring' is the best superhero TV pilot of all-time.  As a fan of Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Agents of SHIELD and Constantine, each of those shows had serviceable pilots but none are as well-rounded as the first episode of our first Marvel-Netflix collaboration.  The show excels on all fronts - casting, fight choreography, lighting, editing and VFX.  While the show has yet to play all its cards, Daredevil has a maturity and sense of purpose that no other ongoing superhero drama possesses.

Praise for Daredevil has to being with the stellar cast.  While not initially sold on Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) as Matt Murdock he has a charm and charisma reminiscent of the Murdock from the recent Daredevil comic book run from Mark Waid and Chris Samnee.  Likewise, Elden Henson (The Mighty Ducks, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay) is Foggy Nelson come to life.  Deborah Ann Woll appears to have recaptured the titillating screen presence she had when she burst on the scene in True Blood. All Woll needs is the right breakthrough role and she'll be a household name.  Perhaps Daredevil will give her that push?  Much of the screen time in the pilot is devoted to these three but the other supporting characters introduced - Toby Leonard More as Wesley, Peter Shinkoda as Nobu and Wai Ching Ho's Madame Gao all made memorable first-impressions.

Daredevil Netflix

In many ways, this depiction of Matt Murdock is just like his father, Battlin' Jack Murdock, a boxer with a 24-31 record who was known for being able to take a punch.  But he was known for being tenacious and never surrendering.  He frequently got knocked down but he always got back up.  This Daredevil is not (at least not yet) the superhero from the pages of Marvel.  While he can subdue normal run-of-the-mill thugs easily, his limits are tested by a single trained professional with martial arts skills.  While he wins the fight, Murdock definitely does not walk away unscathed.  As we progress through the series, it will be interesting to see how the Hell's Kitchen lawyer upgrades his costumed persona.

While his fighting skills may not have peaked yet, the Netflix drama does immediately focus on one of Daredevil's more unique assets.  One of Daredevil’s greatest powers is his ability to tell when people are lying to him by listening to their heartbeat.  The show subtly displays this ability by simply overlaying a heartbeat whenever Murdock is keenly listening to someone speak.  Rather than over-sensationalize Daredevil's radar sense, things simply become louder whenever Matt is focusing.  Where the 2003 Daredevil movie made this ability superhuman, the Netflix series depicts Matt's "super-hearing" as merely giving him a slight advantage over his opponents.

If we were to rank cable networks in terms of the best dramas the list arguably goes -
1.) HBO
2.)AMC
3.)FX.
If not on Netflix, Daredevil has an execution and aesthetic that would be right at home on HBO.  As we progress through the 13-episode journey of Matt Murdock's transition from costumed vigilante to bona fide superhero, the pilot episode perfectly captures the spirit of a street-level Marvel Cinematic Universe with a touch more sinister and grit.  This is a series not to be missed!

After watching the final episode, I must say that the red suit looks so much better in motion than it does in pictures. This series was everything to me.

@Sillypig123 Just wait until the fight sequence in the end of episode 2. It's up there with the hallway scene on Oldboy, and for me even better.

Sounds great! Good review!! I'm really looking forward to not sleeping tonight and watching every episode as soon as I get home from work. HBO level production sounds about right, as it appeared that way in the trailers.

The hardest thing will be to stay off this site and spoilers for a couple more hours... Ugh

One thing I like in particular is how you can see Daredevil getting more and more exhausted as the fight progresses.

The pilot is not only the best superhero pilot, it's one of the best I've ever seen. In terms of photography, ambiance ect, I was amazed like weeks ago with the pilot of Better Call Saul. Netflix is going strong with its original shows though!

I'm fine with his costume as is. With that said, I believe that it won't be the final version he wears. Second season should see him donning the DD chest embroidery. I won't spoil what is said in the final episode that leads me to believe this.

Agreed on all counts. My weekend shall be utterly devoted to this show...

I have seen the pilot and there aren't any sour notes to speak of. A more auspicious start would be impossible to imagine.

I have something to say about the fight scenes.... The fight scenes have a very strong sense of realism. Far more so than any CBM or show I can think of because the truth is that comic book fighting where the good guy chronically comes out unscathed is just pure hooey. That's just how it is. In reality (not comics) all fighters take some punishment along the way. The best of the best.. the best in the world, the best there ever was, no matter who they are take hits and get hurt when it comes down to the chaos, unpredictability, and nerve wracking speed of street brawling. That's the whole truth.

So I am sure that Matt will get better, but even then you can't expect the guy not to take a beating every now and then. I would expect him to get shot, stabbed, and even lose some fights for them to maintain this level of realism. Especially against multiple attackers.

Sounds awesome. So glad he doesn't get the red suit until the season finale. Exactly how it should be. Makes it more special that way at least for me. I prefer the build to those kind of moments rather than wasting it in the first few episodes. This just builds more excitement for a season 2.

I love The Flash and Constantine, both shows are awesome. I hated AOS at first but gave it another chance after my Brother told me it got better and am glad I did because I now love it.
Gotham is okay and Harvey is the most interesting character in the show.
I have given Arrow three chances but I hate that show, although I know that a lot of other people like it.
Looking forward to watching this show, lets hope it lives up to its promise from the trailer.

Not a fan of the suit, but the show is superb. I had my doubts but they pulled it off.
