The Daredevil series has been met with high praise from fans and critics alike, and rightfully so, it's a damned good watch. Now, with all thirteen episodes having been released and everyone who wanted to watch it having watched it, showrunner Steven DeKnight has sat down with IGN to talk in-depth about the series, its characters, the Easter eggs and above all, possibilities for the future. Beware, as there are SPOILERS throughout.
On the reference to 'the Greek girl':
"I wanted to nod to that college Elektra... y'know maybe one day if the series gets picked up and we get to do more, we'll eventually get to Elektra. Speaking of Elektra, a lot of fans ask, 'why didn't you do Elektra/Bullseye?' and it just, it just didn't feel right coming out of the gate."
On that hallway fight scene:
"Since Matt Murdock is very human and we always wanted to stress that he had his heightened senses but otherwise he's this guy that pushes himself to the limit. We really wanted to focus on that idea that Murdocks always get up."
On the character & future of Melvin Potter:
"Once we actually see him, I really wanted to go full on with the idea that, y'know, there's something mentally unstable about him. A bit childlike... Obviously you see hints that he may become the Gladiator in the future, you see the pattern and you see his schematics for saw blades."
On the possibility that Leland Owlsley's son may be The Owl:
"Leland Owlsley, The Owl, had a father who was in high finance. So, uh, will his son Lee be The Owl? We'll have to wait and see. But I was always fascinated by the fact that The Owl had a father in high finance and we really wanted to play around with that."
On the absence of a post credits sequence in the series
"Originally in episode seven, the scene with Stick and his mysterious partner, which most people know who he is. That'll also key you off, the closing credits [had a name]. We wanted that to be a post-credit. We discovered, we ran afowl of Netflix with their automatically starting the next episode, they don't do post-credit stuff. So okay, we'll fade to black and we'll come up. We did have some discussions early on about a post-credit scene for the finale."
On how much of the Iron Fist references are going to carry over into Dardevil season 2 or The Defenders:
"Being the first show out of this sixty hour experiment that Marvel's doing, I wanted to lay some ground work. Whether or not that grows into something bigger, we'll have to see as the other shows progress. But obviously with the Steel Serpent, a nod to Iron Fist and that world which is coming up down the line. So, uh, I really wanted to try and weave in as much as I could... With some of the Iron Fist mythology, it felt natural to drop that in. So hopefully we'll see more of this in the future."
