Each Marvel Netflix Series Is Eligible For Multiple Seasons

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos says Marvel's Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Defenders miniseries are all eligible for multiple seasons. "They're all eligible to go into multiple seasons for sure, and [we]contemplate that they will."

Did you think the Marvel/Netlfix experiement would end after each Marvel superhero assembled in The Defenders miniseries?  Think again!  Speaking today at The Winter 2015 TCA's, Netflix's Ted Sarandos shared a few new details. Here's a rundown of what he told reporters:

-Each Marvel Netflix series will be roughly one year apart; with the amount of time between each series ranging from 8 to 15 months. "We're not trying to hit a fall programming schedule or hit a grid number.  We want to give them enough room and enough time to make a great show. I don't want to set up a rigid time table."

- The most intriguing news emerging would be the fact that each of the Marvel Netflix series are elligble for additional seasons.  "They're all eligible to go into multiple seasons for sure, and [we] contemplate that they will."

-
As far as what factors go into deciding what and how many of the series go into a second season, Sarandos stated that it depends on a number of factors. "Definitely in how well we are addressing both the Marvel fanbase but also the broader fanbase who may or may not ever get into one of these series because of their own preconceived notions. One thing we have [is] a really great history of [combining] the personalized merchandising and the subscription model that allows people to be a little more adventurous about what they watch. We may find that an audience way broader than the typical Marvel audience will try and fall in love with these shows and with the Marvel brand, and it will be universe-expanding for Marvel too."

Unlike the current crop of superhero shows on basic telvision, Netflix doesn't releae their viewership numbers meaning that it will be a little more difficult to gauge whether Daredevil and co. are successful from a viewership standpoint.  Still, with not a lot of details curently available on the Daredevil series and its debut a mere 3 months away, comic book fans are certainly interested in seeing what a Marvel/Netflix collaboration can produce.

Daredevil will premiere on Netflix on April 10.

They say one show a year, but I'm still willing to bet Jessica Jones will hit in November.

I love Iron Fist, but I don't think there's enough there for more than 13 hours of his own story. The second season should combine him and Cage into a Heroes for Hire show.

@blackandyellow There's actually a lot they can do with Iron Fist. Since these first set of shows are provably going to be heavily New York based, I assume they'll cover his origin story with Harold Meachum and Master Khan and whoever else. Then if they do a second season, you still have Steel Serpent and the Immortal Weapons. Iron Fist will b one of the most unique characters Marvel will be putting out so I assume the general audience will love it.

But Heroes for Hire sounds awesome too. Rush Hour + superheroes could make for a great, fun watch.

Jessica Jones is a strong character, but she's so new that after Purple Man I don't know where they'll go. Maybe they'll give her more cases involving other super-powered characters.

Luke Cage is going to be [frick]ing awesome though. His backstory and supporting characters/villains are probably the most relevant out of all of the Defenders. Corrupt cops, gangs, racial tension, wrong accusations are still around today (ex Eric Garner)

I don't know if I want multiple seasons though honestly. Think I'd rather just have new characters instead like maybe Punisher, Moon Knight, and Cloak and Dagger. Maybe instead of second seasons we could get DareDevil and Heroes for Hire movies!!!

Luke Cage won't happen until 2016. Plus, he'll be appearing in JJ's Netflix series. Quit freaking out, people.

Let's be honest, who outside a small fraction of people actually care or have any interest in a Jessica Jones or Luke Cage show? Those aren't even b or c list characters, they are D list at best.

Daredevil is the only one that will be a real success simply because of recognition.

So, one per year. So it will be five years before we get a second year of daredevil?
JamesMan
JamesMan - 1/7/2015, 11:38 AM
8-15 months between each show?

But what if you have a season 2 does that mean I'd have to wait like over 40 months for a season 2 of Daredevil so the first season of each show can premiere?

We need a more clear statement.

Come on Marvel get your act together on the TV side. There really is no excuse for this I can understand two shows per year, but not a single Netflix production per year. Spend some of your MCU money and get up to speed!

@Nick56 I'd hardly call them D-List. Luke Cage was the leader of the Secret Avengers post Civil War for [frick] sake.

@LMB10 Marvel got started on DD in May of last year. They were around the same point in September for AKA JJ. They will likely release it closer to August/September.

Daredevil and AKA Jessica Jones should get 2nd seasons. But Iron Fist and Luke Cage should be combined into a Heroes for Hire show.

What's that Trudy? You think these show will suck ass? Those DC CW shows are simply the best?

Man...screw you bitch. You haven't even seen the Marvel Netflix shows.

@TheRealRemyLebeau

What's that Remy? You think the DC shows are so good...they're better than the Marvel Studios films? DC Comics...the new trend setter?

Bitch...watch the Walking Dead.

I would eventually like them to combine Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones into a Heroes for Hire show. Then bring other characters to have their own show. Punisher or Moon Knight would be nice.
