Gareth Evans On Directing A Superhero Movie

What if Marvel Studios came knocking at Gareth Evans' door to make an action-packed superhero movie? That was the precise question put to the The Raid director at last night's Frightfest. There's one problem however says Evans...

Gareth Evans Iron Fist
Flicks and the City caught up with director Gareth Evans, who's quickly amassing a sizable following based on his work on The Raid. After discussing plot details and stuntman injuries on The Raid 2: Berthendal, Evans was asked what he thought about directing a superhero movie, potentially a Marvel Studios installment. Said Evans, "It's tough. The thing is right now, where I am, the kind of things that I'm doing, I don't know if I fit the superhero mold yet. It's something I need to learn at some point but I don't know if I can deliver a PG-13 movie. I don't know how to do that yet. I should learn but yeah, I'm not sure. Maybe a darker, superhero [film] from Marvel." Based on Evans work on The Raid and other action films, I think he'd be perfect for the guy on the right.

And if you're unfamiliar with his work, I present Exhibit A for your enjoyment.

@MexicanSuperman: Captain America is great. Why wih someone else directed it? Better action?

I like indie guys but, from what I have seen of The Raid: Redemption, it's just really violent. I don't mind it cause I love The Expendables films. But, he doesn't impress me as a director outside of clear and cool action scenes. Again, I won't say he is a bad director or the film is bad. Just neither have my interest. Last time I let people convince me on here to watch a movie, I was left watching an unimpressive, average Children of Men. Anyway, as I said. From what I have seen of the first Raid movie, I'll pass on it and the sequel.

@EdgyOutsider Just go watch The Raid now, its not impressive because its violent, its because of the amazing choreography teamed with great inventive camera work. Just give it a go

Gareth Evans is good but i do agree with him on learning to direct a PG-13 movie. i dont think he has reached to that level to do a PG-13 movie for Marvel Studio.

He should do DAREDEVIL.
DD is a top teir martial artist in the Marvel U.

This director can direct a massive battle that pits DD versus the ninjas from The Hand.
Actually show an epic fight of Hero vs. Ninja...never got that on big screen yet. (wink)

He can do Moon Knight. With that being said Marvel Studios should open a subdivision for lesser budget movies that can be rated R, something like Marvel Knughts comics division. A place for Punisher, Ghost Rider, Blade and other properties. They should focus on a strong script and director and not so much "eye candy" .

If Scott Adkins gets the role of Iron Fist with The Rock as Luke Cage with Evans directing, I'm down. He'd also be good for a Daredevil and Blade reboot.

@bluman

universal has the rights to the Incredible Hulk. the movie was produce by Marvel Studio but distributed by Universal Pictures. so it does not rule out for Marvel Studio doing the same thing for Namor

His brutal style of filmmaking would be great to capture the true badassery of the dangerous characters.

@Swiftsword

Superhero movies don't have to be profanity filled blood festivals. My 18 year old nephew even thought the "Flashpoint Paradox" with its extra profanity and bloodletting was over-the-top. He would have preferred a more toned down version even though he is a big fan of the horror genre. A good story need not rely on low-end vernacular to be good.
