Gareth Evans Would Be Up For Directing An IRON FIST Movie; But It'd Have To Be Rated R

While chatting to Total Film, the director of The Raid 2 reveals that he'd be interested in dipping his toe into the CBM world with a martial arts based property like Marvel's Iron Fist, but it would need to be on his terms.

As we know, Iron Fist is one of the characters Marvel will be bringing to the small screen when he makes his live-action debut on Netflix. But should Danny Rand ever make it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and I've heard whispers that he just might), which director has the best tools for the job? Well, if the name Gareth Evans just flashed through your mind, you wouldn't be the first! Evans' The Raid, and by all accounts its sequel, have cemented him as one of the best action directors working today - so who better to bring the martial arts master to the screen? Total Film put the name to him and as it turns out it's not the first time he's heard it ("Ah yeah, a few people have mentioned that to me before"), but if Evans was to take on a CBM he'd have one pretty major stipulation that might be off-putting to a family-friendly studio like Marvel.

"My big thing right now is figuring out how to do that action style - and would someone like Marvel let me do a R-rated movie? This isn't me going against PG-13 movies, it's just that the way I shoot action, it doesn't need to be bloody or aggressive or 'stabby stabby' with knives, but it's about when someone swings a punch and there's a connection there, I'm not going to hide that with a camera. I get involved with the guys in that choreography design so I can understand the intricacies of what they've done, so that when I shoot it, what the camera angles should be and the editing should be, it's doing justice to all the work they've put into it. In PG-13 action, you hide the chaos and fill it with sound. That's something I can't do. So [if I made a comic book movie], it'd have to be an R."

The way he's explaining it. It wouldn't be an R movie, at least in my eyes. Maybe the MPAA would think diffidently.

that would be awesome!! ,maybe he could direct an episode of the netflix marvel series, that is supposed to be more gritty then the movies and i think he can get away with having what he is describing

even as an R movie this movie would become a Marvel classic if he was directing.

i'd be up for him directing iron fist but there is no way that marvel studios would ever make an r-rated movie,i wish they would but i can't see it.

Yeah, don't think an "R" rated Iron Fist movie would happen. Would be perfect to direct though.

I don't think Iron Fist is even a good fit for an R rated movie. I mean I get it if you want to go crazy bloody action. But if you want to go kung fu craziness it doesn't have to be rated R. I mean I look at a ton of Jet Li martial art epics and plenty of them aren't rated R. But I do like Gareth Evans a lot and think he would kill it.

would NEVER happen. Marvel Studio's is too money hungry to ever attach an R rating to one of their films. they ONLY make fun comedy filled family movies.

R-rated will probably not happen during the current MCU.

But I would love to have him direct it. The Raid was EPIC!

I wouldn't be against it honestly. I don't see what he was saying though as an R rated movie.

Honestly, the MCU movies aren't that nonviolent. In fact they have some violent stuff happen in them.

Loki cuts a guys eye out of his head (it's not shown but it's obvious what he's doing)
Captain America shoves a guy off a plane and though the blades (blood is shown briefly)
Iron Man shoots a guy with a nail gun. (Shown briefly.)
Hulk kills several people in brutal ways. (Shown briefly.)
People are shot, smashed, blown up, etc. all the time in all the movies.

Naturally, it's not like RoboCop or Terminator violence but I could easily see what he's talking about done in a PG-13 action movie.

Isn't Iron Fist getting his own NetFlix show? Why would you need to make it a hard R? I would be cool with him directing one but I don't think making Iron Fist R rated will make any difference.

Iron fist..

I always thought that sounded like some sort of depraved sexual act involving a glove, sandpaper, and a deficiency of lube.

Nothing to do with blood n guts, as he says in the interview, but I agree that if your character is known for being a martial artist, the fights should have a bit of bite to them. You can get away with quite a bit with PG13 these days though.

@Superotherside

Its about overall tone and direction. The guy in TDK getting sliced comes off more violent, compared to those other examples you posted. I think certain scenes come off more visceral, depending on the context of the film. You put in about three F words and TDK/TDKR could have been rated R.

Gareth probably wants to get real gritty and not hold back....something that Marvel does.

I once asked him on twitter which MCU movie he'd direct, he said he's always been a fan of The Punisher...
