IRONHEART: More Evidence That Sacha Baron Cohen Is Playing Mephisto Has Surfaced

It seemed like a hard-to-believe rumor at the time, but Deadline has now added some legitimacy to a recent report that Sacha Baron Cohen has been cast as Mephisto in the upcoming Ironheart series...

A rumor did the rounds that Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen had joined an upcoming MCU project (most likely Ironheart) as Mephisto over the weekend, and Deadline has now seemingly corroborated the report.

While the trade doesn't come right out and confirm that Cohen will play the demonic villain in the upcoming Disney+ series, they do add a lot of legitimacy to the rumor by mentioning that there's "been talk on the set about Cohen being part of Ironheart, likely playing Mephisto."

If true, this would be a pretty big deal. We still don't know very much about the Ironheart series beyond the basic premise, but Mephisto's involvement would obviously have major supernatural implications for the story. Could the character have something to do with The Hood (Anthony Ramos) gaining his magical abilities, perhaps?

However Mephisto ends up factoring into the show, it sounds like he's going to have a significant part to play in the MCU going forward, with Deadline adding that he could show up in WandaVision spinoff, Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Sam Bailey (Brown Girls) and Angely Barnes (Mythic Quest) were recently announced as Ironheart's directors, and have reportedly been enlisted to helm at least one episode a piece. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler will executive produce via his Proximity production company.

What do you guys make of these Mephisto reports? Are you glad the character finally looks set to make his MCU debut after all the WandaVision speculation? Be sure to drop us a comment down below.

@tmp3 - Cool if true. Bummer about him not being Norrin though. Who else could be him? John david washington? Trevante Rhodes? Ricky whittle?

@MCUKnight11 - Out of the 3 you mentioned I'd cast Ricky as Silver Surfer,Trevante is one of my top choices for an eventually recasted T'Challa or DeathLok as for John David I think if they do go a with a diff route with CYCLOPS or Reed he'd be my choice otherwise I'd like him as Night Thrasher

Mephisto went steady with a teenager. Let's just get that out of the way before the torrential downpour of tears about how Cohen isn't dark and evil enough for the role.

The trouble with the comic book adaptation industry is that your remark demonstrates how they view the character, surface level. If a character has done 'x' thing in comics its automatically acceptable for them to adapt the character in a variety of ways including 'x' regardless of if 'x' was in a different situation or even if they misunderstood the circumstances of 'x'

The general comic audience know Mephisto from 'One More Day' and the MCU audience will have been associated with him via people discussing him in relation to WandaVision (Source material and remarks on Nicholas Scratch both in-universe and behind-the-scenes) and Spider-man:NWH (Which adapted One More Day) along with the recent remarks about the goat demon making creepy soul pacts in She-Hulk. They'll view Mephisto solely as a demon who misleads and tricks individuals and gets them to create pacts for nefarious means.

As such when the MCU adapts Mephisto, it needs to be handled with that mindset in mind. They won't be interested in seeing Mephisto being some weird awkward incel on a date who gets overshadowed by the other characters in the show. Just because it happened in comics does not mean it should be adapted in film and especially not when you've primed the MCU audience to want Mephisto to appear in a certain light.

@Scarilian - They won't

They who? The people who pretend to hold comic accuracy sacred but the closest they've ever gotten to one was to the Archie Digests at a grocery store checkout? The general audience doesn't give a flip. The people that do are a minority. And they're a minority that's often wrong about their claims.

Also the MCU didn't prime their audience for Mephisto. You monkeys did it to yourselves.

It'd be subverting expectations if the MCU actually handled a character seriously nowadays. Every one of them is just turned into a joke or treated so poorly by the writing and the script they barely even qualify as a character as opposed to a collection of tropes.
