LOKI Director Kate Herron Explains Birth Of The Multiverse: "Separate [Timelines] Are Now Connecting"

The final few moments of Loki featured the birth of the Multiverse, and director Kate Herron has now explained what exactly we were seeing after Sylvie delivered that fatal blow to He Who Remains...

The season finale of Loki blew us all away with a cliffhanger ending and the rebirth of the Multiverse, which came about after Sylvie killed He Who Remains, a Kang the Conqueror Variant who has spent a million lifetimes attempting to stop his villainous alternate selves from reemerging and going to war with each other.

All those branching timelines have created endless opportunities for the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward, with projects like What If? and Spider-Man: No Way Home set to further explore the Multiverse.

During a recent interview with Murphy's Multiverse, Loki director Kate Herron teased what we were seeing on screen and what those different branches connecting actually means.

"So, there’s the branches, right, which is like the alternative reality. But then something, you’ll see it. It’s very subtle, but in the very last shot where you see the Multiverse, there’s basically other bigger physical timeline branches," the filmmaker teased. "So, it’s almost like these different separate trees that are now connecting."

"It’s almost like a bridge. If you imagine the branch, it is like another reality. But if the branch extends beyond a certain point, it will then connect to other physical timelines. That last shot we did, there are other like thicker [branches] that are meant to be like our timeline. And there are other timelines like that and the branches are the connectors basically."

Could those connecting branches be what leads to characters from other worlds finding their way to the MCU? It's been rumoured for a while now that Spider-Man: No Way Home's premise will see the villains from past moves pulled into the same reality as Tom Holland's Peter Parker, so it's possible these timelines all linking up is what opens the door.

We'll have to wait and see, but Herron's comments definitely leave us with plenty to think about.

I'm totally fine if the Quantum Realm being that bridge she talks about, but other than that I really wouldn't see the point of Marvel bringing in physicists to work it all out for Endgame.

They finally had something that made sense, and now it feels like they just throw that all out the window again.

@bkmeijer - End Game made zero sense. They threw it al out upon shooting that film.

@bkmeijer - But how did Cap return in Endgame? Wouldn't he have been murdered by the TVA if he created branches while returning the stones?

They still haven't figured that out yet lol

@McMurdo @mastakilla39 - Feel like Endgame made perfect sense. Every jump back in time is a new timeline, and seperate from that a timeline (or rather that reality) is doomed when not all six stones are there to help defend from the likes of Dormammu.

So, Cap did go back in time and created a new timeline (and I assume jumped back to the main one through the QR), but apparently that branch did not came near to the TVA's red line and therefore didn't need to be pruned.

@bkmeijer - Yeah but with all this vagueness we "don't know" that. For all we know the Cap who came back can be a skrull, Captain Hydra, or a Variant. Marvel does a good and poor job at keeping things vague because their whole MCU formula is built upon that. Endgame's "moments" work but its storytelling...is a complicated mess. Critics and fans are grading Endgame based on its "moments" rather than the cohesiveness of the overall film and I think that's the problem.

@mastakilla39 - I completely agree with Endgame being a ''moments'' movie. For example, there is no urgency and the villain is only introduced halfway through (a three hour movie that is even).

Don't mind certain things to be vague though, especially with such a large franchise. If everything's set in stone, it's gonna be hard maintaining every single moving piece.

@generictheeric - yep, that's exactly how I feel too

@mastakilla39 - The TVA said they were ok with what the Avengers were doing... just not ok with what Loki was doing.

mastakilla39 - 7/21/2021, 9:40 AM
@bkmeijer - Agree I have no problem with that too but that vagueness is starting to feel like a flaw rather than a good thing because the film or series feels incomplete. I just wouldn't rank Endgame as the "best" or call it a "perfect" film because of that.

bkmeijer2 - 7/21/2021, 11:42 AM
@mastakilla39 - no me neither. Infinity War is still the best in my opinion, and Winter Soldier my favorite. Endgame did have some of the ''best'' moments though.

And there is something that does feel incomplete with old Cap. Not really that we don't know how he returned the stones, but more what he did in those 70 years. Can't imagine he stood by when he what would happen.

Hopefully we will find a worthy villain in one of these alternate realities and not just Jonathan Majors looking like Boney M eating an apple.

@MarvelousMarty - pfft. Like Majors wasn’t the single greatest thing to come from these Disney+ shows

So pretty much ‘the Raimi Spider-Man timeline and the X-Men timeline are still just as important as the MCU timeline, please don’t get mad at us’

Makes sense. That way if/when they resolve all this they can still show us things going on in separate universes if they want
Mugens

@Twenty23Three - Thinking on what you wrote that could mean that each and every actor that had ever played a hero or villain in a Marvel movie could theoretically return. Even Snipes as the original Blade. The mind boggles at the possibilities.

@Mugens - I have been proposing this for years... and i am blown away that it looks like it is actually going to happen. my take on it then is the same as now... people loved them in those movies... why not build on that? they don't have to be in the main timeline but they can make the occasionally crossover or cameo. Even Affleck as DD.

I really hope this ksn't how they are planning to bring the X-Men. Although, following the things that Loki set up, one would think the main MCU timeline, or the Sacred Timeline, would have their own version of the X-Men and the Fox-Men and any other versions would just be variants.
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 7/21/2021, 3:35 AM
@CorndogBurglar - they are gonna pull of DC crisis on us. All this phase will build up to a multiversal showdown, then the universe will be returned to one timeline which is a mashup of all the things they want to keep
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/21/2021, 3:59 AM
@Twenty23Three - I could see that. But I still hope they reveal the MCU X-Men before all that happens, because I really don't want to see the Fox-Men become the main MCU X-Men.
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 7/21/2021, 4:26 AM
@CorndogBurglar - I completely agree. I kept waiting for a reference to a super solider program using people with abilities in FATWS or anything really that would say ‘look Mutants are about in this universe, people don’t really know about them much but they are a thing don’t worry’ because the further we get the harder it is to organically introduce a whole species of people to the universe that’s no one seems to be aware of. I mean at least Namor can be underwater the whole time
JonC
JonC - 7/21/2021, 9:04 AM
@CorndogBurglar - the multiverse has always existed... the TVA monitors simply showed the one they were acting on... but beyond the red line... a 50/50 line to the next nearest universe they were always there. Foxverse actors will likely make an appearance as they are needed and Marvel is now free to use old footage to retcon bad stories (with the help of the TVA to prune the truly bad stories)... but occasionally those actors will crossover... they will be variants of the new actors chosen for the sacred timeline MCU version which will get far more big screen time.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/21/2021, 10:49 AM
@JonC - Honestly, I feel like is obviously all going to culminate with Secret Wars. And we'll see a multiversal war, and a ton of Fox and Sony actors making a return. But when that is done, I'm willing to bet we'll go back to the one Sacred Timeline (the MCU).

And while SOME Fox actors might stick around in the MCU permanently, I'm willing to bet it's more of a send off to those movies and actors and we'll be moving forward with only the MCU actors.

And even if the multiverse stays intact, I'm betting there won't be any kind of focus on it at all. This is all a storyline, like the Infinity Saga. Once this ends, however that turns out, we'll likely be left watching only the MCU and maybe some glimpses of other timelines in What If....assuming that is successful and stays around that long.
