For many, Loki is still the best MCU-set Disney+ series (it's officially the most-watched, anyway) we've seen on the streaming service, so there was understandably a lot of disappointment when it was announced that director Kate Herron would not be returning to helm the second season.

At the time, Herron said she felt she'd taken the God of Mischief as far as she could and wanted to move on to other projects, and the filmmaker has now elaborated on her decision during an interview with Variety.

Herron reveals that she did have a “conversation” with Marvel Studios about potential returning before deciding that it "wasn't for her."

“I was on the show for like three years in total,” said the filmmaker. “I just felt like I poured everything into it. It’s almost like a campfire story that every filmmaker kind of brings their take and their perspective. I just felt like I gave so much to this. I was like, ‘You know what, I feel like this was my effort for ‘Loki.’ I felt like having someone new and with fresh eyes — that, for me, is what will make a good season.”

Herron also addressed Doctor Who writer-producer Russell T. Davies recently blasting Loki's (Tom Hiddleston) coming out moment as a “ridiculous, craven, feeble gesture.” Herron, who identifies as queer herself, actually agreed that more needs to be done, but is still very proud of the scene.

“I don’t disagree that there should be bigger stories being told, but — and I think he has a right to his opinion — I’m very proud of what we did in the show. Russell is a hero of mine, but like I’ve said, I hope that we did at least open the door and that more stories will come.”

Loki season 2 is scheduled to begin shooting over the next few weeks. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron will not return, with Eric Martin, who penned "The Nexus Event" and "For All Time. Always" episodes, taking over as Head Writer.

“ After doing an excellent job directing the first season of Loki”

DEBATEABLE

@SpaceParanoids - I didn't really have a problem with how the show looked or flowed from a directorial perspective. My issues were the underwhelming story and disappointing use of variants. I suppose it's my fault really, I keep expecting the MCU to go absolutely bonkers with multiverse and variant hijinks like the comics, and what we get is always much more understated. When Loki barely glimpsed the potential of variants, and No Way Home had the variant Spiderman just kinda walk into a dining room, I expected the Multiverse of Madness to finally go wild with the antics, especially with Sam [frick]ing Raimi behind the wheel..... and it did not. At all.

But they all have visually looked good to me. For the most part. It's mainly been underwhelming stories.

@ElricReturns - That’s my main issue, the story, the character development and the underwhelming and disjointed nature of how they presented the multiverse.

Personally I would have liked it if when the Avengers took the infinity stones out of their timelines they created off shoots of the main timeline and THAT actually causes the multiverse.

Imagine their actions to save the universe help send it into chaos.

@SpaceParanoids - that's not a bad twist, and still something they could implement in the 5th hour.

I’m wondering if she’s not returning because the first season was horrible?

All I learned from this article is that Russell T Davies needs to calm down slightly.

@TheManWithoutFear - Right? Did he expect Loki to do some huge broadway showtune titled "Im Bi" featuring a threesome with a man and a woman? "Nothing less will do" -Russell Davies (whoever that is anyway), probably...

If the show didn't end on such a cliffhanger, it would make sense she wouldn't return. If I poured three years of my life into something I sure would see it through to it's end

in other words, she left because in marvel and "the gringos" in general they don't know that stories need an end... All they want is to continue consuming and devouring everything...

@JuanRGuijarro - the show was announced as the only of the series to be multiple seasons, so it's not like it was a surprise.

Loki was good better than The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and Moon Knight, about the same as Hawkeye.

WandaVision is still the best show, the acting was great.

She said she poured 3 years into the show but why does it feel like she poured only 2 weeks.

Yeah right.

Real reason is often creative differences.

Her direction was the weakest part of the show. Things like the sloppy “one shot” scene in episode 3 come to mind.
The show was incredible but it definitely had pacing problems.
Which usually falls on the editor and director.

Personally greatly disliked much about Season 1. Finale was better than the rest but not enough to make up for the mountain of lackluster. Story was unengaging for wide swathes, elementary level antagonists and Hiddleston seemed somehow weaker and less charismatic than any other point in the MCU.

Wilson, Majors, the gator, and the incredibly appealing Mbatha were the high points but the rest was paltry, at best.

Hope Season 2 can up the ante because her vision was about as appealing as Boden and Fleck’s, which means it wasn’t.

Disappointing she isn't returning. Loki was my favorite of the MCU shows easily.
