LOKI Director Kate Herron Weighs In On Perception That Sylvie & Loki's Relationship Is "Incestual"

We know that Loki and Sylvie are Variants of the same being, so doesn't that make their romantic relationship just a little... creepy? In a new interview, Loki director Kate Herron weighs in...

After admitting their connection and feelings for each other in the previous episodes, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) finally shared a kiss in the season finale of Loki, "For All Time. Always."

Some believe Sylvie only returned The God of Mischief's affections in order to distract him long enough to push him through the portal, but director Kate Herron recently confirmed that her feelings were genuine, which does kind of open a whole other can of Multiversal worms.

Since Loki and Sylvie are two Variants of the same being, doesn't that make their romantic connection just a little... creepy?

While speaking to Polygon about that kiss, Herron explained why she doesn't necessarily see Loki and Sylvie's intimate relationship as being "incestual."

“My interpretation of it is that they’re both Lokis, but they aren’t the same person. I don’t see them as being like brother and sister. They have completely different backgrounds […] and I think that’s really important to her character. They sort of have the same role in terms of the universe and destiny, but they won’t make the same decisions.”

Herron went on to acknowledge that Loki falling for another version of himself is an "exploration of self-love,” but only in the sense that the God of Mischief is finally beginning to understand his own motives and integrity.

“[The show is] looking at the self and asking ‘What makes us us?’” she says. “I mean, look at all the Lokis across the show, they’re all completely different. I think there’s something beautiful about his romantic relationship with Sylvie, but they’re not interchangeable.”

How do you guys feel about the Variants hooking up? Would you rather they continued on as platonic friends and partners moving forward? Drop us a comment down below.

I mean it’s essentially the same as if they had Loki imagine her and fall in love with her ultimately it’s a reflection of loving himself

Marvel’s been known to force romantic relationships when it’s not really necessary or beneficial to the story. Loki is no exception. Still an awesome show though.

@TheBatlist - I mean I understand where you’re coming from, I don’t agree with it but it’s your opinion so I respect it. For me it’s the journey of Loki caring solely about himself, to him falling for someone. There was more to this romantic relationship I thought then the others you alluded to.

@JohnCastillo - That’s not really new for Loki; he’s always cared about others. His mother, then Thor, then Odin in his final moments.

Sure, the romance is new, but him just caring about others isn’t new territory

@DaHyro - You’re right. He did care about Thor, Odin and Freya. But this time it changed him, not only that romance but seeing all those other versions of Lokis and how alone they were.. even with him caring about his family he was still selfish and narcissistic and power hungry, this time he doesn’t want to be alone anymore, he doesn’t want to “rule” he wanted to save the world and stay with Sylvie.. to me this is new territory for him.

@TheBatlist - not necessary but appreciated... Loki has had a hole in his emotional life that needs filling and leaving it open is why he does what he does. Its a great character arc.

@JohnCastillo - I suppose you’re right, but for me, this is exactly what the old Loki from 2018 would’ve done too. Not saying it’s bad, but it’s just a little familiar for me (with that romance twist, of course lol)
JohnCastillo
JohnCastillo - 7/22/2021, 1:45 PM
@DaHyro - For me there’s a big difference between this and 2018 Loki… this Loki feels like he’s truly become good, where I don’t feel he will backstab someone, the other Loki he had changed a lot and become a better person but I never trusted him.

@TheBatlist - yeah, no. Loki falling in love with his variant completely fits his narcissism. And Sylvie, also a Loki, falling in love with herself and finally opening up personally to another being is also an evolution of the character she started as, even if she stuck to her guns after the kiss. No one forced love here it was as natural as it gets in regards to this show.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 7/23/2021, 9:49 AM
@JohnCastillo - precisely. Sylvie is the catalyst that essentially causes Loki’s evolution as a self serving character. The irony of it all is that she is essentially HIM. So his narcissism still shines despite his empathy for Sylvie

@DaHyro - taking precedent over his own selfish desires though? Thanos scene was it really.

Bro fell in love with himself….but also they have the same parents in a way too, albeit them being variants of one another….it’s a mind[frick]
ALF9001
ALF9001 - 7/22/2021, 9:13 AM
@BlackBeltJones - exactly. If they have the same parents, no matter the variance, they are siblings.

Still, not creepy enough to ruin it for me.
JonC
JonC - 7/22/2021, 9:47 AM
@BlackBeltJones - why would they have the same parents... he was adopted... we have no idea who her parents are... its like saying the alligator loki and our loki have the same parents... makes 0 cents.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 7/22/2021, 10:57 AM
@JonC - if they’re both loki then she too is a frost giant like him. She IS HIM, just from another universe.

His parents and her parents, but they just may differ in gender or other factors but they’re still essentially Laufey and his wife, just a variation of them.
PhoenixBlade
PhoenixBlade - 7/22/2021, 11:13 AM
@BlackBeltJones - If you think about it they’re not at all the same. Different sperm different people getting married. All these alternate different things to occur in an universe. They’d share DNA much like how the entire human race share DNA.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 7/22/2021, 11:33 AM
@SamaelSaint - hmmm good point.

I think the central conceit that they’re both “Loki” in a way is the foundation. The whole idea is that they are all Loki so he’s falling in love with himself emotionally and mentally. They’re the same in ways like that at the very least.
PhoenixBlade
PhoenixBlade - 7/22/2021, 11:52 AM
@BlackBeltJones - I feel the idea of people saying he’s falling in love with himself is actually self love. Realising everything he admires about Sylvie are the same traits he has. Therefore he cannot hate himself. I think people are largely caught up in seeing a so called romance and getting caught up in the semantics of it all opposed to seeing the effects of the romance and how long term it create a new paradigm for Loki. He’s grown from it for the better, while she’s become more bitter. I think she’s served her purpose in Loki’s arc and that they probably won’t force the romance further, but people will of course then see the romance as pointless when it’s done more for the character of Loki than anything else.

@BlackBeltJones - and ITS HAWT
McMurdo
McMurdo - 7/23/2021, 10:22 AM
@BlackBeltJones - not necessarily. Not all Loki’s need to inherently be frost giants to fit their roles. I’m not saying she definitively is not a frost giant just that she could not be
McMurdo
McMurdo - 7/23/2021, 10:24 AM
@SamaelSaint - he does say the reason he sees Sylvie as different than the rest of them is because she wants to destroy the TVA and create free will rather than rule the TVA for herself.

There is no real world equivalent of falling in love with an alternate dimension version of yourself so there is no moral president for us to compare it to. The closest thing we can liken it to is incest, but since we have no actual was to meet and have sex with alternate dimension versions of ourselves, this philosophical debate is a waste of time. It's a work of fiction.
