LOKI Head Writer Eric Martin Rewrote Most Of Season 1 After Michael Waldron Left For DOCTOR STRANGE Sequel

While Michael Waldron has received the lion's share of acclaim for Loki season 1's brilliance, it appears we should be thanking season 2 Head Writer Eric Martin. Find more details after the jump...

Eric Martin was credited on Loki season 1 as the sole writer of "The Nexus Event" and a co-writer on the finale, "For All Time. Always." However, his contributions to the Disney+ series were grander in scope than we realised.

Martin, who is now season 2's Head Writer, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and shared details on the extent of work he did on those first six episodes.

While season 1 Head Writer Michael Waldron typically receives the lion's share of praise for spearheading the show during its first year, this may go some way in explaining why Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness wasn't quite as good as we expected (and why he's supposedly no longer penning Avengers: Secret Wars).

"So when Michael left to go do Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he passed off the reins to me for season one, so I was the production writer and we co-wrote episode six. So I finished that one off, and then Covid hit and I had to rewrite a ton of the season because of all the new realities we were facing. So [the promotion] was somewhere along that process, but I can’t even remember when. I should probably write these things down."

"It would be nice to actually know the date when my life changed, but Marvel contacted me and said, 'Hey, we’re going to do season two, for sure.' We had talked about it for a long time, but it hadn’t been a certainty. So they asked me to be the head writer, and it made a lot of sense for me."

"I had been so deep in everything from the beginning of the season one writer’s room all the way through production and everything, so it was just a natural step. Because I’d taken over for production and then rewritten things throughout the pandemic, it felt like I’d already done this job in a smaller way. So it was a comfortable leap."

Martin has established himself as one heck of a writer, prompting many fans to push for the Loki scribe to pen the upcoming Avengers movies. However, like Waldron and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania's Jeff Loveness, he too hails from Rick and Morty, so whether handing him the keys to those projects is advisable remains up for debate.

What we can say is that Loki season 2 has been firing on all cylinders and is on its way to becoming Marvel Studios' best Disney+ TV series.

Be sure to check back here on Thursday for our in-depth recap of the penultimate episode!

Overall, I'm enjoying Loki season 2.

@JoshWilding I assume you mean Martin here? Otherwise I'm really confused.

Anyway, I agree having a Rick & Morty writer as the scribe for your biggest movies isn't smart. Rather see them use writers that have a long time at Marvel (like McFeely & Markus or Sommers & McKenna)

Whatever they did, it's the best TV MCU by far. So relieving to see some REAL GOOD Marvel stuff for a change.

@Fogs - I'd fairly disagree on season 2.

@dagenspear - It's being very good to me. Better than expected.

@Fogs - I think it's worse than season 1. Story feels halted in parts to me, character actions feel random at points and some dialogue feels forced to me.

@dagenspear - Yeah, to each their own. To me it sounds like expansion and continuity in the same style.

Can't wait to see what's coming next, and that says a lot.

Loki S1 was definitely watchable but nothing praiseworthy. S2 is on par with S1. Andor was great writing, Loki is pedestrian at best. It's only looked at fondly because its competition in the form of all Marvel writing since End Game has been horrendous. It's not because it's "woke," either. There are powerful forces who want to destroy humanity who are implanting anti-human themes into all popular culture. "Woke" is only one aspect of this evil campaign.

@California - I disagree with s2 being on par. I think it's fairly weaker.

What are you talking about? Anti-human? Come on.

@dagenspear - Wait - what? You don't know about (hushed voice) the lizard people? They don't actually look like lizards but they're cold blooded and their appendages break off easily when they're captured and then grow back. Also, they can't blink so they have to lick their own eyes periodically and their native habitat is Wall Street. Just a couple of clicks into the Dark Web and you'll find out all you need to know, if you dare...

@StSteven - That's not anti-human.

@dagenspear - Well, fair enough. I was just trying to put an (attempted) humorous explanation for what was otherwise a fairly absurd (and possibly concerning if true) post. I mean, everyone has their own views on "wokeness" and every other social movement currently going on right now, but "powerful forces who want to destroy humanity who are implanting anti-human themes into all popular culture" is a little out there, even for this site. Hopefully it's just hyperbole and nonsense and not straight-up conspiracy theory stuff. That's the last thing we need around here.

Loki season 1 was not brilliant. It was tedious, though much better than most of the D+ shows.

I disagree. I think way more of this season has ranged from lame and/or presenting things as prominent when I don't personally follow them. I think some of the writing of characters has had some cheap conflicts.

I don't know if Loki Season 2 is going to stick the landing but I sure as hell enjoy this season (and season 1) far more than I did with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. I know folks seem to enjoy the Illuminati, but I saw them only as fodder for Scarlet Witch. Just a waste of characters. Waldron had no clue to how to seamlessly incorporate Wanda from WandaVision. The film just felt incomplete as a story for Doctor Strange. Perhaps the problem with that film was Waldron was overrated based on Loki Season 1. Perhaps in truth, up to this point, it's been Eric Martin who has been underrated. Perhaps Eric Martin should take a crack at Secret Wars, if Marvel Studios isn't doing Loki season three.

Anyhow, Secret Wars is better off without Michael Waldron. I wish Marvel Studios could entice Markus and McFeely back because the success of the Captain America franchise, Infinity War, Endgame are mainly due to their collaboration with the Russos Bros. They know how to handle a large group of characters and give each character a chance to shine no matter how little screen time they get.

Well this makes all the sense in the world regarding Doc 2
