Loki's first season was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, but director Kate Herron confirmed that she wouldn't be returning for the planned second batch of episodes shortly after the series wrapped up its initial run on Disney+. Fans were understandably disappointed by the news, but there's a lot of excitement surrounding what the filmmaker does next.
In the meantime, Marvel Studios has been on the hunt for someone else to take the helm of the God of Mischief's second season, and it's going to be the directing duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.
Deadline reports that they're set to co-direct the "majority" of episodes, hopefully leaving the door to Herron at least considering coming back for one episode. It's also noted that Tom Hiddleston and Michael Waldron will executive produce Loki season 2, with Waldron no longer serving as Head Writer. Instead, Eric Martin - who penned "For All Time. Always." and "The Nexus Event" - will write all six episodes.
Benson and Moorhead are known for their work on shows like Archive 81 and The Twilight Zone. Marvel Studios enlisted them for a couple of episodes of Moon Knight and sources tell the trade that "the shoot went so smoothly, that Marvel was already looking over projects they wanted to put Benson and Moorhead on immediately and Loki season 2 quickly jumped to the top of that list."
This news bodes well for Loki season 2 beginning production later this year. A few cast members have confirmed their returns, but we've yet to hear of any new additions to the Disney+ series.
