LOKI Spoilers: Does The Season 2 Finale Remove Jonathan Majors' Kang As The Multiverse Saga's Big Bad?

The Loki season 2 finale proves to be a game-changer for the MCU's God of Mischief Stories, but where does it leave Kang and is the plan to now recast the Multiverse Saga's big bad? Here's what we know...

With Jonathan Majors due in court later this month to face charges of assault, attempted assault, harassment, and aggravated harassment, it's hard to imagine the actor remaining part of the MCU moving forward.

The Loki star may yet clear his name, but he's already been dropped from other upcoming projects (Magazine Dreams recently lost its release date despite previously being hailed as a potential Oscar frontrunner) and it's clear Disney and Marvel Studios are still waiting to see what happens in court. Whether the damage has already been done is up for debate, but because Loki season 2 was shot before the controversies, he remains a key part of the series.

In last night's finale, "Glorious Purpose," we see Majors as both Victor Timely and He Who Remains. However, with Marvel Studios said to be uncertain about its original plans for Kang after the response to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Loki ends in a way that could see the villain taken off the board.

If so, the Multiverse Saga will be left without a big bad, but there's time to introduce another antagonist between now and the next two Avengers movies. However, we'd guess The Kang Dynasty's title would likely change in that case.

During the closing moments of the finale, Loki thwarts He Who Remains' planned reincarnation by taking his place in the Citadel at the End of Time. There, he watches over the Multiverse, using his newfound time powers to keep those branches alive and allowing them to become infinite (giving people free will, in the process).

Victor, meanwhile, never receives the TVA Handbook as a child so presumably grows up as a normal, harmless, Kang Variant.

Back in the TVA, we learn they're keeping an eye out for He Who Remains' Variants, but based on how quickly Mobius dismisses the events of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, it doesn't seem as if they're overly concerned. There's still the question of the Council of Kangs, but let's face it, this wouldn't be the first time Marvel Studios has teased a future threat only to abandon the idea (by the time Captain America: Brave New World is released, it will have taken them 17 years to revisit The Leader).

Of course, the clever thing about the Loki finale is that, if Majors is cleared or Marvel Studios decides to recast, Kang can return. That Multiversal War is left as an open-ended threat which may or may not be on the horizon - who can say how truthful someone like Kang is being? - while there's still the issue of why those incursions are happening to deal with.

In many respects, though, it feels like Kang is done. The Conqueror was defeated by Ant-Man, while He Who Remains is portrayed as a far more significant threat than the goofy Variants from that post-credits scene. The entirety of season 2 has played out how he intended, with Loki forced to endure hundreds of years of hell to get right back to where he started in the season 1 finale. Now his plan to rule over a single Sacred Timeline has gone up in a puff of green smoke, why return to this well with lesser villains like Immortus or Rama-Tut?

Only time will tell where the Multiverse Saga goes from here, but if that was it for Kang, then at least he played a key role in making Loki the MCU's God of Stories!

It's all a bit of a convenient mess no wonder this doesn't get good viewing figures. What happens now. Make me understand

The Loki finale gives Marvel options that make sense narratively. I still think Majors is a lost cause as Kang regardless of whether he’s acquitted or not and the only way to move forward as Kang would be to recast.

@WhatIfRickJames - I haven’t been ready to just recast or cancel Majors. But I’m just a Waffle. I never get what I want.

@WhatIfRickJames - Loki Season 2 had a massive 40% drop in viewership Loki not a great option either.

@AllsGood - Loki isn't the big bad here DD. Who gives a shit about the drop in viewership.

“Victor, meanwhile, never receives the TVA Handbook as a child so presumably grows up as a normal, harmless, Kang Variant.”

That lead to my initial question of whether Kang is perma gone, or if that was just one of many variants. Seems open ended enough to where Marvel could continue with him or use that as a plot device to delete him as a threat.

Either way I loved this finale. I think it’s the first time I felt excited about the overall direction of the MCU in phases 4-5. I stress overall direction. Not saying there haven’t been some good films or shows here and there.

@JustAWaffle - only that version is Kang I'd argue.

The way I see it, HWR put a kid version of himself in the 1860s as part of his contingency. Giving him the book actually created a branching timeline, while not giving him book just leaves him harmless.

Other variants will show up for sure.

@JustAWaffle - I got a similar impression. It's open-ended enough to allow continuing Kang and pause it and allow other things to happen.

I feel like we'll see it unfold more with things like Deadpool 3 I'm sure. In the meantime, it reminds me of how things advanced the Infinity Stones plot in Phases 1-3 but there was also a lot happening that wasn't immediately relevant to the stones.

@bkmeijer1 - the purple auras flashing in on Loki’s version of YYgradsil showed the inevitability of the Kang/HWR reemergence.

The book not coming to Timely can be Disney’s escape hatch to recast a different actor as a different character who eventually evolves into Kang

@SauronthePower - that's a really good catch. With the infinite number of universe, there for sure will be a bunch of Kangs lurking around. Which we already know is the case thanks to Quantumania

He's 100% still there. They recognized Quantamania in the end, alerting that Kings still exist. The council of Kangs were outside of Space and Time, away from all timelines in the ending tag of Ant Man. ALL OF THEM. They aren't showing up in TVA because they are in NO timeline under the knowledge that the 616 knows too much.

@SonofaWonka - THE ONLY three that weren't called in the Council where KANG from Antman, Victor, and HWR. The rest are all meeting outside of time.
Vigor

@SonofaWonka - i keep forgetting the council of Kangs are outside of time too. Thanks for the reminder

So this sets the stage then. Loki and the tva think they have a handle on everything. However the threat from HWR is real. The council will come to deal with anyone who has "touched the multiverse" including fox universe, and 616.

And thus the deadpool3 rumored plot of the TVA recruiting prime versions of heroes from various timelines is probably true and done in an effort to combat the council

@Vigor - the flashing in of the purple auras on Loki’s green time tree, coupled with the Renslayer encounter with the purple tinged (offscreen) anomoly shows that no matter what, the Kang variants were ALWAYS inevitable

Timely not receiving the book gives Disney an ‘out’ to recast as a different character would be set on the path to evolving into Kang as opposed to Timely

Speaking of HWR, major props to Jonathan (no pun intended) on the acting this episode. That moment where he switched his speech pattern to match Timely's in a mocking way was done well. And he sold HWR with such a swagger that we hadn't seen before. I'd venture to say this was the real HWR. Cocky confident untethered. While the season 1 version of him seemed more aloof. But that was done on purpose because he wanted Sylvie to want to kill him

A shame his personal life is probably in shambles because I DO like to see this actor work

Well, there is an Avengers movie called The Kang Dinasty to be relesed in a few years, so I doubt that Kang is removed from The Multiverse Saga.

@SethBullock - Ok, now I've read some parts of the article and you say they could change the movie's title, but again, I doubt it and it would be a huge mistake, though I wouldn't be too surprised after seeing how Marvel Studios and Disney are continuously making bad decisions during these last few years.

@SethBullock -
If Deadpool 3 is successful they could easily turn Kang Dynasty into Avengers VS X-Men ending with an incursion rather than having one side or the other win.

@Scarilian - never considered it before that multiverse issues are one way to set up an Avengers vs X-Men conflict.
