LOKI Star Sophia Di Martino Knew The Romance Between Loki And Sylvie Would Probably Be Divisive

In a new interview, Loki star Sophia Di Martino admits that she had an inkling there would be a mixed response to the romance that developed between Loki and Sylvie in the Disney+ series. Check it out...

Thanks to some set photos that found their way online, we suspected for a long while that Sophia Di Martino must be playing a female version of Loki. The truth was a little more complicated, of course, and the Disney+ series would reveal that she was actually a Variant of the God of Mischief.

What none of us expected was that the two Lokis would fall for each other, and the show soon featured a romance for the ages alongside an exploration of the MCU's version of the Multiverse.

Talking to The Wrap, Di Martino admitted that she anticipated a mixed response from fans.

"I kind of expected it to be pretty split and some people to be really into it and just going along with it for the fact that it's a sort of love story. And then I knew there would be some sceptical people who weren't sure," the actress said. "For me, it's kind of an exploration of self-love. It's not as straightforward as just two people falling for each other, who are versions of the same thing."

In the same interview, the Loki star also shared her thoughts on how Sylvie is feeling in those final moments of the series after delivering a killing blow to Kang Variant, He Who Remains.

"I think in the moments right after she's killed him, she's sort of waiting for some kind of relief, to feel better about everything. And I think then her thoughts start to turn to what if he was telling the truth? What if I don't have any free will? And what if a bazillion Bogeymen are about to come out and try and get me? So she's just sort of waiting to see what happens."

It's certainly going to be interesting to see where Sylvie's story goes next, though this romance could be at an end after she betrayed Loki and likely destroyed any trust he had in her. Throw in the fact that the God of Mischief is trapped in another timeline, and things can only get crazier from here...

Considering the theme of the show it does make a lot of sense, but I still can't shake it that they have the same parents (and therefore it's incest).

Seriously, though! How are they the same person? They don't have the same body and therefor not the same DNA. They didn't live the same life. They don#t even have the same name.
Maybe they both have the same parents, but that would really only make them.... siblings. They are... they are siblings?

Actually, no. They are the same person! Same person! Somehow that makes it sound better! A little!

I could deal with the idea of a character dating or being interested in an alternate version of themselves, it is not the first time that a sci-fi show has done that - it all depends on how that is executed. The Master getting a boner for his female self in Doctor Who was more developed than the relationship between Loki and Sylvie was here.

It was developed incredibly poorly, they don't really explain why Loki is attracted to her other than 'because female', 'narcissist' and his fear of being 'alone' - which is pretty demeaning if he only likes her because she is female, because she is a variant of him and because he's desperate for attention. She has no reason to be attracted to him at all beyond a potential 'damsel in distress' vibe.

It felt like Episode 3 was meant to explore and develop the characters and relationship between the two - instead it never did that making the episode feel like pointless padding. As such Sylvie never comes across as a fleshed out character and this variant of Loki never gets developed beyond being a lonely loser.

TLDR: Fairly generic concept done better in other media that's poorly executed here

For me, it's repulsive because it's like fraternal twins hooking up. They're both Loki, which to me implies extremely similar genetics due to having the same parents, tho Loki2012 has XY chromosomes while Sylvie has XX. That's WAYYYY too close for comfort, let alone prevention of the involuntary gag reflex.

Self-love means "loving oneself as a person," not loving someone else because they're just like you. It isn't romantic and it didn't need to be given a literal representation onscreen for the audience to be shown Loki's growth.

Also, does anyone believe that kiss would have happened if Loki2012 had been paired with a male variant of himself? The writers OBVIOUSLY created Sylvie specifically to have a bad romance between Lokis. Puts all that talk about bisexuality/pansexuality/inclusion into perspective, doesn't it?

Making her a female loki was just unecesary, just to have a "twist" for the first episode, She should just have been Amora that wasnt supossed to exist, or Made her play an actual female versión of 2012 Loki, without them hooking up.
