LOKI Star Tom Hiddleston Describes God Of Mischief As A "Splendid Torch I Got Hold Of For The Moment"

In a new interview, Tom Hiddleston reflects on his time playing Loki in the MCU, and while he's non-committal on a potential return, it sounds like he has a little more to do before "passing the torch."

The recent second season of Marvel Studios' Loki concluded on a bittersweet note for the fan-favorite God of Mischief.

Though the season finale appeared to give the former villain a pretty definitive ending by allowing him to fulfil his "Glorious Purpose" and claim a throne - even if it wasn't the one he had originally envisioned - but the door was left open (or at least ajar) for him to return down the line.

After deciding to, for all intents and purposes, sacrifice himself by destroying the Temporal Loom and use his magic to gather all the loose timelines together, Loki essentially transformed into a version of Yggdrasil, the World Tree from Norse mythology.

It's implied that "God Loki" must sit here for eternity to ensure that his friends and everyone else can live in peace on the various timelines, but will this be the last we see of the character?

Tom Hiddleston has said that he truthfully doesn't know what's next for Loki in previous interviews, but while speaking to Backstage.com, he sounds a little more confident that he will get to return to the role before "passing it on.".

“Loki is ‘a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment,’ ” the actor says, quoting Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, “and I want to make it burn as brightly as I can before passing it on to future generations.”

Hiddleston declined to come right out and confirm that he will reprise the role, but did give his take on Loki's "moving" final moments in the Disney+ series.

“I hope it feels redemptive because his broken soul is partially healed; and you see that this character, who is capable of love, has made a decision from and for love,” he says. “At the end of Season 2, Loki is sitting on a kind of throne; but it’s not arrived in the shape he expected, and there’s no glory in it. There’s a kind of burden, and he’s alone. He’s doing it for his friends, but he has to stay there without them. There’s a poetic melancholy there which I found very moving.”

Maybe this really is the end of the line for Loki, but it wouldn't be the first - or second - time the character has cheated death. Hiddleston also confirms that his Thor: The Dark World demise was originally going to stick.

“As written in the first script, it was a true sacrifice. When Marvel [executives] were testing the movie, they’d given [viewers] questionnaires that said, ‘Is there anything you didn’t understand?’ ” he remembers. “Literally every single audience member said, ‘Well, obviously, Loki’s not really dead.’ ”

Obviously! Something tells us Hiddleston will get to play Loki again, at least one more time.

All six episodes of Loki season 2 are now streaming on Disney+.

@harryba11zack - yeah. What we got was a crybaby who gives up on his tantrum after watching a PowerPoint presentation.

I remember reading an interesting alternate ending to loki, where in the end it's revealed loki was manipulating everyone until he got into a position to kill the head of the tva and take his spot. THAT is loki.

I like when shows fulfill arcs. He kept saying he was burdened with glorious purpose.

You can take that as Loki's bullshit. But he's s trickster, not a liar.

He really did end up in a burdensome throne with massive power and influence.
On the contrary-- I love star wars but wish that whole "chosen one" prophecy made any sort of sense.
Anakin throwing Palpatine in the pit after having massacred children and the jedi order, only for Palpatine to be revived... is NOT who I consider to be the chosen one

@Vigor - I agree.

In regards to SW , those prophecies have intentionally been vague though I have never understood the balance thing

Having the light reign over the dark or vice versa isn’t true balance but instead both shoukd live in harmony which is why I thought we would get Grey Jesus or new kinds of Force Users at the end

I would have called them Skywalker’s not just as homage to that family but because of their strong firce abilities and tendencies towards both sides.

@TheVisionary25 - was just watching shang-chi this morning. There's a line in it that speaks to this concept of a balance of good and evil while shang's aunt is teaching him the way his mother fought. She said You are a product of all who came before you, the legacy of your family. You are your mother. And whether you like it or not, you are also your father. It really speaks to that struggle of trying to balance the good and the bad that made us into a product of success.

I loved both seasons of Loki, but I think his transition to full hero was a bit rushed. Literally before he landed in the TVA he was quite happily planning to exterminate the human race. I'm not sure I buy that he watched a few videos of his life, met a girl, and then saw the error of his ways that quicky.
Vigor
Vigor - 6/6/2024, 8:56 AM
@MarkCassidy - this is kind of what @mountainman was getting at. It's the new thing to show villains in a morally grey or sympathetic light. Can be done but needs to be believable
Batmangina
Batmangina - 6/6/2024, 9:01 AM
@MarkCassidy - You're not allowed to say that. Just like I'm not allowed to say that a 25 year old anime chick got me to watch S2 long after the flame wars died and it wasn't as bad as I expected.

I'll admit my opinion may or may not have been influenced by voluntary sex. 😶‍🌫️

Still, best MCU D+ thing I've watched. Easy.
mountainman
mountainman - 6/6/2024, 9:29 AM
@Vigor - It seems like they could have montaged a huge time jump into that first episode. I’ve seen several fictional properties where a person lives a whole life in a second. So maybe rather than watching that video, he could have been forced to live the other Loki’s life. THAT would have made the heal turn more believable.

Avengers 2012 Loki and Infinity War at his death Loki are very different people and that always seemed odd to me that he just changed from evil (in Endgame) to basically good by the first episode of the show.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/6/2024, 9:58 AM
@MarkCassidy - It WAS rushed, that is undeniable, but from a narrative standpoint kind of needed to be realy as would be bogged down way to much with way too much filler episodes to try and do a more realistic arc from full villain to hero having reset back to the point of 2012 and not where he was in Infinity War where it would have been an easier point to do the same from.

I can easily put aside how fast they went from scheming villain probably playing along to maybe take over the TVA for nefarious reasons to hero if the overall pace and narrative of the story works and in the main it did for me.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/6/2024, 10:08 AM
@mountainman - There could have been a way to imply better he was at the TVA for decades scheming and plotting to come around to where he was for most the story in episode one and two I guess. They sort of implied that a tad with being stuck being bitch slapped for heck knows how many loops at one point but ultimately gets to a point where how much do you dwell on that sticking point without it detracting from the story you want to tell...

...I kinda felt they played with the idea of doing more of the playing along with an evil scheme to take over the multiverse for nefarious reasons first but then ended up slashing most of it and used the Sif bit as part of the shortcut to all of that for pacing reasons and why there were still some pacing issues in season one (which I still loved dispite such flaws) having had to slim down the transition aspect...

...I can forgive shortcuts over fluff episodes if I can see why it was needed and kinda had to fast track him to at least the point he was as a character in Infinity War.

bkmeijer1 - 6/6/2024, 11:49 AM
@MarkCassidy - to be fair, he did spent centuries in the time loop before he fixed it. Probably gave him a ton of time to think about the alternative
Goldboink
Goldboink - 6/6/2024, 3:55 PM
@Apophis71 -
He made that turn over the course of the infinity saga and in Ep1 saw the film of his life and saw that turn. It did take him, what, like 4 episodes to make what we are calling the heroic turn but they were dense. Seeing the infinity stones no longer work was also a big thing for him. He was brought low for the first time, really and rendered utterly powerless.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/6/2024, 4:24 PM
@Goldboink - Yup, think on ballance they did it well enough, he was deffo starting out JUST playing along with working for the TVA so not like he was a hero at all for the first half even after watching what the course of his life would have been till his death in infinity war.

In original mythology Loki was never realy evil, just didn't stick to rules and societal norms, but oft did things for the greater good but in a trickster type way that would then backfire like the whole Giant bit that resulted in him turning into a female horse to distract his stallion when his plan was going to backfire.

The comic version feel works best in shades of grey, sure he will tend towards looking out for his own self interest above all else but someone like that can work on either side of good/bad depending on which serves his interest best.
Goldboink
Goldboink - 6/6/2024, 5:52 PM
@Apophis71 - Mythological Loki was not evil, in a traditional sense but the folks who put those words to parchment or whatever recognized Mischief as a human trait that needed a godly explanation. Even the first iteration of Loki he wasn't evil, just confused and rightfully pissed at the whole thing. Why the Marvel baddies tend to be deeper.

Anyway he will certainly play a role in the conclusion of this whole saga. Can't wait to see it.

@MarkCassidy - Idk man. They sold me with a couple of points. Him seeing his future. Him realizing the stones are powerless. And Mobius constantly belittling him for being a typical cliche "Loki". A lot of what made Loki what he was instantly got squashed and humbled at the TVA.

Bucky should still be Winter Soldier.

@grouch - Plenty of good examples but Bucky is a poor one to go with cos Bucky as a person was never a villain and started out as a WWII hero, he just did villainous thing whilst mind controlled so is as much of an example as Hawkeye would be under the control of Loki in the first Avengers films. Bucky was only a villain in the comics for a short time too before bein freed from the mind control and eventualy taking over as Captain America for a while.

Man , it’s been such a great arc for the character even if we have had technically 2 versions as our leads lol.

One of , if not the best journey in the MCU so far!!.

He truly did become burdened with glorious purpose , just not the way he intended.

Hiddleston has been great throughout and it’s wonderful to see him so invested in the character till this day , it’s gonna be a sad day when he truly hangs up the horns.

I can see him making one final appearance in Secret Wars where perhaps Kang uses him as a way to conquer the timeline (akin to Doom & Molecule Man in the comic).
