THE BOYS And THE MANDALORIAN Star Giancarlo Esposito Reveals Why He Turned Down LOKI Role

The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito has revealed that he turned down a role in Loki, saying he's holding out for a character he can bring to life on the big screen. Could that be Professor X, perhaps?

Giancarlo Esposito has quickly become one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood, which is no great shock after his work in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. While the actor has been largely wasted in The Boys, the hope is that he will find a major comic book role in the Marvel or DC Universes (perhaps both) in the not-too-distant future.

However, while we know Esposito has previously met with Marvel Studios, the actor revealed this weekend that he actually turned down a role in Loki

While he didn't elaborate on which character he was offered the chance to play, the actor reportedly told those in attendance (according to a Twitter user who was on hand) that he passed on the TV role because he was holding out for a movie character. That likely takes He Who Remains/Kang the Conqueror off the table, so who's left?

Well, Mobius is a strong possibility, as is a Loki Variant. For example, we could quite easily picture Esposito playing the Classic Loki eventually brought to life by Richard E. Grant, though it's not outside the realm of possibility that the actor was eyed for a character who didn't make it into the series!

Doctor Doom and Professor X are among those who Esposito has expressed an interest in playing, of course, and he'd later go on to share what he'd like to bring to the MCU's Charles Xavier.

"I'd play that character with force, grace, and a calm," he told fans. "Someone who controls the chaos, but someone who also has the ability to uplift and inspire." It's fair to say Esposito has a perfect grasp on what's needed to bring the leader of the X-Men to life on screen, but whether he'll be given that opportunity remains to be seen.

Who do you think the Breaking Bad star could play in the MCU?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was He Who Remains. Don't put it beside Marvel to just hand him the script for HWR, without spilling the beans too much where the character (or variant) is gonna appear next. Loki S2 being the most obvious place

I'm really not a fan of Marvel casting incredible actors in insignificant one-off roles.

Even if the actor doesn't want to do multiple projects, at least give them something to work with, a meaty role, not just something to move the story along.

What was he supposed to play in Loki? I doubt it's Kang. Boastful Loki? Classic Loki? Richard E. Grant was good in that role, but it wasn't noteworthy enough for an actor like him. I'm glad Giancarlo passed on it, and I hope he gets something better.

The role wasn’t up to Pollos standards

I wouldn't mind him as doom or some form of a cosmic elder, he's got talent for sure. But enough with the professor x things... even if he were to be considered I think him shooting off about it all the time (or people reporting on it all the time) is having the opposite effect he's hoping for.

@UnderBelly - I could see him as being an older ancient mutant. Maybe if they ever decided to adapt The Externals he could be one of those characters.

I wouldn't mind seeing him as Professor X...but te character is almost as much a villain as Magneto. He could stop the conflict at any time but allows his own people to die because he wants humanity to figure it out on their own...he says he doesn't want to take away their free will but will arbitrarily break that rule for selfish reasons, or when someone calls him out on his hypocrisy.

@Canon108 - this is exactly why he would be perfect for the role. I feel like he can capture the good and evil of professor x that we really haven’t seen done really well even though Patrick Stewart is iconic in the role but I would love to see them do a more villainous take on the character.

I’m betting it was Classic Loki. However, I would love to see him in the MCU and I think he would make a great Professor X.

Well it’s a no brainer for him to choose a role of an iconic character that will be in the films over any character from the Loki series. I hope he gets to be professor X as he seems like the type who would do well as Charles Xavier.
