Isaiah Mustafa Wants to Play Luke Cage in a Live-Action Movie

In a recent interview, Isaiah Mustafa announced that he would like to play Luke Cage!

You may not know the name Isaiah Mustafa but you know his face. He is "the man on the horse" in the quirky Old Spice commercials. Mustafa stopped by G4 Thursday to talk about the making of his new OS commercial, which is a pretty cool step by step walk through.

However, when he finished discussing the commercials Kevin Pereira asked him about his personal plans beyond Old Spice.

Here is his response and where it gets interesting to CBM fans...

"Well I'm starting on a movie Monday that's called Free Enterprise 2. It's a sequel to the cult classic Free Enterprise about comic books. I'm a comic junkie myself."

"I will say this...please, get this thing going. I want to be Luke Cage, OK ! I want to be Luke Cage! You have no idea, I mean really, yes. I made a dream board of it and put my face on the comic. I said I want to be Luke Cage one day."

Do you think he looks the part or can handle the character of Luke Cage? With all the buzz surrounding a possible Luke Cage film or TV show with or without Iron Fist, maybe we should pay more attention to this kind of statement than we normally would.

He starts talking Cage around the 7:00 mark.

What? Nothing against the guy, but if anybody from an old spice commercial is going to be Luke Cage, its Terry Crews. Second option, Bruce Campbell.

Seriously though, Terry Crews.

I would go with Mekhi Phifer :

He's in the fox show "Lie To Me", starring Emil Blonsky.

Terry Crews is by far the best choice for Cage. I just don't think there's enough fan following to make it successful. Luke Cage is D-list at best.

Terry Crews, nuff said.

I like Crews for the part myself, I think he's more than perfect for it. Mustafa sure gets hyper when talking about Cage though.

@CBArtist - Yeah, but Luke Cage is gonna be cheap to make. It doesn't need the budget of Iron Man. It might also actually help it that its closer to a straight action movie, but that's just conjecture.

Terry Crews gets my vote!

CBArtist & Mass- Sadly, as a comic book fan, i would love to get a Luke Cage movie but statistically speaking, Luke Cage alone doesn't cut the cheese. They should make a heroes for hire movie. Seriously though, nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong. But until that happens, i just don't see Luke Cage getting much praise without Iron Fist.

@Shaman - Oh, Luke Cage can cut the cheese. Dude, like I said, its basically just gonna be a simple urban action movie. Relatively cheap to make and market. It doesn't need to break box office records. Really, its a pretty safe property, I'd say. Almost easy money.

mustafa is great in old spice but crews is way more powerman
marz66
marz66 - 7/2/2010, 7:22 AM
Yeah I agree with zeonsdemon. CREWS should be powerman, but DAMN,can Marvel FINALLY give tha brutha a descent UNIFORM or SOMETHING?!!!sheesh. With all the talent they have over there, you'd think BY NOW they would give cage something good and proper.
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 7/2/2010, 7:30 AM
@marz66 - What?!? No love for the original! I freaking love that one. A man is nothing without his chain belt!

Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 7/2/2010, 7:31 AM
MassExecutions: I think your right on the money with your assesment. If Marvel produces a quality movie with Luke Cage I think it will rake in the profits.

marz66: You will never see Cage in a uniform. The closest he has come to one would be his original blue tights with yellow get up. He has said many times in the comics that he doesn't like costumes. He also is Hellbent on doing things in his own manner, he doesn't like going with the grain.

I think Crews is too old. Plus, I have never seen him act seriously or play the lead in anything. Give Isaiah a screen test!

marz66 - 7/2/2010, 7:33 AM
@MassEx-DAMMIT.it's not TRUE!!SAY IT'S NOT TRUE!lol..yeah I know,but the whole urban thug look..is soooo TIRED.sheesh. Ok,fine,then put the brutha in something snazzy,yet practical.lol
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 7/2/2010, 7:35 AM
Thanks but no thanks.

Crews would be ideal if he wasn't so old. He's like 45. So in that case, Henry Simmons, for realz.
Nemesys
Nemesys - 7/2/2010, 7:35 AM
My vote goes to Nick Jones:

He's an unknown who looks the part, and may also be playing John Stewart in Green Lantern (rumored). He's definitely playing a Marine in the flick.

He's young enough, muscular enough, and if he has the acting chops, why not?
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 7/2/2010, 7:36 AM
All I'm saying is "Chain Belt". Must have.

Great find HAWKS! :)

There are several actors that I'd like to see play Luke Cage but I'd be more than happy to give this guy a chance - he has the right look, build and voice for Luke Cage so give him an audition Marvel Studios! :D
Nemesys
Nemesys - 7/2/2010, 7:41 AM
@MassExecutions - Agreed
marz66
marz66 - 7/2/2010, 7:41 AM
@InTylerwetrust-Dude.Black don't crack.age ain't nothing but a number.lol.Seriously,tho,I see you're point.Yeah,brutha may be a bit LOOONG in the tooth.
@Nemesys-hmmmm..it's possible, but he looks I don't know..too NICE.Non threatening. I figure cage, upon first look,he would give the impression that he'd kick your butt JUST CAUSE HE COULD,you know? Even though the character is noble and good..you just know NOT to F' with him. This guy looks too nice.lol.

I think a Luke Cage Movie with Crews and Fight Choreography similar to the Rundown except with a guy who can lift 25 tons will be entertaining. I would do like a small budget version of The Avengers film. Start off with an Iron Fist movie and his origin which will be filled with awesome Kung Fu sequences and an Epic Battle Between Master Martial Artist and a DRAGON!!! Then you do a Luke Cage movie with his origin. I would incorporate prison and the military just to add a bit of that kind of always played on both sides of the law. Some more awesome fights and an epic fight with John Bushmaster(I can just see Cage doing a diving corkscrew into an 18 wheeler from the top a building).
Mid way through the film Cage decides to open up an Investigative agency and at the end when the plot is done after the credits hes filing some papers and Danny Rand walks in his office.

Danny Rand: "You Hiring some Heroes?"

Luke Cage: "No, I am the Hero for Hire"

Danny Rand: "How about *Heroes For Hire*?"
ROMACK
ROMACK - 7/2/2010, 7:49 AM
No I think we end up getting a Heroes for Hire TV series. On TV Crews has a fan following, and as far as his acting goes I know he can do "Pissed off" fine which is Cage's normal mood. =)

As far as age goes Simmons is in his forties as well.

I don't care how old Crew's is. When I see him on TV I think "That's Luke Cage".

@ThaMessenger07 - I like that "Rundown" comparison. Tombstone would be a good villain for the film.
Nemesys
Nemesys - 7/2/2010, 8:00 AM
@marz66 - Don't let the headshot fool ya, he's a Marine in real life too. And you know those jarheads normally have a few screws loose. I'm sure he could put a "badass" mug on his face and get the job done!

My vote goes to Ashton Kutcher.
