Melissa Rosenberg Briefly Updates AKA Jessica Jones

The pilot writer says AKA Jessica Jones is probably not fit for network television given its adult themes. There will obviously be changes from the source material but it will stay true to its dark roots....possibly on cable television.

ABC opted for Melissa Rosenberg to develop Red Widow over AKA Jessica Jones, which is premiering tonight on the network. While answering questions about the show, the conversations briefly turned to her efforts on a pilot for Luke Cage wife and former superhero, Jessica.

On whether AKA Jessica Jones is truly dead?
"I would love it. I love that series [the Marvel Comic Alias], I love the pilot I write for it… but its home is not on ABC, but we’re certainly searching for another home for it."

On if Rosenberg thinks the subject matter of AKA Jessica Jones has too many adult themes for network television?
"I think it is. Jessica Jones was one of the first very adult comic books that Marvel ever did, so I would not want to tone that down any."

Off the top of my head that definitely rings true. Published by Marvel Comics under Marvel's MAX imprint, the Brian Michael Bendis series (Alias) ran for 28 issues and dealt with rape, superhero one night stands and that's just some of the lighter subject matter. One of the more recent characters that actually managed to stick, Jones has an interesting and complex past that I was interested in seeing play out in a visual medium. No shit. With so many other interesting books and stories she chooses one that comic book fans barely know, and no one really cares about.

Arrow got made cuz he's Robin Hood, Smallville cuz he was the most well known superhero, and the Hulk is based on Jekyll and Hyde with the transformation being the hook.

I'd rather watch a real cop drama or a comedy.
