Mike Colter chats to IGN about where we'll find Luke Cage when we first meet him in Jessica Jones. It sounds like Cage's chequered past and the secrets he's carrying will stay hidden until the character makes the jump to his solo show, but there might be a few hints and teases here and there. The actor also talks about Cage's relationship with Jones and what brings them together, the difference in tone between all of the Netflix shows, and finally how he feels about eventually suiting up with the other heroes for The Defenders.

Luke Cage will be the third of Marvel and Netflix's series as we head towards The Defenders, and its set to première sometime next year.

it really bothers me that Mack from Agents of Shield is more Luke Cage material than Colter

But whatever, i'll get over it and I'm sure Colter will kick ass.

Acting over all else.

This is gonna be great then...

@Scorpo: He isn't a bad actor at all from what I have seen. Not saying that Colter sucks, he is just awesome. But so is Henry Simmons.

One problem with Henry Simmons is his age. He is [frick]ing 45!! Colter has got age on his side though.

@BabyGroot Colter is a waaaaaaaaay better actor. Besides the physical traits, Mack has nothing else that qualifies him. Acting is the most important.

Damn Henry Simmons is 45! Colter is 39! These guys look like they're in their early 30s!

He was pretty intense in the trailer.

I've never seen him in anything before but I'm now convinced he could carry his own series.

Mack from SHIELD is 'alright'.

@GliderMan I think it will look into the CRIME ELEMENT a little more personally. Cottonmouth may be a guy who's flooding Harlem with drugs and crime. More personal than DD because Luke is a real "man of the community." He's someone who knows the people personally and intimately from his past. It can also delve into the plight of ethnic neighborhoods. Marvel has a chance to delve into some DEEP territory.

Where Daredevil was The Wire on just a criminality level; displaying the corrupt cops and drug trade in a procedural method. Luke Cage is The Wire in terms of focusing on how a community is broken down by crime; the people, the infrastructure. How institutional dysfunctions are... dysfunctional in some way, and the characters are typically betrayed by the institutions that they accept because they're infiltrated by crime. An examination of the drug problem and its effect on the urban poor, examines the plight of the blue-collar urban working class. I think this show is just more subjective and community centered.

Luke Cage is truly the FACE OF HIS COMMUNITY & PEOPLE. Daredevil cares about Hell's Kitchen and rides and dies for his neighborhood too, but Luke knows everyone in Harlem. His relationship more personal because he doesn't hide behind a mask. He makes it a priority to walk the streets and conmect with the youth.

@KurtWagner1225 He obviously doesn't bash them but his character does as, you can tell already, he's very radical, anti-established Edward Snowden type

I really hope we get some Iron Fist news.

I've been reading The Immortal Iron Fist and honestly, I've no idea how they can do the character justice on a Netflix/TV budget. I don't want a watered down Iron Fist without the mysticism.

I read a rumour on the MCU Facebook page saying that Marvel are considering replacing the Iron Fist Netflix show with a Punisher one because they can't seem to get it right.

Some people have been saying Mike Colter looks "too soft" to be Cage, which sounds ridiculous considering the dude's massive, but I completely understand it. It's his face. He's got a teddy bear quality (not unlike Terry Crews), which I believe is a big part of why they chose him. Luke Cage is the epitome of the "angry black man" archetype, and Marvel/Netflix probably had a genuine concern that audiences might be scared off by a Cage that doesn't have a bit of a cuddly quality. (Introducing him first in Jessica Jones helps, too.) Borderline racist, yes, but you know it was on their minds during casting, just like they couldn't cast a Jessica Jones that was too plain-looking, even though that's an aspect of her character.
