Showrunner Cheo Coker Says It Was LUKE CAGE That Delayed Marvel's IRON FIST

Due to a previously unspecified delay, fans were worried that Marvel's Iron Fist might never get made! Now, Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Coker has revealed the reason for the schedule shift....

When Marvel originally announced their lineup of Netflix-exclusive shows, fans were amazed to hear that we'd be getting small screen adaptations of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. While news and production dates for the first three shows were revealed rather quickly, Iron Fist was kept in the dark, leaving many to wonder if the show was still going to be produced. Fortunately, it was later confirmed that the show was still happening, and that Finn Jones would star as the titular hero in 2017. As it turns out, this wasn't always supposed to be the case.

According to Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Coker, Iron Fist was originally supposed to debut before Luke Cage, but the positive reception to the character in Jessica Jones prompted Marvel to rethink their strategy. “Marvel went from, ‘We’re gonna take our time’ to ‘Let’s flip it and do Luke Cage first,’” Coker said in an interview with Complex. “‘We’ve got this great concept and this guy is leaping off the screen, let’s follow the momentum.’”

On a surface level, this may have been the right call, seeing as the idea of a man using martial arts to protect his city is very similar to Daredevil, however different the characters may be. As it turns out, Luke Cage actor Mike Colter was a little more than surprised about the change. “I called Mike and he’s freaking out: ‘We’re having a baby, my wife’s going to leave me!’ I had to calm him down,” Coker laughed.

Would you have preferred to see Iron Fist debut before Luke Cage, or are you happy with how things worked out? Sound off below!

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city – forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

This probably works better than having Iron Fist first.

@Valdez - Agreed. Each show has had a different flavour so far, Iron Fist may have come a tad too close to Daredevil, even though it delves a little more into the mystical side of things. Iron Fist will now have the luxury of being last and swinging back around to tie in with Daredevil's elements from seasons 1 and 2 (Madame Gao and the like).

@MattBellissimo - And I also feel like Iron Fist is a bit too weird to introduce first, but by introducing Luke Cage, Kilgrave, Jessica Jones, and the Hand first, they've introduced more superpowers and unrealistic parts to the Netflix universe.

@MattBellissimo - but i do like the idea of bringing iron fist later on, he has no ties to anyone so far, so i would like to see how they fit all of them together, because they all seem too distant from each other.

@Valdez - I agree. Having been introduced to him through Jessica Jones it made more sense to go to his show next and lay seeds for Danny to come. Plus the whole mystical aspect would probably play better after Doctor Strange when the general audience can get behind that side of the MU especially with Ghost Rider on AOS also tapping into that in a more drawn out format.

It honestly doesn't make a difference. What matters is if it's good.
But...this also means more time to develop Iron Fist, which was probably the real reason.
Luke Cage show looks decent, but so far Mike Colter has been a little boring and flat on his delivery. Plus, he's not that physically impressive. I hope the show proves me wrong.

@TheSanitizer - to most people that lift, train or even have an interest in fitness, he isn't that physically impressive but to everyone else he looks more than good enough.

Good call on debuting "Cage" before "Iron Fist." Looking forward to the latter too but I've been eagerly waiting for a live-action "Cage" show or movie for years. I know a lot of fans are still uncertain about Colter portraying Luke but I think he'll be fine. Like what I see from the trailers so far. Some "Daredevil" fans didn't like Cox being cast when it was announced but he turned out okay.
