Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker Originally Planned To Have Prince Appear On LUKE CAGE

The music featured in Marvel and Netflix's Luke Cage was one of the show's many highlights, and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker attempted to use an important prop to attract Prince to the show...

One of the smaller running jokes in Netflix and Marvel's Luke Cage was Pop's Swear Jar. The jar's purpose in the show seemed pretty simple; a small coffee canister, being used to collect dollar bills from anyone who used foul language in Pop's Barbershop, all while symbolizing Pop's status as the moral centre of a crime-filled Harlem.

As it turns out, showrunner Cheo Coker had a greater plan for the jar outside of the show's narrative, as he wanted to use it as a means to attract legendary musician, Prince, for the show's final episode.  "The "Swear Jar" was for Prince. I was going to show him the first two episodes and convince him to play in episode 13," Coker revealed on his Twitter page.

Prince, who was a devout Jehovah's witness, was known for keeping a swear jar of his own at his home in Paisley Park, Minnesota. Sadly, as we all know, Prince passed away in his home on April 21, 2016 before Coker was able to schedule a talk. Coker didn't reveal what kind of role he had in mind for Prince, but given the show's repetoire, it's likely he may have been another musical guest at Harlem's Paradise.

Luke Cage is currently streaming on Netflix.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Oh, I watched the first episode of that. Didn't realize Colter was on it. Poor SMG. I liked The Crazy Ones too, but it didn't get enough viewership. TV is a tough game.
