THE MARVELS Star Iman Vellani Shares MARVEL ZOMBIES Update And Confirms Ms. Marvel Is The Show's Lead

Marvel Zombies was one of several animated TV shows announced by Marvel Studios at last year's San Diego Comic-Con, but we haven't received any additional details since. The What If...? spin-off is still happening, though, and Iman Vellani recently shared an update on the project.

Talking to The Direct, The Marvels star confirmed she's already recorded her lines as this post-apocalyptic Variant of the mutant.

"We’ve done the whole thing. It was amazing. It was so much fun," Vellani confirms. "And I love...there are a lot of cool characters in the 'Marvel Zombies' show. And Kamala is kind of the center of the show. They described it to me, it's like, 'She's basically the Frodo of the story.' And I was like, 'That's amazing.'"

Artwork shown off last year depicted Ms. Marvel alongside Shang-Chi, Jimmy Woo, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Yelena Belova, Death Dealer, Red Guardian, and Katy. We also saw zombified Variants of Ikaris, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Abomination, Captain America, Hawkeye (Clint Barton), and Ghost.

Needless to say, Vellani is excited about sharing the screen with so many of the MCU's heavy hitters.

"I get to interact and meet all these people along her journey. And, yes, they're only the voices, and I don't get to hear their voices in real time. But just, it's my fantasies, right? Like, knowing Kamala is going to interact with some really cool people, even if it's just animation, is so special in a lot of ways."

The animated series reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge.

However, instead of continuing the story that ended in "What If... Zombies?!", Marvel Zombies is believed to be showing the same events from that episode, albeit from the perspective of a new group of survivors (what that means for the big Thanos cliffhanger remains to be seen).

In the comic books, Marvel Zombies started as a five-issue limited series first published in 2005. The series was written by Robert Kirkman (who would later create The Walking Dead) with art by Sean Phillips and covers by Arthur Suydam.

The story was set in an alternate universe where the world's superhero population has been infected with a virus which turned them into zombies. The series was spun out of a story arc in the pages of Ultimate Fantastic Four, where the zombie Reed Richards tricked his Ultimate counterpart into opening a portal to the zombie universe only for the latter to prevent the former from ever coming to his universe.

Marvel Zombies doesn't have a confirmed premiere date.

Damn my interest in the show just went down now. Thought Spider-Man was gonna be the lead based on that episode of What If. What a downgrade.

@Urubrodi - They are really intent on shoving her down our throats arent they? I have no interest in her, but the first season seemed like it jumped around a lot and I did not feel like there was a lead. If it is like that again, I will probably watch.

@Urubrodi - I was never a fan of the character, but as much as I hate the character, this actress has elevated the character beyond what I thought could happen, in fact she's more likable than Captain Marvel herself.

@Urubrodi - Spider-Man would have been great, maybe have him get help from some of the supernatural characters of the MCU.

Doctor Strange
Werewolf By Night
Man-Thing
Ghost Rider

@Blastaar - That I can agree with, but to me she is serviceable as a secondary character not as lead material.

@marvel72 - That's the sort of logical thing you'd expect them to do but Marvel doesn't like money anymore.
Blastaar
Blastaar - 12/1/2023, 11:32 AM
@Urubrodi - Well, what I think is bound to happen is that she'll be sort of a "Spider-Man"-ish sort of character in terms of her place among the other heroes. Comedy, Fangirling and stuff like that.

We are in no lack of Spider-Man material, I'm willing to give the character a chance since the actress is doing well with her, better than expected

@Urubrodi - Didn't the end of the episode allude to the death of Spider-Man and his team the moment Zombie Thanos appeared with the gauntlet?
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 12/1/2023, 2:41 PM
@SonOfAGif - Only watched it once but that was the impression I got too and if this is a prequel to that the story would make little sense being Peter Parker centric as too limiting to have to arrive at the point that episode started. Ms. Marvel is probably the closest thing out there other, current comics or adaption, than Miles obviously of a Spider-man like character to use to have a similar dynamic to that prior episode in a story set in that corner of the multiverse.

If it will be good or not and work as well or not remains to be seen.

@DocSpock - Actually she hasn't sank any ships at all. She actually was the best part of The Marvels, and her show was pretty good even though I think we all thought it would be trash. It turned out to be a lot better than expected.

@DocSpock - is not agreeing with everything. Many years ago this was a fun forum with lots of nerd fights, dc vs marvel, and gusto and mcgee were hilarious. Today half the comments are hateful comments because in the rabbit hole internet, red hat wearing people hate everything Disney.
supermanrex
supermanrex - 12/1/2023, 1:31 PM
@DocSpock - no one has to agree by no means. it has been a bit excessive on negativity though. like cartoonish negativity that these fools parody themselves every time they blast out edgy ignorant comments. the disagreements come from a steep dark hole of ignorance and hate and not of constructive thoughts and overall joy of the medium. its like these fools hate all nerd shit. which begs the question why come to a site that reports on nerd news especially if you hate everything being produced.

@LeDiableBlanc -

I have been here since those early days with my pals McGee & Gusto.

Since you say half the comments are hateful, I guess that’s the half you don’t like. You also obviously don’t like conservatives.

Sounds like your gripes are with people you don’t agree with. Sounds like the whiner is you.

You make a good point.
Blastaar
Blastaar - 12/1/2023, 3:42 PM
@DocSpock - Well, you have your right to your opinion, yes thank goodness we are not like a hivemind. People get to like or dislike things, and that's a great thing. But at the same time, I think some opinions need to stand or MERIT, some opinions go beyond a matter of taste, not just an opinion based off dislikes because its cool to do so or because of unwarranted/inherent biases.

Example, I don't like chocolate cake(for real) but I like hot chocolate and certain things that have "some" chocolate in them. Does that make me a bigoted, chocolate hater?(LOL). No, I just don't like the taste of a whole lot of chocolate(unless its a woman, LOL!).

I didn't like Ms.Marvel in the comics. Why? Because, because besides being Muslim(which IS cool) I thought she was corny and her power set was whack asf. I DO however like Ms.Marvel/Kamala Khan in the MCU...Why? Because the actress is talented, funny, and has made the character likable, has a better power set, and opens possibilities for mutants and X-Men.

Maybe if we did a poll on here, that may or may not show what the true consensus feels about her.
From personal experience(of course I don't literally know everyone), most people that I know, agree that she was the highlight of The Marvels and that she was good in Ms.Marvel.

Blastaar
Blastaar - 12/1/2023, 8:05 PM
@DocSpock - Well.....She's similar to Spider-Man in a lot of ways, personality wise. So I kind of get why they are pushing in that space. Not to replace Spider-Man, but I could DEFINITELY imagine the two hanging out with each other.

@supermanrex - Most people haven't got a problem with the actress, it's the character.
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 12/1/2023, 11:13 AM
@supermanrex - I could care less if she gets popular. The lack of success of her show and The Marvels, not to mention the comic book, would say otherwise though. She may have a following, but it is hard huge. Thats what makes it feel like she is being forced on the audience. Maybe we will all learn to love her like an arranged marriage.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 12/1/2023, 1:24 PM
@Shivermetimbers - Or, and hear me out here, the new generation is reading more diital comics than physical ones and the company knows which characters the kids of the last ten years have been reading most online and trying to get them hooked on a wider range of their products by placing those characters in them for long term financial reasons?

Ticket sales for instance likely heavily slanted more to what an older skew pay to see and take their family to than what an actual teen is into and will be potentialy buying into/taking their family to in decades to come.

I mean us old farts hanging onto characters created in the 60's through 80's aren't going to be around forever. The oolden age hero's aren't likely to be going anywhere and new characters can help make the new kids on the block think past the those are out dated and become fans of the classics too.

I get the narrative of pushing agendas that is the popular hate train of the moment but ultimately Disney like any other big company will primarily base decisions on making money with a long term plan to grow based on all the data they have at their disposal not all of which we may be privy to. A push against those financial forecasts and what underlying numbers say will only ever be short lived.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 12/2/2023, 5:22 AM
@supermanrex - I wasn't trying to trash it, I only said I'm not interested. I hope it ends up being great for the fans.

Dammit man. WTF?!?

... NO, REALLY. WTF???

Has feminism become more important than money? Have we come to a time where the simple joys of heterosexual men become unattainable?

Take this girly shit- to the girly section!!!

We could have the MARVEL Zombies go panel for panel with the original 5 books. That 💩 could rival The Walking Dead!!!

Instead, we get another fully committed to flopping, sack of shit storytelling, with the "flexcuse" of inclusion!!!

Shut the shit down 👇🏽 👇🏽. At this point, I'm ready to help fund the Rippaverse, hoping I never have to see this level of nonsense again...

@KennKathleen - "Has feminism become more important than money?"

A few years ago, one of the writers at Marvel comics (or maybe DC) said that they're more interested in sending a political message to people than making $$$.
