More From Drew Pearce On Why THE AVENGERS Put THE RUNAWAYS On Hold

Iron Man 3 and Godzilla screenwriter Drew Pearce shares his thoughts on how The Avengers resulted in The Runaways being put to one side, but speculates that it could be part of "Phase 3". Shane Black however thinks other wise! Hit the jump to check it out.

"We were really close to being made, and then this movie started to happen called The Avengers," screenwriter Drew Pearce explained in a Q&A podcast with Jeff Goldsmith (via The Hollywood Reporter) when asked why we've heard nothing about The Runaways movie recently. "Oddly, it pulled focus from the unheard-of brand Runaways, and it really did kind of consume the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's there, maybe it'll be a Phase Three movie, I really hope so, I'm really proud of it and I think it'll be a brilliant film, but I think it all depends what Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, what his master plan is." Pearce's Iron Man 3 screenplay was universally praised, while he has since been hired to work on the fifth Mission Impossible movie. It's not hard to believe that his take on the Brian K. Vaughan created characters would have been something very special indeed! Shane Black said that it's, "one of the better screenplays that's sitting on a shelf somewhere," but warned that it probably WON'T be in "Phase 3". "They make two [movies] a year, but that's still at least three years down the line [until they run out of films already in progress]." What do you guys think? Sound off below!

Did anybody give a shit about Iron Man before his film? Did any body give a shit about Thor before his film?

Majority would say no.

Runaways are really cool, but I prefer a TV series even though I really want it to have the blockbuster feel.

Cool. I hope it is, really liked the comic.

One nitpick though Josh...

"....universally praised...."

IM3 was positively reviewed, but not universally acclaimed.

Runaways is my all time favourite comic.
It's a great concept with humour, diversity and is completely fresh.
I loved it, it really spoke to me with it's awesome characters.

It needs to be made in a movie, it's like The Breakfast Club with superpowers.

It needs to be a MOVIE, it'll require a lot of special effects what with a dinosaur AND Karolina and her parents' alien forms and I don't think a budget of a TV show can do it justice.

Teenagers are a big audience of cinema-goers.
They should capitalise on that.

I think they're probably worried about issues of homosexuality, self harming and child abuse.
And Marvel are quite conservative with regards to their films.
So I think that also sets the project back.

The reason he said that "universally praised" shit is because he's always looking to try and start a flame war in his articles.

You obviously haven't read the series.
Don't judge.

Runaways the comic series is far and away more deserving of an adaptation than anything Antman has EVER done.

That said, it probably is a tough sell at the moment: the premise requires a Marvel universe somewhat more cluttered with superheroes and supervillains than Avengers depicted...

Runaways would be a great one shot film or better yet a tv show...... Who's asking Shane black these questions like he has something to do with the future of marvel movies? That's like asking joe Johnson or Kenneth Branagh(however u spell it) what does marvel have planned next?
MrCBM56
MrCBM56 - 9/24/2013, 4:04 PM
BlackJack and <><>

You say that now because you've seen how popular Iron Man is and have become but you haven't seen anything regarding the Runaways. And I'll say it again and this time answer the question, before Thor and Iron Man came out, did you honestly give a [frick] about those two characters? Be honest, because majority would say no. Hell, before Avengers came out people were saying how it wasn't going to work and it's impossible to do, look at it now. If you know anything about The Runaways, you would know that a movie with them has potential to be great. And the movie, if and or when the movie comes out, won't be made for you but the fans...including myself.

The fact that a movie was so close to being made (they even began preliminary casting decisions) for a comicbook that isn't universally known and that is pretty new as far as comic series go, says a lot about it's material and how loved it is.

So those hating on it already, actually read it and don't be so stuck up and get your heads out of something other than Iron Man or the Avengers.

@mecbm

Thor, Iron man, etc.... Had been extremely popular before the movies.
They was well known though cartoons, comics, toys, etc way before the movies, so yes they had fans just like x-men and Spiderman had fans before the movie.

I'm all for a Runaways film because I'm all for more comic book movies, especially ones that expand the superhero genre to different subgeneres of films (teen drama). Marvel should get to working on this!

@CherryBomb
Not to be a party pooper but "R.I.P.D." and "2 Guns" were based comics that weren't universally known and those got movies. Now them actually doing something new is obviously not the case with those films but just because a comic that isn't well known gets a movie made about it doesn't mean a whole lot anymore. But as I stated before my reply, I'm all for The Runaways.

Runaways is much better suited to a TV series than a movie. And anyone who doesn't see why it would be successful clearly hasn't read it, so why should we give a flop what you think?

Can a TV show pull of Karolina's alien form successfully every episode?
I'm not sure.
And the CGI dinosaurs don't look great to be honest.

I don't care about Runaways but I DO think Marvel should make FOUR (4) "sp=quatro" films a year. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Anything with Drew Pearce's name attached, No Thank You.

Unfortunately he's writing on Mission Impossible 5 so I'm gonna have to suffer another film with his name attached.

Hope it's got better writing than Iron Man 3!

No interest in a Runaways movie, but I wouldn't be against seeing it if it was made.

Funny how many people on this website don't know jack about comics. The Runaways is an awesome book, and I don't know any other Marvel title that has introduced more new readers to the Marvel Universe.

@MrSundayNight the runaways are a group of teenagers who stumble into a meeting there parents are having and find out they are a group of supervillains planning on destroying the whole world except themselves and there kids and that they are sacrificing people to these alien overlord things. They steal there parents Tech Toys that make them "super"villaians and run away with them. They eventually try to become superheroes. It is a great series and one of the films i most want to be made right up there with Locke and Key. If you haven't read "Locke and Key" you are just cheating yourself.

The Runaways are very cool. Definitely need a movie (and works perfectly with Ultron popping up in Avengers 2 since one of his "sons" is on the team).

They need a movie and somewhere in a few years, Young Avengers need theirs (after Avengers 3). Patriots lil back story connection to Cap would be nice to see on the big screen.
