SECRET INVASION And LOKI Season 2 Are The "Only Sure Bet" MCU Disney+ Shows To Premiere In 2023

We've heard conflicting reports about how many Marvel Studios shows are set to arrive on Disney+ this year, but it's now come to light that Secret Invasion and Loki season 2 are the only "sure bets."

During San Diego Comic-Con last July, Kevin Feige announced plans for at least five new MCU-based shows to premiere on Disney+ in 2023, but it's now looking like Marvel Studios may have been a little too ambitious.

Feige revealed that we'd be seeing fewer Marvel shows on the streaming service going forward during a recent interview, telling EW that "the pace at which we’re putting out the Disney+ shows will change,” and THR has now published a follow-up report.

According to the trade, Loki season two and Secret Invasion are the "only sure bets" to debut this year, with the likes of Echo, Ironheart, Agatha: Coven of Chaos and the second season of What If...? unlikely to arrive in 2023 "as the studio spreads out its content and tinkers in post-production."

The report also mentions that the Nova series is now "on a slower path."

This decision to put the brakes on a steady stream of content has been referred to as a "franchise recession," but given the overall mixed (and we're probably being kind there) reception to Phase 4, we'd say a quality over quantity approach can only be a wise move.

Marvel Studios' first Phase 5 feature, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, arrives in theaters this weekend, and reviews have not been kind. Maybe Feige should think about taking a similar approach to the studio's big-screen output?

What do you guys think? Are you disappointed that we'll most likely only see two new MCU series this year, or are you glad to hear that more time will be dedicated to making the other shows as good as possible?

Wait nova is going to be a series? Guess I was wrong about it being a move

@Taonrey - I hope it's a series. A movie or special presentation wouldn't do it justice in my opinion. They can go so many directions with that

@bkmeijer1 - Loki and andor definitely make me think a series could work.

Great news! Quality over quantity please.

Now let’s help they are quality.

You know I kinda get making Agatha a series because she was popular in Wandavision, but Echo doesn’t make any sense. Marvel went from not doing any tv shows, to trying to give everybody one. Spending 150m+ on 6 projects a year is always going to bite you.

@Taonrey -
They dropped huge piles of money on people and some of the ideas are just whacked. Unfortunately there are box checkers who were given projects that won't work out.

@Taonrey - I wonder how much was mandated by Disney to give Disney+ some original content?

@MILESSPIDERMAN - I am kinda excited for it too. Mostly for Ramos' The Hood though. That tech vs magic angle has me intrigued

@bkmeijer1 - yes its whar we wanted from the Iron man franchise right? Honestly it would have been cool to see Wen Wu vs. TONY

MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 2/16/2023, 11:23 AM
@Vigor - It was legitamitely upsetting that Wenwu died, and that's because he was such a well done and well acted character. Doesn't mean we can't see him again, but it'd have been nice if he could have lived.

bkmeijer1 - 2/16/2023, 11:29 AM
@Vigor - kind of yeah. But I liked the copout we got in Iron Man 3 too. I might be one of the few, but I really liked that Mandarin twist

Uh oh. Ant Man 3 is still dropping. Now at 51%. I don't know how much this impacts Box Office takes. It'll be interesting to see how well it performs.

Slowing down and reassessing seems like a good plan.

@mountainman - I bet a solid opening weekend and then a slow decline in box office expectations.

The critics have also been awaiting an opportunity to savage a CBM, especially a Marvel one. I just hope I'm entertained.
mountainman
mountainman - 2/16/2023, 11:12 AM
@Reginator - If my wife and I do go see it, which is undecided right now, it'll be at Alamo Drafthouse so I can have a couple beers and some food during the movie. Makes every movie more enjoyable.
mountainman
mountainman - 2/16/2023, 11:14 AM
@EZBeast - That's pretty standard. Ant Man did about $55 million and 2 did about $62 domestic opening weekend. This will beat that for sure.

But let's just see what the legs are like. BP2 underperformed the first by a good margin. If this movie doesn't out perform Ant Man 2's $622 worldwide, that will be a huge disappointment for Marvel.

@Goldboink - I don't doubt that is the case. I don't hold too much respect for RT scores. My enjoyment of a movie isn't in line with those scores. But up until recently, Marvel was almost critic proof. It's just an interesting development in my eyes.

We only go to Alamo. Comfort, drinks and they will kick your ass out if you misbehave.

Really expected What If and Ironheart to land this year as well. If not though, Phase 5 and 6 are gonna be even more crammed than they already are.

Counting the upcoming movies and shows' episodes, Marvel has enough content for 152 weeks (not including movie releases on Disney+ or Assembled episodes).
mountainman
mountainman - 2/16/2023, 11:17 AM
@bkmeijer1 - It really makes you wonder if they are going to continue with all these lesser known characters after they introduce the FF and X-Men. A lot of people have reported this recent stuff feels like filler to them. If something like Agatha or Echo comes out when higher profile projects are also coming out, I don't expect there will be many eyes on them. Most people are not watching every project any more. It's too much work.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/16/2023, 11:32 AM
@mountainman - yeah, it almost starts to feel like a full-time job to keep up with all the content.

Think if they do a movie, then a show, then a movie, then a show, etc., it is doable to keep up. Nothing is in each other's way either.

Speaking of X-Men, Marvel Studios is also doing the 97 revival. Would be a waste if that get's overshadowed or has to share the spotlight.

mountainman - 2/16/2023, 11:37 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I hope that isn’t delayed. I’m looking forward to X-Men 97 quite a bit!

bkmeijer1 - 2/16/2023, 11:40 AM
@mountainman - The article only mentions the live-action shows and What If so I'm hoping this year, even if it's original announcement put it in 2024.

@PlusUltra - The relief I felt when DC announced that Reeve's Batman would stay standalone was equal to the boredom I felt watching the DCU sleight be unveiled, despite the slate being everything I would've wanted five years ago.

I'm close to getting that jaded with the MCU as well.

@PlusUltra -

I have a feeling feige will do a separate universe soon. At the very least obscure characters get a standalone far from the marvel world like werewolf by night. Technically in the MCU but it's own thing.

It's like Gunns swamp thing. He said it's connected to the new Dcu but it's own thing
