SECRET INVASION Star [SPOILER] Breaks Down Skrull Twist And How Long Their Character Has Been An Imposter

Secret Invasion wasted no time in revealing that a fan-favourite character was a Skrull imposter, and the actor who plays them has shared their thoughts on that and how long they've been playing an alien.

Secret Invasion started off with a bang by revealing that Martin Freeman's former CIA Agent Everett Ross was, in fact, a Skrull imposter. We don't know how long that had been the case, but the alien who took on his form died after a run-in with Talos.

Ross is presumably among the humans being held captive in Gravik's compound, and in a recent interview with Collider, Freeman shared his thoughts on his character being outed as a shape-shifter.

He started by revealing whether the Ross we saw go rogue in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever may have been this same Skrull.

"No, we had a conversation about it. Put it this way, I wasn’t playing anything in 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' as a Skrull. I wasn’t thinking, 'I’m a Skrull,' 'Secret Invasion' and 'Wakanda Forever' were definitely overlapping, chronologically, but I was never given a full definitive party line."

"I don’t wanna play Ross as Skrull. I don’t wanna believe he’s been a Skrull this whole time, so I don’t. That’s not what I’ve played. I’ve believed, all the time, in Ross’s integrity, actually...I’ve enjoyed playing him as an organic human man, so I don’t wanna lose him to Skrulldom. So, no, Ross, for me, is not a Skrull."

It wouldn't actually make sense for Ross to have been a Skrull this whole time as his actions have been largely heroic in nature. Sure, you could argue that Gravik might have turned him, but then it would undermine what we learned about his history with Val in the Black Panther sequel.

Like Rhodey, it appears Ross was switched out prior to his last appearance and when Secret Invasion begins.

It's a shame that we haven't learned of any Skrulls who have been pulling the MCU's strings for years without us knowing, but the frantic nature of the Multiverse Saga appears to have had an impact on Marvel Studios' ability to plan that far ahead.

Are you hoping the real Everett Ross eventually makes his return?

@WhatIfRickJames - That doesn't work because Okoye freed him from custody and told him to come with her. Presumably back to Wakanda to evade authorities. So the fact he was arrested and fired in Wakanda Forever but somehow free and still working for the CIA in Secret Invasion doesn't make much sense. Unless Secret Invasion happened before Wakanda Forever timeline wise.

Having the established twist Skrull characters only have been skrulls since the last time we saw them is so incredibly [frick]ing lame and lazy. Don't do anything interesting with the characters actions from before no just a cheap twist. The original comic isn't even that good yet this is somehow worse

@Mrcool210 - Idk, I relate to the "I don’t wanna lose him to Skrulldom" sentiment. I would hate if a character I like was retconned into a skrull, making the previous character development pointless. That said, Sharon Carter should be a skrull, just erase it all she's done lol.

@Mrcool210 - more reason why they should've READ THE COMIC THIS STORY IS BASED ON! My f@#$ing God. Is it that hard to read the story to understand what the appeal is?

@Origame - The comic book story is unfilmabale for a TV show so why bother ? They appropriated the title and little else. Get over it.

@JDL - well it's the marvel CINEMATIC universe, so why should they adapt the story as specifically a TV show?

But at the same time, how do the writers know it's unfilmable if they don't read the dam thing? It shouldn't be too much to ask for, since the mcu set a standard for their adaptations of comic stories with winter soldier and civil war. Both of which very firmly are those stories but altered for the state of the mcu at the time. Why is it too much to ask they do that with secret invasion?

@Origame - Jesus. The comics version was i.m.p.o.s.s.i.b.l.e. to film. Trying to salvage anything would have taken three or four more writer's time and effort than just starting clean. So 1) it saves money, 2) it's faster.

@JDL - dude, care to explain?
JDL
JDL - 7/13/2023, 6:38 AM
@Origame - Feige et al were familiar with the comics and had already decided that most of that stuff was not what they wanted. So the writers were told to avoid it.
Origame

@JDL - then they shouldn't have made a secret invasion show.

Why is this so complicated?

@Origame - While I don't agree with that POV, I do understand it. I'm just more flexible on matters like this than you. The closest I can come to your take on this would be to insist that it be called something else.

@JDL - ...which is all I ask. Either try to follow the comics or call it something else.

Another terrific episode. The progression of this series is crazy. Gravik loves to hurt characters when they are defenseless. He loves the camera work in this series. He also loved the interactions between Nick Fury and Priscilla Fury, Nick Fury and Skrull Rhodey, and Talos and Gear. The assault on President Ritson was a great action scene. Gravik using the power of Flora Colossus to kill an American soldier was eerie and fantastic. Who Do You Trust?
