AVENGERS: ENDGAME And SHE-HULK Star Mark Ruffalo Opens Up On How It Feels To Still Be Part Of The MCU

Ed Norton played Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, but creative differences with Marvel Studios meant that the actor had parted ways with Kevin Feige and company by the time The Avengers rolled around in 2012. Mark Ruffalo was revealed as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new Jade Giant in 2010, and has played the character ever since.

During an interview with Variety, Ruffalo was asked about whether he ever pictured himself playing a character like The Hulk on the big screen, and he admitted that it wasn't something he saw coming.

"Never. We had this little theater and that was my dream come true," the actor said, reflecting on his career. "We were doing, like, 10 plays a year on Santa Monica Boulevard. I was bartending, but as shitty as the day could be, when I walked in the theater, I was in heaven. It’s when I met Sunrise [Ruffalo’s wife] and she was like, “I think you might be shooting a little bit low. I think you can probably expand what you think you’re capable of."

Asked if he ever pinches himself on the set of these Marvel Studios movies, Ruffalo acknowledged that he's all too aware that he "shouldn't even be there."

"Yeah. Every time I’m whining like, 'God damn, how long are we waiting for the set up?' I’m like, 'Hey, Remember you’re not even supposed to be here.' Right. I just remember to be grateful because I still can’t believe it. I still keep thinking, 'They’re going to throw me out of the club. I never belonged here in the first place and they’re all going to find out.'"

Ruffalo's journey in the MCU has been pretty incredible, and following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the Green Goliath is now expected to return as the character in Disney+ series, She-Hulk.

He's one of the good guys. Glad he wound up with Hulk/Banner. I can't see that other guy doing half as well.

And this is why Marvel chose Ruffalo to replace Norton. While Norton has great talent in acting/directing, he doesn't play well with others and sucks on his own ego.

Ruffalo on the other hand plays along and is just a really good dude. And I still like his performances as Banner, even though they goof him up Ragnarok and forward.

Really like him, not just as the Hulk, but also as an actor. It's always a joy to see him show up. And when he says ''I still can’t believe it'', he is not wrong since he acts like that way too.

Impostor syndrome. Crazy to think even huge celebrities deal with it.

I would like to see a better portrayal of the Hulk going forward. He was not used properly in Infinity War or Endgame.

I think if they ever do a dark, gritty reboot of Columbo, Ruffalo would be perfect.

Who cares about Dark and Gritty. Just give him OG Columbo to play with.

@Goldboink - Because it's a show about murder, and the standards and practices aren't as strict as they were in the 70s.

Than it’s not Colombo.

@Goldboink - The characterization can remain the same, but they can add darker elements to the series.

Dark doesn’t mean good and in fact is most often a substitute for good writing, subtle humor and compelling drama. I am dog tired of the impetus to make everything dark and brooding. That was my problem with the Netflix Marvel stuff. Shit writing and shit acting with plenty of blood and gore. There is certainly a place for it but there is no need to paint everything grey and have it be all grim.

Agreed, Norton was much better.

this is not meant as an insult, but i think it is perfect that mark has that natural cave-man, cro-magnum look about his face that when he turns into the hulk not only does he still look like himself, he actally is able to look like the hulk from the comics without having to stretch our imaginations.

I know people had issues with how Hulk was utilized in Infinity War and Endgame but I actually dug it. Showing different and new issues/sides to Bruce/Hulk was refreshing. Sure, there were some silly moments, but how about that moment where he gives Scott two tacos before heading on the ship.

Come on.

That put a smile on your face.
