SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW Head Writer Says The Show Features "A Lighter Side" Of Charlie Cox's Daredevil

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Head Writer Jessica Gao has talked more about bringing Charlie Cox's Daredevil into the series, suggesting we'll see the Man Without Fear's lighter side. Check it out...

After starring as Matt Murdock in three seasons of Daredevil and spinoff The Defenders for Netflix, Charlie Cox made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home last December.

Next up for the actor is She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo, with the latter expected to lead directly into 2024's Daredevil: Born Again. We'd bet on Marvel Studios taking the Man Without Fear down a suitably dark path in that Disney+ series, but it sounds like we'll get a very different take on the hero before then.

Talking to The Direct, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Head Writer Jessica Gao shed some light on how Daredevil will fit into this specific corner of the MCU.

"With every character cameo from the MCU, we take them from the environment that you know them from, which is a much more dramatic and action-oriented role, much more on the serious side, and we bring them into our world and they get to play in the tone of She-Hulk," she explains. "And they got to explore and we get to see a lighter side of that character."

Some fans will be horrified at the prospect of a lighter take on Daredevil, though we'd bet on them not having read the hero's earliest adventures by Stan Lee and Bill Everett or even Mark Waid and Chris Samnee's critically acclaimed run.

Gao would go on to share high praise for what Cox brought to the table. "Charlie is so wonderful. He’s so game to do whatever, and he’s such a wonderful actor, and a wonderful human being. What was so fun about bringing him and Daredevil into our world is that people have already seen a Daredevil who is very dramatic, little bit on the heavy side, very dark, brooding."

The fact that the actor is being given the opportunity to explore these different sides of Daredevil is incredibly exciting, and hopefully points to him having a future in the MCU beyond his upcoming series. He certainly deserves to be a major player in this world, and while Matt has met Peter Parker, a team-up with Spider-Man somewhere down the line is essential.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premieres on Disney+ on Thursday, August 18.

Bring it. Consider me (cautiously) optimistic.

Yea, if it's not the darkest Frank Miller stuff a lot of people will be ticked.

I predicted in another comment section after Hawkeye that Disney Plus/MCU would explore the superhero side of Daredevil and probably take inspiration from the Mark Waid run.

I wonder if he'll still have the yellow costume and be lighthearted in Echo (a street level show) and Daredevil: Born Again (named after his darkest story). Born Again was already adapted in Daredevil Season 3, so I'm curious how they'll handle it.

This shows tone reminds me of Ghostbusters 2016.

Yes, because the one complaint people had about the current phase of the mcu is that it's just too serious. Especially Thor 4. /s

@Origame - pEoPlE have been making the same complaint about Marvel since phase one.

"Daredevil's lighter side"

@IcePyke -
I'm fine with Disney Plus showing Daredevil's light-hearted superhero side, just as long as it feels like natural character development from the Netflix series, it's just as well-written and character focused, they don't skimp on the fight scenes, and it isn't peppered with lame jokes.

If anything, the most jarring difference will be that Kingpin is a Spider-Man level threat now.

Also, people forget that Marvel Zombies is TV-MA and Daredevil Season 4 is named after one of the darkest comics. So he'll probably only be light-hearted in specific stories/shows/episodes.

Edgelords complaining about him having a lighter side (or any hero for that matter) forget that these characters have been anything from super grimdark Bois to utter goofballs in their multi year history that is longer than your parents are together

@Blergh - Just stop. Anti-MCU sentiment is at an all time high for a good reason. It's not because of the comedic tone. It's because the jokes are crap. It's quantity over quality now and a lot of people (myself included) are choosing to skip movies and shows for the first time since Iron Man. Your whole thing about Daredevil's comic history doesn't make any sense. Fans of the Daredevil SHOW and fans of CHARLIE COX have been campaigning for HIS iteration of the character to be in the MCU. If they're just going to turn him into another comedian they should have just recast. I know you're probably so invested in the MCU that it hurts you personally when someone criticizes it, but it's okay not to eat up every piece of crap they serve. It's okay to be an advocate for quality over quantity. I'm reserving judgement because I haven't seen it yet, but based on these comments plus the trailers plus Marvel's track record for turning (relatively) serious characters into jokes, I don't have high hopes. All I know is that people who default to "Oh you don't like it? You must be an edgelord" are ruining Marvel.

@YouCray04 - it says directly in this article that he has a lighter tone here to fit she hulks world. He Hs a daredevil show and appears in the moody Echo show as well. You're just jumping on thr marvel hate bandwagon, and therefore failing to think critically
YouCray04
YouCray04 - 8/12/2022, 8:42 AM
@Vigor - Lmao I'm failing to think critically?? You're the one who has been brainwashed into thinking characters can only work alongside each other if they match each other's tone. That is the most stupid gen-z take on storytelling I've ever heard. If you genuinely think it was the right choice to take an existing and beloved character and change his personality to fit a different character's show you are lost.

@YouCray04 - here's an abridged comment I left for someone else

"...

Others are generally afraid that their beloved daredevil is going to be bastardized. But they fail to remember that Thor acted different in every movie he's been in. He was different in Thor 1 vs. Infinity war vs. Ragnarok. It's all the directors discretion and tone of the show. That's exactly what's occurring here.

Daredevil has his own revitalized show coming where he can be as brooding as he wants to be"

Do the MCU know it's OK for different people in a show to have different characteristics?
