WANDAVISION: Monica Rambeau Creator Roger Stern Has High Praise For MCU's Teyonah Parris (Exclusive)

Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. created Monica Rambeau in 1982, and when we recently caught up with the former to discuss The Heroes Union, he shared his thoughts on Teyonah Parris's take in the MCU...

Legendary comic book writer Roger Stern, the author of such classics as "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" and "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut!," is teaming with Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema for The Heroes Union #1. Released by Binge Books on August 4, the team was created by veteran TV writer Darin Henry (Futurama) and is tailored for audiences used to "bingeing" their favourite content.

You can read more about that here, but when we were recently presented with the opportunity to chat to Roger over email, we had to ask the beloved scribe what it's been like to see one of his many creations brought to life on screen.

While Monica Rambeau made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2019's Captain Marvel, it wasn't until WandaVision hit Disney+ that we met an adult version of the character. There, we saw her begin her transformation into a superhero, so what does Rambeau's co-creator (Monica first appeared in Stern and John Romita Jr.'s Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 in August 1982) think about the show?

"I did finally catch WandaVision—in fact, I binge-watched it over a couple of days—and I enjoyed it a great deal," Roger told us. "Teyonah Parris did a great job in portraying Monica. She displayed just the right mix of strength and compassion. I eagerly await whatever happens next."

That's high praise indeed, and it's great to see the talented Teyonah Parris get this seal of approval from the writer who first helped breathe life into a character who's now set to become a key player in the MCU. We'll next see her in The Marvels, and Roger is clearly as excited as us to see where Monica's story goes next on screen.

The Heroes Union #1 reunites Stern and Frenz, the creative team behind the iconic Amazing Spider-Man story, "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" and will be the first comic in over a decade to feature the official Comics Code Authority Seal. Each copy will also be uniquely numbered for collectors, with some of the numbered variants potentially opening the door to future, yet to be revealed, perks.

I feel like I’m the only one who didn’t care about her at all. She was… fine, but there wasn’t anything special about her.

I already like Monica in the show, but thanks to the Assembled episode I even like Parris even more in the role. Cool to see her getting a bigger role in The Marvels.
