WANDAVISION Star Josh Stamberg Talks Possible Return As Villainous Former S.W.O.R.D. Director Tyler Hayward

Josh Stamberg's Director Hayward was perhaps WandaVision's most despicable character, and the actor has now opened up on the possibility of one day reprising the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

WandaVision didn't have a big bad, but S.W.O.R.D. Director Tyler Hayward came pretty close. We didn't learn a lot about what led him down a dark path, but it seems likely that being among those who were left behind during the Blip made him hate superheroes (it could also explain why he was so desperate to reactive Vision in order to have a tool to "protect" the world).

Talking to Entertainment Tonight about the character, actor Josh Stamberg explained that it was important to both him and Marvel Studios to make sure Hayward wasn't a one-note bad guy.

"What can we do to keep him from just being mustache twirly?" he says of his approach to the role. "And I liked that, at least for an episode and a half, there got to be some quote-unquote charm or some likability before it sort of descends into this guy who’s so hungry to run the universe."

Hayward didn't die in WandaVision's series finale, and was instead taken into custody. We don't know who will replace him as S.W.O.R.D.'s Director (Monica Rambeau, Jimmy Woo, and Abigail Brand are among the most likely possibilities), but could there be a place for him in the MCU moving forward?

"I do pray as the creator of the White Vision that I’ll come back somehow," Stamberg teased. "I would not only be disappointed, but a little surprised if I didn’t show up somewhere."

With rumours swirling online that Vision will return in Armor Wars (which makes a lot of sense when you think about it), the door has to be open for Hayward to return in some way. Perhaps the synthezoid will seek out his "creator" for answers...or for revenge!

So he knows his MCU and how they operate and he acknowledges that his character was poorly written.

I like this guy, yeah bring him back.

I doubt his character will do time, so I suspect he’ll pop up again at some point in a government job. General Ross ended up as Secretary of State, after all, and he lead two major failed military attacks on public places himself.

@Chewtoy -Imagine Ross becomes a President and Hayward becomes the new Secretary of State haha!

@Repian - that would actually be pretty cool to see. My question is though where would this show up?

Even if it's just White Vision visiting Hayward in prison and throwing some philosophical thoughts at him, I do wanna see Hayward return in one way or another

Villainous suggests he wasn’t the hero of the damn thing.

Weakest character of the show. If they bring him back I think he’d need more of an arc otherwise I dont see the point

Here's a question: Why was he arrested in the end? For what? Like legitemately on what basis is that man going to jail.

Attempted Childmurder? Fair enough but they weren't real. Other than that he just tried to neutralize the threat posed to that town. Did he do it in a reasonable fashion: No!

But did he do it in a way that deems it necessary to incarserate him for it. I don't think either.

@SpaceAgent - 100% agree. He could've been just demoted or something.

@SpaceAgent - Hayward claims that Wanda stole the Vision’s body and resurrected him, to which Woo says “but that’s in direct violation of section 36-B of the Sokovia Accords” and Hayward adds “and against the Vision’s own living will”. “He didn’t want to be anybody’s weapon” Woo concludes.

All of this sets up the idea that resurrecting the Vision as a weapon is against the Sokovia accords (likely something written with Ultron in mind, as Ultron parts were scattered everywhere and experimenting with rebuilding him would naturally make people nervous.). This is furthered by the fact that Hayward kept his own project to revive the Vision a secret, that he provided false evidence to the FBI as to Wanda’s involvement, and tried to kill her with the drone to help cover up that lie. He eventually illegally arrested and detained an FBI agent with the belief that if he successfully took out a major-level threat like Wanda the ends would justify the means and his various infractions would be forgiven in light of his accomplishments, especially in providing the US a proven defensive weapon in the Vision.

But it didn’t work out and blew up in his face... he revived a weapon that is now AWOL, the Scarlet Witch wasn’t brought to justice, and the FBI has secured the scene. He’ll face charges on his various abuses of authority, most likely.
