WANDAVISION Star Paul Bettany Reveals Whether He Has Any Regrets After Teasing A Big Cameo In The Series

WandaVision is a series that spawned a million fan theories, but Paul Bettany created a fair few of his own when he teased a major cameo in the final couple of episodes. After revealing that he'd been given the opportunity to share the screen with an actor he had never had the pleasure of working with before, passionate fans soon started trying to figure out who he might be talking about.

Well, it didn't take long until they discovered that it had all been a joke and that the mystery actor was, in fact, himself (Bettany pulled double duty as two versions of The Vision).

Talking to The Playlist, the WandaVision star was asked if had any regrets about teasing fans.

"I’ve had all sorts of feelings about it," Bettany admitted. "Initially, it was massive regret, which was people started going because I thought it was a really funny joke and was pleased with myself. And then people were like, 'Is it going to be Patrick Stewart?' And then I went, 'Oh, my God, that’s a good idea. Oh, my God, people are going to be so disappointed when they realize it’s f**king me again.'"

"But in the end, I spoke to Kevin Feige about it," he added. "And he thought it was a really good joke, a really funny joke. And it didn’t backfire too much. For a second there, I was like, 'Oh, no. What am have I done?' But yeah. So I had all sorts of feelings regarding that."

While there's no denying that this joke backfired to some extent, it was pretty funny, and not worth getting mad over. Ultimately, WandaVision disappointed fans for not living up to the crazy theories online, and even if there had been a major cameo, the fact that a character like Mephisto didn't show up would almost certainly mean that plenty of viewers would have been cursing Marvel Studios!

Plus, seeing the White Vision on screen was still a pretty cool cameo...

I can imagine his regret only grew more when the director (or writer, I don't remember) said Paul really dug a whole himself he had to get out of on his own.

Personally, in hindsight it was pretty funny and really obvious from the interview once we knew.

Paul really had us scrambling to figure things out then be disappointed when we found out. I think it actually made the joke even more funny and taught us all lessons

@Waddles - lol this is fact. I think it actually was a good reminder for myself how deep into this stuff I had gotten. I started coming around here in 2012 but didn’t make a profile until after age of ultron but before that I didn’t know anything about speculation, spoilers, and teaser trailers to teaser trailers lol now I’ve grown to not only expect it but also to seek these things out.

It was almost like the constant need for information was better than the movie. After a movie would air it was always like “alright what else you got?” Rather than actually enjoying the moments.

I can’t lie the WandaVision speculation made that show fun but it made the finale a let down because of expectations so I’ve definitely took a step back from everything and just kind of enjoy the show both figuratively and literally lol

I thought it was a marvelous bit of trolling. I wish more actors would get trolly when doing these types of interviews, specifically because websites like this one would go nuts and publish a bajillion articles. Remember during the Batman v. Superman/Justice League press tour when every time Ben Affleck opened his mouth it resulted in dozens of articles about the potential Batman franchise?

It was hilarious. Everyone associated with that show trolled the world for weeks and I honestly don't blame them.

@inkniron - This one doesn't bother me so much. It was something he said, outside of the show or the universe, that was a bit of a troll and a lot of a joke. It's innocent and forgivable. And I can see why Feige thought it would be funny - after the fact - as it was just meant as an off-handed joke. And clearly Paul had moments of regret and panic about whether he went to far.

The "engineer" bit, though, is something else entirely. They planted a seed that this was going to be a character of at least some importance and impact. It turned out to be a nobody who did nothing to further the narrative or the universe. The worst kind of sloppy, self-serving red herring. I think Jac said it was an amalgam of all the women who had helped her through the years or some such BS. Ugh. These aren't your toys to play with, Jac. These are Marvel properties. That one was incompetent, egotistical trolling, and super-cheap. Feige should have put the kybosh on that. This and his comments re: Strange about having the "white guy" or whatever show up and save everyone at the end of made me question his judgement a bit.

@CharleyBologna - That was a throwaway line to handwave away with an in universe explanation of how things happened. It wasn't planting a seed and it only gained that much traction in the fans' minds. They literally never mentioned it again. It wasn't a tease. It wasn't trolling. It was just, again, a throwaway line of dialogue.

@buck08 - So Marvel is now sloppy? Is that what you are suggesting?

These narratives are tightly woven. We - fans - had good reason to see it as important and impactful based on the MCUs very good track record of making things fit neatly together.

It wasn't throw-away, and it wasn't sloppiness. Jac had a purpose behind that engineer: her ego and inexperience led her to introduce Major "Females who have helped me through me life" or whatever her name was.

@CharleyBologna - every movie in existence has throwaway lines of dialogue, you really think people take the time to make each individual word symbolize something
buck08
buck08 - 6/2/2021, 11:47 AM
@CharleyBologna - No, it wasn't sloppy. But it was never meant to be something important or a major character either. I never even remotely thought that until I went online afterwards and saw people theorycraft about it. And I still thought it was people really grasping at straws.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - It wasn't a throw away line of dialogue, though. Not even close.

It setup a new character, and aerospace engineer, as someone they could call upon for help. In a universe full of smart, interesting, relevant and important scientist-types, of course this isn't going to come across as throw away. Its going to come across as meaningful.

But it wasn't. The amateur showrunner decided her ego was more important than the broader universe and specifically created and injected a pointless character to do a pointless thing that ultimately furthered the show and MCU not one single bit.

This was not throw away taken to the extreme by a few deranged fans, and it was not slop. This was bad writing, bad direction, and poor ego-centric strategy on the part of the showrunner who maybe needed a little more experience and mentoring before taking on such a big project.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Kubrick. Hitchcock. Nolan. All pay great attention to detail - all would take issue with your statement about throw away. Feige seems to be in the same camp, certinaly when it comes to the broad brushstrokes of his very connected universe's mural. He's no Snyder-bro, Mike Bay-level slouch just Wiley-nilly tossing out concepts or drawing threads later to drop them.

Its like some of you folks just can't handle admitting that Marvel didn't make the most out of WV.

@CharleyBologna - they literally put a throwaway dr strange line in Cap 2, and civil war when Tony is talking about putting coffee grounds in a sink. Because someone is aerospace engineer it’s supposed to be special like there hundreds thousands even millions of engineers in real life
CharleyBologna
CharleyBologna - 6/3/2021, 6:14 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - I never considered the Steven Strange reference in WS throwaway. He was one folks radar on Hydra's radar as someone "special" and with potential. I thought it was a neat nod to what he would become to the broader MCU (and to Hydra's insights into who was who in the MCU - even before the characters or audience knew themselves). This is not a throwaway. This is foreshadowing. It's a pitiful example that supports my POV and invalidates yours.

The coffee grounds line was a joke. It's not like there is a major or minor marvel character infamous for disrespecting garbage disposals and or cofee grounds. "Must have been Viktor Von Doom, he's such an a-hole when it comes to coffee grounds!" were words never thought or spoken after Civil War. It was something called a joke. You brought it up out of desperation. Next your or going to mention the dude playing Galaga on the Shield Carrier.

The WV showrunner teased something important, and it turned out to only be important to her. Maybe she did not realize what she was doing. Either way, It should she's too immature, lacks depth of Marvel legacy knowledge, and is simply too selfish to play in these sandbox with these toys. Bad hiring, bad writing, bad strategy.

Do better, Disney.
