Sandra Bullock Turned Down A Superhero Role, & Is Leaving It Up To The Internet To Figure Out Which One

Sandra Bullock (Speed, Demolition Man) has revealed that she turned down a superhero role a few years ago, and while she wouldn't reveal which one, she did drop a few hints for the internet!

Sandra Bullock has tried her hand at a number of different genres over the course of her 30+ year career, and although she has dabbled in sci-fi (Demolition Man, Bird Box), she has yet to find herself suiting-up for a comic book/superhero project.

The Academy Award-winner was reportedly courted to play Diana back when Joss Whedon was at the helm of Warner Bros.' first attempt to get a Wonder Woman movie off the ground, but the Speed star has now revealed that she was offered another superhero movie role a few years ago.

Bullock didn't specify which film, but she did drop a few hints during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

"I was approached for something that wasn't Marvel, but my son said not to do it. It was kind of in the place that Louis felt I shouldn't be... and he was actually right. I saw it when it came out and I was like, 'Ooo! That's unfortunate.'"

Bullock would also confirm that it wasn't a DC movie, before adding that her 11 year-old son was around 6 at the time and that she's sure "the internets will" figure it out.

This does narrow it down a little, and if the movie came out in 2016 or 2017, we're going to hazard a guess that it was either X-Men: Apocalypse or Power Rangers! We've no idea who Bullock would have played in the former, so our money would be on the part Elizabeth Banks would ultimately land in the latter, Rita Repulsa.

There's still plenty of time for Bullock to board one of the big superhero franchises, of course, but it doesn't sound like it'd be something she'd be particularly interested in: "I don't think I'm Marvel material."

What do you guys think? Any guesses? Drop us a comment down below, and be sure to catch Bullock in Netflix's The Unforgivable this December.

@defenderofthefaith - you mean the cat woman that came out 18 years ago, when her son who told her not to do it didn’t exist?

@Havenless - so much for joking with my answer. Not only did I pick a old movie but I picked a DC one too. Thought it was obvious I was just being funny. Apparently not.

My guess with no context would have been an Amazon in WW. But if it wasn't Marvel or DC then i have no idea.

Someone in the comments under the yt video said it could've been the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, as she had worked with Melissa Mccarthy already.

@FinnishDude - absolutely are superheroes. They fight supernatural evils with super-technologically contrived Uber weapons.

@Havenless - So, are Star Trek captains superheroes? Luke Skywalker? James Bond?

I know that superhero can be pretty flexable title, so to speak, and plenty of characters are counted as superheroes, without being such in the most traditional sense, but Ghostbusters check too few boxes for me to count them.

@Reeds2Much - I'd say that Batman gets into the superhero category via the "Dress Like Superman" clause. The chest symbol and tights is basically the only thing that sets him apart from pulpy "not-really-superhero's" like the Spider of the Shadow.

Wait... I've got to be careful here because I'm not on board with Phantom being a superhero. ...Okay, it's a 2 out of 3 situation. The official rule is: You are automatically a superhero if you have 2 or more from this list.

□ Cape
□ Tights
□ Chest Symbol

Superman and Batman all have all three. Shadow, Spider, and Phantom only have one each. ...Wait... does Wonder Woman technically wear tights? (Oh no, my perfectly logical system is falling apart again.)
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 11/23/2021, 2:45 PM
@LSHF - Again, that's such a broad definition that a ton of characters who you would never consider superheroes would also count.

@FinnishDude - Yep; that's true.

This is an interesting thread to me, because I have my many DVD's/Blu-rays divided into genres, and when it came to "Super Heroes", there are a LOT of ones which seemed in a grey area at first. So, I have to come up with some strictly defined definitions for the term (but just for the sake of figuring out what genre to put my movies in).

I think about in terms of the two words involved here;

"Hero" which could be any of us, and

"Super" which, from what I've seen in the comics, involved super powers and/or super technology.

In the meantime, I still put The Punisher in with the super hero stuff, even when he doesn't fit into my own personal definition. So, I thought I should call it "Comic Book Movies", but that left some others out.

In the end, the grey areas didn't matter much to me as long as I knew where to look for them.

I'll leave it up to greater minds to figure this mess out on this website.

@Spock0Clock - Just looked it up and the term superhero is co-trademarked by Marvel and DC so I guess the easiest technical answer is "Only if it's Marvel or DC."

Beyond that I'm sure we could argue in circles how characters both are and aren't. Like the X-Men don't wear capes and their symbols are generally on their belt buckles, which would bring the Phantom back into the mix since that's where his symbol was, and Ted Kord's Blue Beetle symbol is on his shoulders and just kind of overlaps onto his chest and back.

And let's say that one piece swimsuits count as tights (To bring Wonder Woman into the fray), does that also mean speedos also count as tights for characters like Thing? And if we're going by that then if Ben Grimm is then shouldn't Zangief? Would that magnificently manicured brush of masculinity on his chest be considered a symbol? It is quite distinct. His Bat-Signal would definitely be a toss-up between that and his beard.

Huh, never noticed Phantom wore striped underoos outside his tights. That's just weird. I may be drifting.
