ANDOR Director Toby Haynes Talks Big "I Can't Swim" Scene And What He Thinks Happened Next

The latest episode of Andor left us reeling courtesy of three simple words: "I can't swim." Now, the episode's director, Toby Haynes, has shared his thoughts on what might have become of poor Kino Loy.

Andor has delivered plenty of surprises so far, but the biggest came with the unexpected appearance of Andy Serkis as Kino Loy, a hardened prisoner in an Imperial factory on Narkina 5.

Despite wanting to keep his head down and serve his time, he was eventually convinced by Cassian to stage a jailbreak after learning the truth behind their captivity: no one leaves, they stay there until they die. From the start, the actor has stolen the show, but he took that to another level in this past Wednesday's episode.

In that, Cassian and Kino found their freedom, only to learn that the only way to escape was by jumping into the water below. It was then the latter broke all our hearts when he told the future Rebel, "I can't swim."

Talking to Entertainment Weekly (via SFFGazette.com), director Toby Haynes was asked what became of Kino. "Oh my God, I wish I knew," he laughs. "I'm a fan from here on, so whether he comes back in this season or not, I don't know."

"I think it's open there with what happens to his storyline. He certainly wasn't killed. So we know that much," the director said on a slightly more serious note. "And then that's the interesting thing about [creator Tony Gilroy's] writing. If you're not dead, then who knows what's gonna happen to your character. So [his return] could happen."

Haynes would go on to say that Serkis originally handled the moment much differently. "The way that Andy played it, we were doing it where he's sort of angry and it's emotional that he's saying, 'I can't swim! I can't swim!'"

"But then he just suddenly played it in this serene way where he was smiling and he goes, 'I've done all this and I can't actually get out, I can't swim. This is where we say goodbye.' I thought that was absolutely inspired and that was great working with Andy that he would just chuck ideas at it and you wouldn't know it until he was actually doing it."

We're hoping poor Kino does show up either next week or in season 2 of Andor, but it's possible his fate will forever remain a mystery to us. That would be frustrating, but it would ensure the character remains at the forefront of all our minds moving forward, with fans no doubt debating what came next for years to come.

The penultimate episode of Andor arrives on Disney+ next Wednesday.

Somehow this show makes far better use of Andy Serkis' acting than 2 whole movies in the ST did.

Only
Kill
Everyone.

Awesome prison break. I thought the buildup was worth it.

@Thing94 - Its something new and refreshing for the franchise, it doesnt have a lot of action or "force" related elements, but the acting and writing is a 10, it gave us a new perspective of what star wars can be, a mix of drama, suspense, etc

@Thing94 - Might be the best live action SW content since the original trilogy. Some people don't seem to like Andor because it isn't non-stop action.

@Thing94 - No, not at this point. Super boring, as you can see in the quantity of comments (compared to something awesome like Mando). If you're into slow, tedious, political shows which have light action, you may enjoy it. It's much more like Blade Runner w/ politics than Star Wars.

@Thing94 - if you want to see lightsabers and cartwheels while fighting stormtroopers then don’t watch this. If you like character development and a plot then maybe you’ll like it. If you liked Rogue one then you should give it a try.

@ridah - mando played out like a script for a video game. He was everybody’s bitch. He would go to one planet to get some information or some thing and the person wouldn’t help him until he did something for them. Then again at the next location. Then again at the next location. Then a whole lot of walking in the desert…..when he has a space ship. Then more walking in the desert.
Mando is for the kids. And or is really aimed for adults. I’m not gonna say that one is better than the other. But they’re meant for different age groups.

@Thing94 - It isn’t so much light on action as much as it just saves all the action for certain episodes, and then those episodes tend to be balls to the wall. This most recent one with Serkis being one of those. The show is essentially made up of a bunch of 3-parters and I think understanding that makes it play better. Which I think is cool because it basically gives the show multiple season finales. There’s usually about 2 episodes of build up and then a crazy third episode climax. This most recent prison break storyline was 3 episodes with the actual break-out happening for almost all of the third one. And it’s one of the best Star Wars things I’ve ever seen. The build up is necessary to make those climaxes really pay off. The writing is just top notch. Give it a chance but understand what you’re getting.

@Thing94 - Andor is the best-written live action Star Wars content EVER.

It is not the most fun, flashy, or the most exciting Star Wars has ever been, but it IS the best written. And I say this as someone who loves the original 6 films and Mandalorian. I love them all but Andor is just better written, full stop.

It is a slow, slow-burn political thriller/drama set in the Star Wars universe. It shows you in pain-staking, depressing detail how subtly horrific and oppressing the Empire is, and why average people would be willing to die to fight it, better than any other live-action SW content before. It plays like a WW2 drama set behind enemy lines, but with a dystopian-futuristic aesthetic.

I can't recommend it enough, but it's definitely not for everyone so it'll really come down to your personal tastes.
