ANDOR Showrunner Tony Gilroy Suggests Season 2 Will Likely Abandon Hunt For Cassian's Missing Sister

Despite the fact it was a key plot point while exploring Cassian's childhood in the first few episodes of Andor, it sounds like the hunt for the Rebel's missing sister will not factor into season 2...

Andor wasted no time in taking us back to Cassian's childhood, with the first few episodes revealing the future Rebel was attempting to find his sister. Understandably, that hunt took a backseat after he ran afoul of the Empire, though the hope is we might learn what became of Kerri in season 2.

During a recent interview with Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy addressed that dangling plot thread and strongly hinted we won't get to see Cassian resume his search...or find his sister!

"One of the important things in this show, because of the expanse of it, and because of the detail of it, is knowing when and where to make things intricate and have them tie together, and the other side of it is knowing when to let things go and have chaos."

"And because that’s what life is like and finding that balance that suits the storytelling is part of it. I don’t feel beholden to what you’re talking about in any way, but there are a lot of things that we do that are intricate, that we weed along the way. So that’s a complicated answer."

While not outright stating that this storyline has been abandoned, it seems likely. Perhaps not every mystery needs an answer? After all, the odds of them finding each other again always seemed slim.

Original plans called for Andor to take place over five seasons, with each of those devoted to a year in Cassian's life. Diego Luna, however, baulked at the idea of being committed to the series for that long and plans changed.

As a result, while season 1 was something of a slow burn, the next 12 episodes will cover a number of years, establishing Cassian's place in the Rebellion along the way. Diverging from that for him to track his sister down would be a little strange, so it could be we just get a throwaway line or two revealing Kerri's fate.

Talking about the format change, Gilroy said, "When we come back later, it’ll be literally like a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And then, we’ll jump a year, and then it’ll be, like, four or five days, and then we’ll jump a year, and then there’ll be another four or five days, and then we jump a year, and be another four or five days."

Andor season 2 is set to premiere on Disney+ in August 2024.

It's funny how the show no one believed in turned out to be the best thing about Star Wars in years.

Hate shit like this. Why include it if you don't ever plan to address it again

@BigPhilbowski - Clearly plans changed when the show was reduced from the original 5 seasons. Sounds like something that had to be adjusted for time.

@Shivermetimbers - the 5 year plan was scrapped before they even shot the first season

Tbf they abandoned it early in Season 1 and I forgot all about it once he got tangled in all the rebel stuff. It just one of those things that propelled him into his journey.

@PlusUltra - "It just one of those things that propelled him into his journey."

IMO, it doesn't effectively work that way. Uncle Owen wanting some new droids to help out around the farm is the kind of background goal that it's easy to shift focus from after it serves the purpose of putting things in motion. Andor's very first scene establishes the goal of finding his sister, then they create further investment in that by flashing back to his childhood. This isn't one of those backstory goals that's easy to set aside. It feels like a vital thing that the show is failing to follow up on, which just makes it feels poorly structured.

It annoys me when they just abandon things they introduce. If you aren't planning on utilizing it as originally intended, find a fast way to use it and wrap it up.

For God sakes, even a throw away line in the beginning of the new season like...

"What's wrong with Cassian?"

"He found out how his sister died."

@TheVandalore - Gilroy didn't say he was never going to mention his sister again. The author of the article made it much more dramatic sounding than what the director actually said. It sounds like they may not actually find his sister, but I would be shocked if it isn't addressed at all. Even something like you suggested will likely be added.

It was a thing for half a minute. Obviously Gilroy just needed a reason for Cassian to be there in the first place. What I don’t understand is why they even went with this. But honestly the first two episodes were quite sloppy between this odd plot point and the very confused Republic/Confederacy/Empire mix-up.

Andor is very well written, but I think there were some huge misguided steps: 1) the show takes too long developing Andor’s character arc; 2) Gilroy oddly portrays the Rebellion through a Marxist/anti-colonialist lens rather than through the classical liberalist lens that underlies the OT; and 3) absolutely wastes Mon Mothma by reducing her to a wealthy humanitarian and rebellion financier following Luthen’s lead when she is supposed to be one of the Rebellion’s long-standing founders and a close confidante of the other co-founder, Bail Organa.

I’m curious to see how season 2 actually gets Andor to Rogue One, because again, though it’s written well, Season 1 feels like it’s on a very different trajectory than one that actually leads to Rogue One.

The first season pretty much abandoned this midway through the pilot, which was one of my biggest annoyances. If a character goal isn't important to your story, maybe don't make it the focus of the very first scene and the flashbacks that follow it.
