Rogue One: A Star Wars Story followed a brave team of Rebels embarking on a dangerous mission to steal the Empire's Death Star plans, and they eventually gave their lives to strike a deadly blow to Imperial forces. Cassian Andor was one of them, of course, but Diego Luna will reprise the role for Disney+'s Andor, a prequel series that reveals how he came to play such a vital role in the Rebellion.

While Tony Gilroy was forced to pass directing duties on the show to Toby Haynes, he remains Andor's showrunner and revealed new details about the spinoff to Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com).

"This guy gave his life for the galaxy, right? I mean, he consciously, soberly, without vanity or recognition, sacrificed himself. Who does that?" the filmmaker ponders. "That’s what this first season is about. It’s about him being really revolution-averse, and cynical, and lost, and kind of a mess."

Andor starts with the destruction of Cassian's homeworld before following him into adulthood. "His adopted home will become the base of our whole first season, and we watch that place become radicalized," Gilroy teases. "Then we see another planet that’s completely taken apart in a colonial kind of way. The Empire is expanding rapidly. They’re wiping out anybody who’s in their way."

For Luna, there was a lot in Andor that resonated with him personally, hence why he reprised the role. "It’s the journey of a migrant," he says, having previously referred to the show as a "refugee story" in this conversation. "That feeling of having to move is behind this story, very profoundly and very strong. That shapes you as a person. It defines you in many ways, and what you are willing to do."

This series sounds like a fun ride and a fascinating glimpse into what made Cassian Andor a Rebel willing to give his life for the cause. With any luck, a trailer for the show isn't too far off.

The site notes that Andor is expected to arrive on Disney+ over the summer, and we're expecting the premiere date to be announced during Star Wars Celebration a little later this month.

Was afraid this was just gonna be some general spy story that maybe just as easily could've been told with with Poe and the Resistance, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It does sound like an interesting premise. Looks like the importance of the time and place and characters are gonna play a major role.

Felt like his story was told in Rogue One.

@regularmovieguy - Just like Han Solo. The character change that makes him interesting happens in the future, and we've already seen it play out.

Sounds interesting. Can't say this is high on my list but I like what Gilroy is saying here.

How Cassian Andor has gotten a TV series before Revan has appeared in live action is wild to me. And yeah I like the character and maybe the show will be great, but their insistence on everything tying to the Skywalker saga is like going into a fight with your arms tied behind your back and your legs tied together. There’s so much more to explore that can be so much better than anything we’ve gotten from Star Wars.

Sounds like pure hate and it’s not intended that way. Not saying I don’t want more Mandalorian or that I didn’t want the Obi-Wan series, but if they could just give something entirely new or even adapting some Old Republic stuff, it’d be a lot of fun to just divert from the Skywalker Saga and allow for for something different to be told.

@PhoenixBlade - I 100% get what you're saying here. I am excited for all the upcoming stuff, Andor now more than ever where I wasn't before when announced.

But how we don't have any info yet about Old Republic stories with Revan, Bane, Malgus, Malek, Shan, etc is unfortunate. I am hoping for some kind of tease at SW celebration.

Also, diving into TOR stories can open up so many possibilities for future stories and have huge impacts.

@Menks123 - I think they’re afraid people won’t be interested if they introduce something that’s not familiar. Even The Acolyte is only 100 years before the prequels and will obviously be setting up some stuff in there.

Luna was great in Narcos: Mexico so will give the show a chance. Rogue One was great so it is cool to have more Rebel projects. Just don’t make this series a cameo fest and a spin-off fest.
