ANDOR Star Diego Luna Compares The Upcoming STAR WARS TV Series To A Movie; Teases ROGUE ONE Connections

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ended with the heroic team of Rebels who stole the Death Star plans all dying after succeeding in their mission. It was a tragic, yet fitting ending, but Cassian Andor will return in a prequel TV series, Andor, coming to Disney+ sometime in 2022.

The show is set to run for twelve episodes, taking an in-depth look at what led Cassian to joining the Rebel Alliance all those years ago. There's definitely a story to be told there, and the hope is that we'll see some other familiar faces from the Star Wars Universe along the way.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Diego Luna opened up on his excitement to tell this story.

"It’s really interesting to tell a story even though we know where it ends. The way you can approach a story like this inevitably takes you into a deeper process of reflection," the actor explains. "I tend to use that word a lot. So once you know what Cassian is capable of, then there’s room for so much exploration, and that’s something that excites me a lot as an actor."

"I think the format of a series is amazing because we have a lot of time to explore all those layers. What happens in Rogue One is something we can actually reflect on, and what’s behind something like [sacrificing an informant]. It’s a very interesting challenge, the one we have in front of us. So I’m really excited to go back to that character because I really enjoyed playing him, and I was really happy with what the film represents.  I feel blessed to have the chance to revisit this role."

Asked if Andor will make use of the same Volume technology we've seen used in The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luna responded: "I have to be very careful in the way I answer everything. The way we’re shooting this reminds me of how we shot the film, and the amount of work behind this TV series reminds me of the work you do for a film. It feels like we’re doing a very long movie."

It's still too soon to say whether this story needs to be told over twelve episodes, but Lucasfilm clearly feels that it's worth filling in some of the gaps between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. With an actor as talented as Luna in the lead role, though, we're definitely excited to see where this goes.

Is Alan Tudyk in this?

Either way, not that interested. The Rougue one characters were fine for one adventure, but none of them were interesting enough to support a show, let alone one on their own

I watched Rogue One the other week for the first time since seeing it in cinema, it’s definitely my favourite movie of the new era of Star Wars, but Andor was a little disjointed from the story telling.

I hope they don’t flesh him out in this series, for his character development to make little to no sense in Rogue One.

“Teases” Rouge one connections

@manofillintent1 -

I'll admit that's a strange way to put it seeing as it should be entirely connected to Rouge One.

Admittedly, I'm not crazy excited or anticipating this series, but loved Rogue One.

I agree with what Diego is saying though. I don't know how many people are interested in Cassian Andor the character per se, but because he is a rebel and we are exploring his adventures prior to Rogue One, we could actually get a look at A LOT of the behind the scenes of the Rebellion-Empire conflict and more.

I'd say be less excited for the character and more excited with what the character can introduce us to in the Rebellion Era. That's what he'll really be great for. Giving us a peek behind the curtain of the Rebellion.

The gritty criminal underworld of Coruscant, Black Sun and their Vigos, and Hutt cartels will always be more interesting to me than the politics of the Rebels/ Imperials.

We got shades of that in 'Solo' and 'Mandalorian', but I'd pay to see a full-fledged Rogues & Scoundrels show. Spice-running for gangster overlords.

@GothamSon - call me crazy... but imagine a Star Wars gangster underworld film directed by Guy Ritchie, and written by Lawrence Kasdan.

OT: The way he performs miracles and then looks back at the camera is just full of the exaggerated humility of the Son of God.

I hope for Luna it'll be a success, but I just can't get excited for this in the slightest.

Will this be an ongoing series like The Mandalorian or a miniseries like the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series?

@tb86 - I think everything on D+ can technically become an ongoing series over multiple seasons. Only that Andor and Obi-Wan have certain cut-off points.
If Andor is set 4 years before Rogue One they can obviously turn it into a 4 season running show. However I'm not sure it's going to be as much of a hit as Mandalorian was. He wasn't even the most memorable part in the only movie he appeared in. I'll certainly watch it, not so sure about casual SW fans.

@Blergh - To Be fair the most memorable thing about Andor was The Alan Tudyk droid who in my opinion is the best og character in the movie and maybe the reason they are making this show is because of him.

@Blergh - Obi Wan is confirmed time only be a limited mini series. Book of Boba is reported to have a small episode count so there’s a chance that one will be a limited series as well.

@MrDandy - from experience with previously announced limited series that turned into ongoing ones: the term "limited series" only sticks if the show isn't a success.

Wayward Pines was originally a limited-event series. However it was so popular in its first season that it got extended and recieved a second season.
This has happened for multiple hits, I can almost gurantee you that D+ has an option for more episodes if the show explodes.

By far the most baffling idea for a series I’ve seen in a long time

I don’t think this series interests me. Hard to get invested in a story that’s already been concluded. But to contradict myself I’m excited to see the Obi Won series. He just seems like a character that could have some very entertaining stories left to tell.
All the other shows seem to be interesting and intriguing.
Blergh
Blergh - 12/22/2020, 7:23 AM
@slickrickdesigns - not really contradicting. Obi-Wan is a Star Wars legend and character that has been largely beloved in pop-culture. Meanwhile the character of Cassian Andor was little more than the male love interest to a more interesting character.

I just get the feeling this show was created out of a still open contract with Diego Luna that they're now making good on.

It seems odd how many people act like this show was greenlit because of Cassian as a character. It's clear they wanted a Rebellion-centric show and Cassian is really the only established rebel they have available to lead the show.
Blergh
Blergh - 12/22/2020, 7:26 AM
@SerKurtWagner - Then they should/could have gone with a new character the audience would know didn't already die.

Heck, I'd argue a show about a new rebel characer (or Kyle Katarn) would be better longevity wise. This one seems to only have so-much to tell.

@Blergh - See, I just don't get that POV, and I really don't think most people have it. Just look at Kenobi. Everyone has known how he dies since 1977, but everyone is hyped for that show.

What's the point of this show? Politics and arguing before he and his friends all get killed?

This character is so boring. I have really little interest in this show. They should have made it about Donnie Yen’s character. He was wasted in Rogue One

slickrickdesigns - 12/22/2020, 9:48 AM
@MrDandy - agree... I felt like that character was underused and the second most interesting character from the Rogue One movie.

Not crazy about Andor, but if the tone is similar to Rogue One I'm down to watch. Liked how gritty that movie was compared to typical SW fare.

A Star Wars show about Rebel espionage operations, with K2SO as comic relief? This is actually one of the Star Wars shows I'm most interested in seeing!
