STAR WARS: That OBI-WAN KENOBI Movie May End Up Debuting On Disney's New Streaming Service

Work may have stalled on Lucasfilm's planned standalone movie for Obi-Wan Kenobi but a new report points to it now debuting on Disney's streaming service rather than in theaters. Hit the jump for details!

We've been hearing an awful lot about Lucasfilm's plans for future Star Wars movies with the consensus being that the studio is now reevaluating its plans for spinoffs revolving around characters like Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the case of the latter, it sounds like the Jedi Master will be making his presence felt on Disney's planned streaming service, something they hope will rival Netflix. 

Apparently, Stephen Daldry exited the movie around six months ago, meaning that Solo: A Star Wars Story isn't to blame for the spinoff's production woes. With Disney's streaming service planned for a Fall 2019 debut, it's said that Obi-Wan Kenobi could debut there as a means of generating interest when it launches; after all, you have to believe that moviegoers would subscribe to check that out. 

While an argument could be made that Obi-Wan Kenobi should be shown on the big screen, the line between movie theaters and home entertainment is blurring, hence why the likes of Bright and Gerald’s Game debut on Netflix. Warner Bros. is taking a similar approach to this by putting shows like Titans and Doom Patrol on DC Universe rather than TV so this obviously makes a lot of sense.

Love Disney and Star Wars, but please....stooooop with going back to these characters. Go forward with new characters and stories and expand the universe.

Go alllll the way back to The Old Republic and introduce legends that can make appearances and serve the stories down the line as well. This is not hard.

@Menks123 - I keep seeing these comments but I don’t understand them. They are already doing this with the Johnson trilogy and the Benioff & Weiss films. These potential films like Obi-wan and Boba Fett are just bonus thing in addition to all these films about new characters in new parts of the galaxy.

Makes sense, but it's going to be hard to justify subscribing to another steaming service. So I guess we'll see.

This is actually great news. Everything that isn't main saga (whether it's marvel, star wars or disney original) should be on the service. I hope the live action star wars series, future marvel series and some other disney properties all end up on the streaming service. Mainly because I know I am gonna subscribe to it, so I really want it being all worth it (although I know it will be family friendly orientated).

Also, do we know anything about what the service is gonna be called?

Personally I can't think of anything less interesting to do with the Star Wars franchise than make an Obi-Wan film but people inexplicably seem to be clamouring for it so I hope they like it if it does get made.

I'll be giving it a miss whether it's on streaming services or in cinemas though.

@FromACertainPOV - it's definitely not the most obvious concept for a stand alone movie but I personally think there's a lot of potential in a solo Obi Wan movie set during that period of time. It would probably be very different to other Star Wars movies - far less space travel and spaceship fights - but it could be an opportunity to make a movie that's a bit like an old school western like the Searchers or (as a bit more of a modern example) Unforgiven. Something a bit smaller in scale and more personal and atmospheric and character driven.

@AC1 - If there's one thing that Obi Wan Kenobi doesn't need it's a character driven film.

Outside of Luke / Anakin, he's arguably the franchise's main character. He's appeared in some form or another in 7 out of the 8 saga films as well as an animated movie and has appeared in 3 tv shows that pretty much fully fill in the gaps between the individual prequel films as well as that trilogy and the original films.

And no matter how watchable Ewan McGreggor is in the part or how much you make it like Yojimbo, it's still a dull choice for what should be palate cleansing and unique universe expanding Star Wars Story's.

No. These movies deserve to be seen on the big screen.
If they wanted to do a simultaneous release then I could understand that, but don't prioritise streaming over cinema, especially as it'll likely have a negative impact on the movie rather than a positive one.

@AC1 - I just took my nieces to see Incredibles 2 yesterday. There were over 40 minutes of commercials, trailers, a short film and an intro with the cast. The movie is long for a kids movie to vegin with. That was excessive, to say the least. I almost was late returning her for her birthday party.

If this is going to continue, the please release all films simultaneously on streaming services. I don't need to watch half a movies worth of nonsense before a film.

@TomSolo - 40 minutes?! That's insane, especially before a kid's movie!

If that's the case I definitely don't blame you for wanting simultaneous streaming. While it's a shame you'd lose the "magic" of the cinema, I feel like such an unnecessary wait must ruin it anyway.

Makes me glad here in the UK there seems to be a fairly uniform 20 minutes of ads between the doors opening and the movie starting (although that could be different in other cinemas and cities but it's always roughly 20 mins here)

@AC1 - To be fair, the commercials did start 15 minutes prior to showtime. But that still meant there was over 30 minites of stuff before the movie actually started.

I was in a different area... closer to a larger city. So that may be the norm there. I am not used to that amount of stuff before a movie starts. In my area, the commercials end before the showtime. The trailers start at showtime, and there are only about 5 or so.

@TomSolo - yeah normally what happens here is the ads start at the time on the ticket and around 20 mins later the film begins (also in a major city)

@AC1 - Also, my local theater has big reclining chairs that almost lay flat, small tables that swivel in front of you for food, a kitchen, a bar and you can pick and reserve uour seats online. I'm a bit spoiled.

@AC1 - Funny you say that... that is exactly how they sell it. And really, for movie theater prices, the food from the kitchen and the booze is not terribly priced.

I don’t know if I buy that. Within a few months of release it can be on the streaming service anyway so are they really going to skip the money it could make in the theaters? When they already have multiple Star Wars series in mind to sell the service?

Guess that lets-out Ewan McGregor reprising the roll. He probably wouldn't want to do a Star Wars movie that's going to be on a streaming service that no one will see as opposed to a theatrical movie.

@gremlin22 - I think he would. It would still be a huge deal that would pay him handsomely. And he has done television recently.
