THE MANDALORIAN: Werner Herzog Called Jon Favreau And Dave Filoni "Cowards" For Considering A VFX Baby Yoda

The Mandalorian star Werner Herzog was not happy when Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni thought about replacing the puppet Baby Yoda with a VFX double, and branded the filmmakers "cowards" for considering it...

The Mandalorian's "Baby Yoda" has taken the internet by storm and it's fair to say that we can't get enough to the adorable little alien. Someone else who is particularly taken with the creature is Werner Herzog, the legendary actor and filmmaker who plays the villainous client in the Disney+ TV series.

According to Vanity Fair, when Herzog saw Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni "removing the miniature creature from set during one of his scenes with the being," he wanted to know why.

They were preparing to shoot a blank slate of the sequence as a backup in case they decided during postproduction that the puppet wasn’t convincing enough and a digital version had to be substituted.

Herzog, known for films about pushing the limits of human ability and endurance, could not hide his contempt.

"You are cowards," he declared. "Leave it."

Thing get weirder, though, as "Chapter 3" director Deborah Chow has recalled a very unique moment on set which came when Herzog started interacting with the baby as if it were real.

"I was directing Werner with the puppet, and Werner had just fallen in love with the baby," she explains. "Werner, I think, had forgotten it wasn’t actually a live creature, and started sort of...directing the baby. Werner is talking to the baby as if it was a real thing. And I’m trying to direct Werner. And I’m just like, How did I get here? How did my life end up like this?"

Crazy, right?

In other news for The Mandalorian, a first look at "Chapter 4" has been revealed courtesy of the new "Continue Watching" feature on Disney+ and it appears this will be the longest episode to date.

One of the main assets about this show is the love they have for practical effects. Some things do require CGI but if you can make it practical it makes the experience more significant.

I've been loving this series specifically for its use of practical effects. It gives it a more authentic Star Wars feel.

@smgmayhem - Absolutely. That's always been the key - it has to have that otherworldly feel to it. A lot of that can be attributed to the use of practical effects and puppetry.

I do like that they use a puppet. Sometimes it's very obvious indeed and I like that. The only time I don't is when the Pascalorian is carrying Baby Yoda and he feels too light. Other than that, no complaints.

"Cowards" was a strong and unnecessary jab though lol.

I had a great time reading this last night. What a legend. The right call by far, he looks incredibly real. The whole show does, they nailed the old trilogy aesthetic.

@Kyos - let me toss in Galen Erso for runner up consideration. Performance was perfect for Star Wars and although character died with not much screen time...he was instrumental to the whole saga and possibly one of the bravest men in the Star Wars Saga.

Werner Herzog is my nomination to replace Sir David Attenborough if god forbid his health ever stops him from doing Planet Earth.

It's weird because I actually thought it looked more like CGI than a puppet in a few shots.

I do love Werner Herzog.

Any fans of his early stuff on here? His Nosferatu has always been a fave of mine.

And I bet they left that damn puppet be. Herzog had spoken.
