DCUO NDA Lifted - See Screenshots from the Game

DCUO's NDA got lifted yesterday. Now I can post screencaps from the game and discuss it freely.

There are reviews popping up all over the web right now. The one thing I can do better is post screen caps from my perspective. The zones are amazingly big and beautiful. The art department for this game is top notch.

I created a ton of charcters to try out a bunch of powers. You'll see my 3 favorite charcters in the screencaps. Rapid - the speedster, Gadget - the acrobat, and Starlet - The Supergirl clone. They are based on characters from my superhero parody web comic Amazing Superteam.

This is a screen cap of the Metallo boss fight. you team up with superman to take him down.

This is from the boss instance to rescue Raven.

You team up with the Flash to take down Grodd.

In this fight you and some Green Lanturns team up to take down the Sinestro corps.

Fight Poisen Ivy

Rescue Robin... again. Robin sucks.

This is from Harley's hidout. It's an awesome zone. My favorite boss fight too.

Team up with Batwoman to take down Scarecrow.

This was an interesting fight. Giganta took over Wonder Girls Body and you had to assist Wonder Girl who is now in Gigant's body. If you win they revert back to their original bodies.

With super strength you can chuck cars.

Metropolis is huge

Bizarro wanders around saying "I don't know who to help." then he beats up everyone he sees.

Earth as seen from the Watchtower.

Inspiration

Wonder Woman is hot.

Gotham is big too.

Gotham from the air.

@GreenHalJordan - Honestly, there's not enough content to justify the subscription. There's barely 2 weeks worth of game play.

yeah i hate pay to play, i don't have nearly enough free time to dedicate that much money for something i can only play on the occasional weekend. for those of us who want it but can't justify the price it really sucks.
i mean really sucks. bad. so bad

The pay-to-play model is right for some games. It is an MMO where part of your monthly fee is the ability to team with other players, and where the developer continues to build and develop the game to keep subscribers.

You are too used to console games, where you buy it once, play it for a while and then you are done. The game publisher then comes out with a new game, and you have to pay again.

I've been in City of Heroes for years. I find it is a fantastic deal, because the game provides most of my entertainment for only 15 bucks a month (well, for me about 12 due to taking advantage of specials). I have a group of friends who have been together for almost as long as I have been in the game, and we meet up most nights to voice chat while in the game.

One of our group was in the DC Online Beta. He said that the game looked wonderful, but the gameplay was difficult and tedious. It is clearly designed for consoles, making the computer controls difficult and the options limited compared to a computer-only title like City of Heroes. It also has limited content, which is not unusual for a new game -- Champions Online had the same problem, and looks like it is failing. CoH is still going strong in part because it has a loyal subscriber base of around 100K and it has 7 years worth of content (plus, players can make their own missions). He is not interested in subscribing to DCUO after trying the Beta, but he said that his son liked it.

"I created a ton of charcters to try out a bunch of powers."

What do you consider a ton, there are only six power sets that are shared between heroes and villains? I agree with you that the game looks amazing, but it's about as shallow as an ants footprint.

It takes about 24 hours of play time to hit the level cap, and then a week or two to complete the end game content. I know they have state there will be small monthly updates, but anyone who games knows that there is no way that a significant amount of content can be churned out monthly. Usually enough to last a matter of hours, maybe days, but not a month's worth.

IMO it's a fun little action game, but I just don't see how this is going to work as a model for a game with a monthly subscription fee. I wish it all the luck in the world, anything that helps the comic industry only helps us fans down the road. We personally cancelled our two pre-orders after testing it for a couple of months.

@theWorld - yes you can get capes right away. They are available in the character creater.

@Ambushbug - I made about 15 characters, most made it to level 9 before i deleted them. On some of them i chose the same powers but different weapons to try different combos. I also agree with you that the game seriously lacks content. If it wasn't for testing and creating alts to try out different powers i would have been done with the game in 3-5 days. It is fun to play but the lack of content means that i wont be buying it.

what are the power sets you can use? I heard there are no power rings that your player can fight with? its a travesty....
bongotezz
bongotezz - 12/8/2010, 2:34 PM
@themanfromroom5 - fire, ice, nature, sorcery, gadgets, and mental.

@frog f u fanboy...

I really think that you should be able to make your player a member of the GL corps, or be able to make up your own corps

what does 'fanboy' have to do with what he said to you? Kinda random dontcha think? You get all butthurt cause he made a joke (it wasn't even insulting or meant to be). You need to get a grip on reality dude. I'm mad that you're mad over nothing lol.

On the topic at hand (not some random fight happening out of nowhere)...I agree with you on the whole can't use a power ring thing as ridiculous. Cause it is. Customization to me means customization lol. I should be able to do whatever I can think of (and most people can't come up with more than 100 different powers or abilities if there are that many).
Ambushbug
Ambushbug - 12/9/2010, 11:23 AM
It's made even more limited by the fact that your power set locks you into a role. Such as all fire and ice characters are tanks, all gadgets and mental characters are controllers, and all sorcery and nature characters are healers. Overall game just needs more diversity in every department. It would be a decent one shot action game to buy on a console, just don't see it being a success as a subscription based game but I guess we will see.
