I am trying to find some newer information on the progress of the New Mortal Kombat. But as I was searching I came across an interview moviehole had with director Mink on the progress of the film.
Mink had this to say

“The project isn't so much a sequel as it is a re-envisioning of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom. Todays audience is a savvy involved group so the film must be A plus plus in every area in order to capture the magic of the first film. It is taking the entire concept to the next level across the board in every area visual design, story, cast, FX, photography and most importantly the fighting scenes. The original Mortal Kombat game was born a child of many visual loves by the creators at midway so this latest version borrows heavily from that pioneering spirit and must be thought out and executed at the highest level in order for it succeed in today's market place. This is no overnight task."

And with regards to the casting of the film Mink replied

"First things first, the way these larger projects need to be done. It is still in the business stages but once that is squared away all casting options will be explored along with the continued development of the best story line."

This interview was taken in early 2008 so my guess is a lot has been done since that time. I am going to try me best to get in contact with individuals associated with the film and I will keep all the Mortal Kombat lovers’ posted.

Make it like "Deception". Then if they make a sequal, "Annihilation". Then "Armageddon" if they can get enough people to do it. Minus Mocap of course. He's just an extra guy who can't really do anything.

I love the Armageddon idea, but it only works in a video game. there are too many characters, and they can't make cameos, otherwise people will claim it's like the X-Men franchise. A bunch of characters w/ little to no character development.

As for Annihilation, there was already a movie w/ that title, and if they're going to move away from that series, then they're not going to use the same title.

Wow Hollywood; YOU SUCK!

Remaking Mortal Kombat??? I always knew the lack of originality in Hollywood was bad, but I didn't realize it was THIS BAD, DAMN!!!

Here's an Idea make your own movie about fighters pitted against each other to the death with a NEW/ORIGINAL twist to it.

The original Mortal Kombat was great. I don't need damn remake.

If the movie isn't 1.5 hours of Scorpion and Sub-Zero fighting then why bother even making it. Who cares about any other MK character, really.

The first movie was not good in any way except for the action scenes..Shang Tsung and Liu Kang acted ok, but the rest of the cast was annoying and useless, i wanted to gouge out Johhny Cages eyes. Sub Zero and Scorpion were reduced to no dialogue, one scene hero fodder when they should have been main characters with their own story arc..and dont get me started on that ridiculous ending..so its not like they are remaking [frick]ing Blade Runner here! There is lots to improve on so hopefully the make a smart action movie, as opposed to the brainless garbage thats usually made from games..the stories are there

I can't wait for the remake of the movie because I thought they could have done more with the franchise. The first movie Liu Kang seemed like a pansy and a wine-tit. The TV series was pretty interesting. I hope writers can come up with a better story line than the first two movie. I am a big Sub-Zero fan and he was strip of his character in the first two movies. Maybe they should start with the beginning of the history of Mortal Kombat and work from there. On the plus side, I hope they get Christopher Lambert as Raiden again. I really thought he brought the character act in the first movie. Overall, I hope they do it right this time because I love the DC vs. Mortal Kombat game so I hope they can bring that to the big screen. Maybe even a Marvel vs. Mortal Kombet game and/or movie would be great too!

Being a longtime Mk fan, this is music to my ears. I only hope this new movie will do for mortal kombat what batman begins did for the batman franchise.

I do hope they take a cue from the newer games and give everyone (especially the ninjas) individualized costumes.

I'm sure this is all just wishful thinking, but you never know...

Once again, there hasn't been any casting since they told us about this remake nearly a decade ago. Still in the "business stages" huh? That has to be one of the longest board meetings of all time - considering it has been in the "business stages" ever since Mortal Kombat Annihilation bombed in theaters back in 1997.

"The interview was taken in early 2008, so my guess is a lot has been done since that time."

Really? Do you really think that a lot has been done since that time? Do you really think that they have done any more in 1 year that they could not do in 11+ years? Really?

Leee you are a wacky bastard aint cha! Mk better than Wolverine? Yeeeaaaaaah sure! The worst actor in Wolverine ..lets say W.ill.iam..was 10 times better than the best actor in MK. It also had a better script, plot and was just an all round better movie. I still cant get over the fact you hate it so much but like some of the dross that you do..it beffudles me!

you guys are so retarded. this movie would F****** suck. And this isnt the third MK movie, its the fourth. That one with Kung Lao is the third one from 1998, straight to dvd release. you guys suck.

frankiepoo5 - 5/13/2009, 4:47 PM
MK cannot be made! it just can't. you try to combine bad ass martial arts, magic, mythical beasts, and characters that go from one end of the spectrum (jax) to the other (raiden) your bound to have it be lame. it works in the world of video games because then at least the audience is jazzed up on Mountain Dew and Twizzlers at 2AM, probably in highschool.

If this interview was taken in early 2008, that doesn't tell me that a lot has been done, but rather, nothing has been done. A third Mortal Kombat film has been talked about forever, and nothing has ever come of it. I'll be surprised if anything ever does.

Undoubtedly, the potential exists for a good to decent sequel to MK1 (I am totally excluding MK: Annihilation).
Will the studio allocate the required funds, and will the director inspire the main actors? It remains to be seen!
