More Street Fighter Films Are Headed Our Way...No Really.

In the WTF news segment, it looks as though Capcom is toying with the idea of doing more films in the franchise.

Recently, Capcom’s vice president of strategic planning and business development, Christian Svensson, sat down for an interview to discuss a few things in Capcom's future it lead to a few interesting bits of news. After two box office bombs, it seems that the company has not abandoned the Street Fighter franchise in the movie world, although I think most would agree that they should. He had this to say:

"Let’s just say there were a lot of people with different ideas as to what was the best route to take with that movie. A path was chosen, a result was had. I think there are some learnings internally that we’ve taken away from that experience. I think you’ll see some clever live-action stuff that will excite our fans at some point in the future, based on Street Fighter. Let’s just say that the book is not yet done on Street Fighter film and video projects."

This, along with several other franchises, have so much potential to be a good film series, but they just always seem to fall short. If you look at Capcom's Resident Evil film series, it is actually the second biggest franchise for Sony pictures, just behind the Spider-Man films. Although the Resident Evil films are far from perfect, they are at least somewhat entertaining.

Back to the interview, Svensson closed the topic of the Street Fighter films by saying that "...hopefully we get one right sometime in the future. There are more projects in the works."

Gee, that is so comforting to know.

I think that they are just going to keep trying until they get one right. Why don't they just take the story of the game... and put it on screen. BOOM! Everyone's happy.

I think they might give it to the guy who directed this since it was officially approved by Capcom after all:

If he did the movie like this video, would y'all go see it?

Personally, I'd love to see another "Street Fighter" film made... if it was actually done right.

Hear me out.

Fans have waited for all of these years to see a live-action "Street Fighter" film made and be entertaining and actually resemble the video games on which it's based upon. Fans want to see what's in the "Street Fighter" video games successfully translated to the big screen: have the characters done accurately, have the characters use the same special fighting moves the characters use (fireballs, sonic booms, etc.), wear the same fighting uniforms as their video game counterparts, and have the same backstories used in the games. The films also really, REALLY need to center on Ryu and Ken, not Guile and/or Chun-Li like the previous two movies did.

The only thing that "The Legend of Chun-Li" did successfully was make the Jean-Claude Van Damme "Street Fighter" watchable and entertaining.

HOWEVER, since this is Hollywood, we're more likely going to see another "Legend of Chun-Li" or "Dragonball" than a good, faithful film adaptation "Street Fighter". I imagine that, once again, the story is going to be paper thin, the characters act nothing like their counterparts, we're going to see them wearing different outfits than the game that in no way make them look recognizable to the fans, and there will be more of a need for explosions and lame, fake wire-used fight scenes than character development.

Then again, if the right filmmaker came along and actually cared about the project, we might get something good out of it. You never know. Still, time will tell.

@Sweetre15 - Wow! That "Legacy" fan film was impressive! Now THAT I'd pay money to see on the big-screen.

@StuartGreen:That fanfilm was actually made by Joey Ansah, who played a character named Desh in the Bourne Ultimatum. He's a fan of Street Fighter as well as a martial artist and fight choreographer. He deserves to take over this franchise.

if whoever gives the green light to another movie i would suggest to him that they should create a forum based on the filmmaking aspect of street fighter so us fans could tell them wat we want in this and maybe this possible next one will not be a fail

It's sad that Scott Pilgrim vs the World is more Street Fighter than any live action film they made.

Kristen Kruek is hot! I don't care what anybody else has to says on the matter of, "Is she hot or isn't she?" Cuz she is. Of course, no amount of hotness could have salvaged the steaming pile that was The Legend of Chun Li..
