FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW Review - "It's Bacon Wrapped French Fries Dipped In Chocolate"

It's August now, and the summer has one more action blockbuster to give us before we reach autumn. Thankfully, the latest installment to the Fast & Furious franchise is exactly just that...

First things first, I'd like to say I have not seen any of the previous Fast & Furious movies. Never had the interest, so never got around to it. However, it was something about Hobbs & Shaw and its three trailers (especially the last one with Jay Z blasting in the background) that hooked me. Mainly because of how absurdly wild and off the walls it appeared. Well, I can confirm Hobbs & Shaw lives up to the expectations.

This is definitely a film you can turn your brain off to. In a nutshell, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham have to take down Idris Elba from releasing a world-ending virus. That's it; simple and easy. Along with the two action heroes is Vanessa Kirby, who seriously shines in every way possible.

It's a "buddy cop" movie, just ten times more insane. That being said, our lead characters aren't actually buddies. Johnson and Statham constantly bicker and attempt to one-up each other, which creates some solid comedic moments. They're a good duo, and manage to entertain on the same level. Neither of them lag behind.

The lines are cheesier than a dairy aisle, and the action is borderline cartoonish. Still, it's entertaining without feeling too dumb. Running in at around two hours and change, it's not a short film. However, nothing ever feels dragged on or dull. It's an investable rush from start to finish. Or in other words, it's bacon wrapped French fries, dipped in chocolate. That metaphor perfectly describes the nature of Hobbs & Shaw. Although, the pacing does slow down to catch its breath whenever it's necessary, and that's a huge plus.

Also, there are two very interesting cameos in here that actually took me by surprise. When you see them, you'll know what I'm referring to.

Bottom line, take Hobbs & Shaw for what it is. A mindless, action-adventure film that requires no attention span whatsoever. If you can accomplish that, then there's plenty of fun to be had here.

Hobbs & Shaw is out in theaters now. If you've seen it, leave your thoughts down below.

@NicolausCopernicus - I don't understand how the Fast & Furious franchise gets so much praise. It lost it's charm after Fast Five. Yet films like The Expendables get trashed for doing the same exact thing. Over the top action with a mediocre plot and some big name action stars.

@tmp3

I don’t see it. She was good, some scenes she was great. But I was more impressed with the supporting cast - the mother, father, uncle, and grandmother were all really good.

Movie was good overall. Prolly give it a 7.5/10. Liked it more than my gf, didn’t know what she was expecting though because the trailer tells you what you’re getting into.

This might be the first time on this site where I may be in the minority. I was not a fan of this movie. The caat itself is solid but its waaaay to goody for me. It actually made me think I was too harsh on Midsummer. Anyone who disagrees feel free to comment and we can have a nice discussion.

Would you give actual chocolate covered, bacon-wrapped fries and 8 out of 10?

8/10 is way off the mark. I know the audience is supposed to turn off their brains for movies like this but brain or no brain, this movie was hot garbage. Save your money and watch when it hits Netflix. 4/10
