INDIANA JONES 5 Director James Mangold On Not Approaching It Like LOGAN; Harrison Ford Breaks Down Ending

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold explains why he didn't want to approach Indy's final adventure the same way as Logan, while Harrison Ford shares his take on the movie's ending.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was meant to serve as a return to form for the long-running franchise, especially after 2008's Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Instead, it's proven to be surprisingly divisive and, as things stand, a box office flop.

The movie does, however, deliver a happy ending for the iconic adventurer, and star Harrison Ford has now shared his thoughts on the way Indy's story wraps up.

"I think it's a good choice to leave him in the condition we see him at the end of the film," the legendary actor tells EW (via SFFGazette.com). "Most of his problems have been solved, dealt with. He's back to the form that we like to see him in, I think. And I think it's a wonderful last scene. I really like it."

As for whether he ever considered bidding a definitive farewell to the character by killing him off, Ford says "Because the script came out, and it didn't have Indiana Jones dying, so we didn't really need to talk about it. It came up in conversation a few times, and [Mangold] said he didn't want to be the one to kill me."

Director James Mangold elaborated on that in the same interview, revealing he was all too aware that people expected Indy to die after the way he chose to conclude Wolverine's story in Logan

"The reason death worked in Logan is because of the beautiful irony of his death, which is that he lived such a painful life, that it was only in the last 30 seconds of his life that he actually got to experience love," the filmmaker says. "And that to me was what was so moving about that ending,"

"But, for Indiana Jones, it isn't about him dying. It had to be about him coming to terms with this period of his life and this period of the world," Mangold continues. "And in a way, coming to terms with whether Indiana Jones has relevance to ours."

Debate will likely continue to rage about whether this was the right ending for Indiana Jones...and whether he should have ever been brought back, for that matter. Ford appears happy with the ending, though it will be interesting to see if he eventually weighs in on the negative response.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now playing in theaters.

Even though I think the canonicity of the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles is up in the air, I didn't expect Indy to die because we see him even older in that show.

Before anyone starts freaking out.
YES MANGOLD WILL DELIVER on Swamp Thing. He's a GREAT director.
Missteps like THIS MOVIE, are entirely the product of studio mismanagement, and an ENTIRELY ANTI-CREATIVE environment.

Someone like him will thrive under Gunn and DC. I think being tricked into this silly Disney shit nostalgia movie will even more likely gird his decisions to work FREELY WITH GUNN AND DC.

Swamp Thing will be a fresh air for the man. TOO MANY YEARS trying to meet the demands of studios that DO NOT UNDERSTAND the first thing about telling good stories.

Was it better than uncharted or the tomb raider movies? Yes. Was it better than Crystal Skull? Yes. Does it drag in the middle and could prolly cut an hour? Also yes. I call it like I see it, I'll pile on if a movie deserves it like Ant-Man, but acting like this movie is absolutely abhorrent is IDIOTIC

@bobevanz - I gotta say I really enjoyed Mads Mikklesen. He wasn't some exceptional villain, but he did feel like the lead villains of Raiders and Last Crusade, which is fitting... those nazi bastards.

@bobevanz - it’s got a lot of problems. I agree with it being better than Tomb Raider and uncharted. I need to see it again to honestly gauge if it’s better than Crystal Skull. I hate having to be positive about that movie in any way but both movies have very different issues and I’m not sure which one eeks it out for me.

The movie was beaten on July 4th by an independent film called Sound of Freedom a truth based story about a federal agent who quit his job to help save children from the sex trade.

That movie was made for $14 million and released on a much smaller number of screens….and it earned more on July 4th than Disney’s Indy 5.

That’s embarrassing for Disney/Lucasfilm.
So embarrassing that Disney reportedly called some
Execs off of vacation over the weekend to discuss the poor performance.

It’s been open for 6 days and still hasn’t earned $100 million. (Currently $89 million as of July 5).
That’s horrible for a movie with a $300 million + production budget.

Even Deadline reported this:
“ On Saturday, I learned from a key source that Indiana Jones and the Dial Destiny, before $100M in estimated P&A, cost a mindboggling $300M-plus. Much higher than the $250M-$295M that’s been leaked out there.”

The movie is a disaster.

But we don’t get repeated articles about this from Josh.
He continues to shill.

I actually thought crystal skull was better than dial of destiny. I rank dial of destiny as the 5th best Indy film. 2, 1, 3, 4, 5 is my ranking.

@Order66 - yeah. Outside of counting the opening scene as its own movie, dial of destiny is such a downgrade to everything that came before.

@Order66 - I really like 2 but my biggest issue with it is it has the absolutely insane opinion that Indian food is bad. It’s not! It’s one of my favorite types of food! And there are no chilled monkey brains!

The plot's fine, but I don't think it had the look or flare of what Steven Spielberg typically brought. The action and flare is paramount to Indiana Jones, so missing that, I think, made it less spectacular than any of the prior films.

I want to see this movie. I’ve been rewatching the older films and man o man are they friggin great. They just don’t make movies like they used to.
Sometimes I understand why there’s a writers strike and then I watch any older film and it’s clear that the writers did a much better job back in the 80’s and 90’s. It makes me think the writers of today are lazy and/or uninspired.

@slickrickdesigns - Keep watching the original films. Hell. Even watch Crystal Skull. It has more Indiana spirit then Dial.

Say what you want James. Would of. Should of. Could of. You made a stinker of a film. Steven Spielberg walked away from when Kennedy started asking for changes to the script. You should of done the same.

They made him an incompetent sack of crap that lounged around every day, whining about kids having music too loud and getting upstaged by Phoebe Waller Bridge and mocked, complaining constantly about how old he is and begging to be allowed to die in the final act only to be punched in the face and dragged back to the present where his only comfort is having someone else to talk about how much pain he's in... [frick] this movie.

People have already meme'd that this would be what the director would say, because its so out-of-touch up his own ass that it's clear he has no clue what his film actually did or said.

Movie was good, worst part was the Rey Skywalker clone, very nearly ruined the whole movie. Something about Kathleen Kennedy and arrogant britidh women that can do anything. I think it might be her type

The actual difference between DoD and Logan is that Indy is a defeated, sad old man who mopes around and gets upstaged by his younger female replacement. Logan is a grizzled, traumatised old man but is still himself; an absolute [frick]ing badass who won’t take shit from anyone, even 2 younger versions of himself, but still cares for others.

The Logan line is complete bullshit and makes me wonder if Mangold bothered to watch any of the X-Men movies before making Logan (including his own "The Wolverine"), acting like Logan didn't experience plenty of love during his life and not just during the last 30 seconds of it.

James Mangold, director of Indy 5 is expressing his frustration with Wolverine being in Deadpool 3, claiming that it's inevitable that they would want to
"wring that character dry" for all its worth instead of letting him have a noble send off.

The wife and I really enjoyed it. Indy is over 80 years old - of course, he's going to be upstaged by younger ones and he's going to be a cranky old man! He was a cranky young man! The movie is bombing because people don't trust Disney or Lucasfilm any longer, period.
