With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic slowing down everything in Hollywood, the long-planned fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise was recently postponed by an entire year. Because of that, the movie won't be released until July 2022, but longtime producer Frank Marshall has today shared some key updates on where things stand with the project.

He started by confirming that Logan director James Mangold will indeed helm the film, while Steven Spielberg will remain closely attached as one of Indiana Jones 5's producers.

"His love of the franchise," Marshall said of what makes Mangold the right fit. "He’s a wonderful filmmaker. I think he also has a relationship with Harrison. It was all of the right pieces coming together, at the right time."

Pre-production, meanwhile, continues, and Marshall would explain to Collider how the virus has affected the script. "The number one thing, obviously, is the safety of everybody -- the cast, the crew, and all of us. So, we’re looking at the guidelines that are coming, slowly, from the health experts and the studios and the different parts of the business, and we’re just trying to incorporate everything, so we can move forward and be safe," he explains.

"It’s going to obviously slow things down, so we’re trying to adjust. You won’t see a lot of big crowd scenes, for example, for a while. There won’t be any more craft service. It’s a moving target right now. There are a lot of people working on the solutions to be able to work and be safe."

Marshall concluded by revealing that work on the latest iteration of the script had only just begun before the shutdowns hit, and confirmed that a new production date has not been decided yet.

I hope we see shortround again. Was watching Temple of Doom and wondered what happened to him. Would be good for him to make an appearance.

Can't wait for him to adapt the name Dr. Henry Walton Skywalker in the end of the film.

@WakandanQueen - Yeah can't wait for the end of the film

I will never get why Kingdom of the Crystal Skull got positive reviews. Then again, looking at Attack of the Clones and The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm seems to get a pass with many critics.

@WakandanQueen - Crystal Skull is at least a good movie - as in the technical side of film-making is all there. There is value in craft and critics appreciate that even if the story is not the greatest.

@TheJustinHammer - Transformers is an incoherent trash can. Any Spielberg movie will be well shot, well scored, well edited and you will be able to coherently tell who is where and what is happening and what is the story. Not so with Michael Bay movies.

Harrison was brilliant as Indiana for 3 great movies but he and the franchise stayed at the party too long with Crystal Skull and that was 12 years ago. So you're now going to get him again 14 years after he hit the age wall. Just stop.

@CplHicks - simple, do a prequel.

Start the movie with Indy telling stories from his youth. Cut to the past with a young Indy played by Ansel Elgort. There’s your new Indy with a revived franchise.

Indy could return home to live her final adventure. The Jones Residence, Utah and American Indian mysticism.

There's no denying Harrison Ford is a very active and fit guy for his age, but the fact remains he will be an 80yr old (or thereabouts) Indiana Jones when this is made. That might be a hard sell.
