MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8's Budget Continues To Spiral Out Of Control After A Submarine Stunt Goes Wrong

We've already heard rumblings about Mission: Impossible 8's budget ballooning to as much as $400 million, and the production just suffered another setback thanks to a submarine mishap. Check it out...

Plans once called for Mission: Impossible 8 to be shot back-to-back with Dead Reckoning - Part 1; however, the eighth instalment was also originally titled Dead Reckoning - Part 2, only for that to change when the first half underperformed at the box office.

The sequel has since suffered a series of setbacks. Shooting began in March 2022 and was halted last July as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Work resumed this March and, right now, the idea is for Mission: Impossible 8 to be released next May.

However, according to a new report from The Mirror (via ActioNewz.com), the movie has been hit by further delays courtesy of...a malfunction with a submarine set that's cost the production a whopping $23 million.

According to the site, "Sources say the gimbal, which is used to lower the 120ft-high structure, jammed under its weight and had to be repaired. This has put filming back weeks and bumped up costs. A source said: 'They’re not happy as it puts production behind, which costs a lot of money per day.'"

"Production hit problems once they started adding fittings and stairwells to the empty sub shell and realised the contraption holding it could not tolerate the weight," the report adds. "Insiders say the repairs are ongoing."

There have already been reports about the budgets for both Dead Reckoning and the untitled eighth movie running out of control, so we're sure Paramount Pictures won't be happy about this. In fact, Tom Cruise is thought to have clashed with the studio so often that he's moving on from them after spending the past 31 years of his career there (he's since signed a deal with Warner Bros.).

Various gossip sites are also running reports that Cruise is getting majorly stressed while attempting to get this next movie across the finish line.

In Mission: Impossible 8, Cruise will reprise his role as Ethan Hunt alongside returning stars Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, and Pom Klementieff.

New additions to the franchise include Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, Lucy Tulugarjuk, Katy O'Brian, and Tramell Tillman.

Waddingham recently spoke out in defence of Cruise when she said, "I have to say, I have a real problem with anybody that goes at [Tom Cruise] now. Having met him and having spent five days intensely. He is without doubt one of the loveliest and encouraging, positive and inspiring human beings I have ever met. Isn’t he gorgeous? I have no time for anyone saying anything about him."

Christopher McQuarrie directs Mission: Impossible 8 ahead of its planned May 23, 2025 release.

Did he have a recorded outburst towards the sub?

@IAmAHoot - yes

It was very Fawlty Towers esque where he started to beat it with a tree branch somehow

Isn’t the Mirror a tabloid?

If so then I’m not sure how valid this could be but we’ll see…

I guess this means going practical to a point is a good thing , not everything can be or maybe should be done for real Tom.

Spoilers. So the MI find the sub!

@S8R8M - my first thought! But that was to be expected since it was clearly made to be the macguffin in thr last movie

@S8R8M @Vigor - I kinda thought the sub already played it's part in the story. Kinda forgot it's importance though, but I guess there must be some

S8R8M - 5/27/2024, 5:07 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeah it's lurking at the bottom of the ocean being the ultimate big bad. It's interesting because Ethan can't run at this one 🤣
Kadara

@bkmeijer1 - I remember them saying something about the sub housing the original programming of the rogue AI. So it will allow them to reset it.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/28/2024, 2:28 AM
@S8R8M @Kadara - didn't expect the program in the sub to be the big bad. No way it hasn't backed itself up.

@bkmeijer1 - McQuarrie wanted Ethan to go up against something new. Personally, I felt like it was a dig at AI before the strike.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/28/2024, 6:34 AM
@S8R8M - I don't think it's a dig really. Kinda made sense with the rise of AI. And who better to go up against Ethan than something that can predict his every move
S8R8M
S8R8M - 5/28/2024, 11:39 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Oh so you did get it hahaha
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/28/2024, 4:42 PM
@S8R8M - I get the point of the AI, I just don't get the point of the AI not duplicating itself. I guess the movie needs a magic red button to defeat the antagonist, and the sub is exactly that
S8R8M
S8R8M - 5/28/2024, 6:16 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I get you now. Kinda like the way Ultron should have been?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/29/2024, 2:58 AM
@S8R8M - I honestly didn't like his ending either. Think a virus works better than some magical red button that shuts all copies down. Or maybe even some philosophical debate

I thought the seventh movie was good but not as good as the previous three or four movies.

@marvel72 - On the contrary, dead reckoning is my favourite MI film. I deem it superior to fallout, the original and ghost protocol. I love it so much I saw it four times in theatres including in IMAX. It’s one of my favourite action films. I’m not going to defend it.
I understand not everyone loves it as much as I do but man it’s almost like it was tailor-made for me. Just when I thought I had seen it all with fallout, dead reckoning took it to another level for me. I’m counting down the days until part 2! If anything the franchise is at an all time high, cruise just keeps pushing boundaries, subverting expectations no matter what. This is how a franchise evolves into something revolutionary and majestic unlike the fast and furious franchise which has reached levels of absolute absurdity, it defies comprehension.

@TheMetaMan - I get the feeling you love it a bit more than me. But it is one of my favourite action movies and I was pretty blown away by it. My favourite in the franchise which already has some high bars.

I was quite disappointed they dropped the ‘part 2’ name, but I guess fair enough that there was still years of production to be done. Fingers crossed the next one keeps the standard real high, and that Tom doesn’t have a brain aneurysm with the stress.

@marvel72 - I thought it was great. At this point individual ranking is kind of irrelevant for me. Like, they're all good and personal preference just shifts them around.

I'm disappointed it didn't do better at the BO. It still did well, but not as good as I'd hoped for.

@Cass - lol I’m so excited to see how part 2 plays out. Apparently it’s going to be the final instalment of the franchise therefore I’m expecting some “endgame” levels of epicness.

@TheMetaMan - walk us through it brother! Tell us what you loves about it! This is a place where we should be celebrating cool shit!!! Lay it on us!

@Itwasme - Ok then you asked for it!!
The story based on the entity is enthralling to witness because for the first time Ethan is facing an enemy with virtually no limits, no emotions, no fear. It’s certainly the most ambitious movie in the series and the team dynamic is at its pinnacle. Hayley Atwell is a wonderful addition to the cast, Gabriel is a superb villain, love how the backstory which predates the original movie factors into the narrative.

Narratively the film aligns with the original movie bringing everything full circle. Notice how Kitchridge is a character not seen since the first film! Each act presents it’s own crisis and stakes, building to the inevitable climax and wow what a sensational climax. Talk about saving the best surprises till last.
Cruise driving off a cliff with the motorcycle into a free fall is simply breathtaking.

Cruise and Mcquarrie make an excellent duo because they have delivered an action spectacle that is authentic in every way imaginable. The stunts, set pieces, score, choreography, VFX, screenplay. Dead reckoning is meticulously crafted. The action is never excessive, the story is not too dense, each character has nuance, thematically the entity is so relevant in today’s times concerning the existence of AI. I love the story so much. It’s so contemporary. Can’t wait for part 2. This was my top film of 2023!

@Itwasme -

I just find Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation and Fallout better movies.

Dead Reckoning was good and if you watch Part 1 and 2 back to back, it might come across better.

I have only seen Dead Reckoning once, maybe I should watch it again.
